My article about bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) was published recently in Másfélfok.hu (in Hungarian). Highlighting the main massages: 1.      It is very likely that we need industrial removals in order to limit global warming. The only exception if we could drastically decrease our energy consumption, but unfortunately there is little governmental willingness to do so. 2.      The most promising technology seems to be BECCS. Integrated assessment models prefer this technology in the different mitigation scenarios, as this is the only technology which can produce energy and capture carbon at the same time. 3.      The huge future appetite is also valid for Hungary. Both the LTS and the 2050 outlook of the NECP significantly relies on the technology. The expected capacity in 2050 would be ~ 1,8 GW, which would make the technology the third pillar of the future electricity mix besides nuclear and wind&solar. 4.      However, there are number of factors which question the real emission factor of the technology: a.      Most importantly, the feedstock. If primary woody biomass is used for BECCS, it will just transform carbon from one pool to another b.      And even less, if the  supply chain emission and the capture efficiency (~ 90%) are considered. c.      The energy penalty, i.e. the energy needed for capturing the carbon further weakens the emission factor per produced energy. In theory, by utilising the waste heat in district heating, this penalty can be decreased, but assuming the technology will economically be more viable in large scale, this opportunity has its limitations. 5.      The technology is not proven at scale. Currently it is utilized mostly by bioethanol plants where the technology is simpler. 6.      Given the very limited availability of low-risk (in terms of effect on nature including land-use change) and low-carbon (in terms of carbon-debt) feedstock, the technology should not used in the power sector, but instead in hard-to-abate sectors (such as aviation or high-temperature industry). 7.      Neither BECCS, nor any other “offsetting” solution can replace emission reduction! This should be and remain the main priority!

Is range anxiety still a thing when traveling on long trips with an electric vehicle in Romania? I will share insights about my experience, so keep reading. We have 2 passenger vehicles in our household, one Electric and the other that runs on Petrol. Contrary to what most people think, when we are traveling on long trips, both in Romania and abroad, we exclusively use the electric vehicle. Here are the reasons why: ✅ modern EVs are packed with state of the art technology and safety systems that makes trips more enjoyable ✅ electric motors provide continuous high torque and smooth acceleration in all speed ranges and are making long journeys more relaxing ✅ most of today's EVs have enough range to travel +300 km distances on a single charge. We need to use the restrooms more often than our EV needs to be charged ✅ there are enough chargers already in Romania to cover our travelling needs and more to come. The local EV charging infrastructure is developing continuously in an insane pace, new EV charging HUB openings are announced on a monthly basis ✅ with proper trip planning ahead (which becomes a healthy habit shortly when you start living with an EV) there is no destination we cannot reach in Romania or Europe ✅ many accommodation places have installed EV chargers within their parking lots and we usually have an overnight charge at the hotels we are staying at ✅ because we use 100% certified green electricity for home charging from Hidroelectrica and because in the electricity generation mix in Romania over 60% comes from renewables and low carbon footprint sources like hidro, solar, wind and nuclear, a large part of the electricity used for our Romanian trips has been produced with zero emissions. It gives us peace of mind knowing that we actively contributing to lower the greenhouse gas emissions ✅ and undeniably the greatest advantage and incentive to travel with EVs is the low cost of fuelling. In most trips the average cost of the electricity represent a third of the cost of gasoline that would have been used by traveling with a petrol powered car All the above described advantages are inclining the scale toward using more and more the EV instead of the petrol car both for city driving and long journeys. In fact, as I am writing, I just realised that the petrol car became the second vehicle in our family 😊. Our experience shows that range anxiety is a thing of the past. Those living with an EV know what I am talking about. Most people I hear mentioning range anxiety these days are the ones who do not own an EV just yet but considering buying one. Still, I often hear about charging anxiety, which comes from the uncertainty of the chargers availability and charging service quality, but as an eMobility industry insider I see that the whole industry is working hard to make it better and more reliable each day. 📅 On May, 14 I participated in an important event at the Romanian Government headquarters. Interconnector outage increased wholesale electricity price by ~75% in #Estonia in July according to analysis by Enefit. They say the price increase to be 42 €/MWh. At consumption of 517 GWh, this means 21.7 M€ extra cost nationwide or 16 € extra per every person in our country. Actual Nord Pool monthly average was 97.97 €/MW. The 650 MW Estlink 2 power cable that connects us to Finland has been broken since 26th of January. Cable repair (seen in the picture of the linked article) should be finished on September 13 according to latest press release. A good reminder of how important international electricity trade is in Europe. Since Baltic states are a coupled price zone, Latvia and Lithuania too have lost access to a significant inflow of cheap electricity from Finland, Sweden and Norway.

Brazil, Poland, flood and infrastructure for extreme weather conditions 💔 while we see the strength of the population engaged on helping those in need something makes me reflective.. The recent floods in Poland and Brazil remind us of the critical role that infrastructure and preparation play in safeguarding communities against the growing impacts of climate change. Poland’s proactive investment in water reservoirs and #floodcontrolsystems helped mitigate the damage ( yes, I know many places are devastated in Poland but we also see the regions where this type of system have been built protecting the surrounding communities), while Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul faced devastating consequences due to a lack of similar measures, despite clear warnings. As we face more frequent and severe weather events, it’s essential for governments to prioritize building resilient infrastructure and acting on early warnings. 🤔 Protecting lives and livelihoods must be at the heart of our response to a changing climate.

Sharing is caring🌻 And big motivation I received very interesting ask with invitation for the closing event of the professional #mentoring program organized by PVPA Personalo valdymo profesionalų asociacija - to share my experience as a manager partnership with HR and my experience being in an HR role. Many thoughts came while reflecting 💡 For instance - I know at least a few examples when a functional manager moved into the role of HR manager (including me), but from HR to line manager is not typical. - HR does not make the decision, the manager does, but HR takes care for all exceptions that manager cannot make a decision on. - It is not easy to be neutral and objective both from the perspective of the organization and the employee, but HR must be so. Hungary's gas storage facilities are 86% full. Hungary is gradually filling its gas storage facilities, and the rate of injection has not changed yet. Hungary's gas storage facilities are currently 86% full. The rate of loading of underground gas storage facilities is still the same, RIA Novosti writes, citing gas storage monitoring websites. By the way, as of August 14, European storage facilities were 88.5% full of gas, Gas Infrastructure Europe reported. Hungary has four underground gas storage facilities, their total capacity is 3.7 billion cubic meters. One facility is now even almost 98% full, the agency notes. Last year, Hungary's underground gas storage facilities reached their maximum capacity at the very beginning of the heating season, which starts in the country in October-early November. Recall that Hungary receives part of its gas through a pipeline running through Ukraine. The Sudzha pumping station along this route is located in the Kursk region, where clashes between Russian and Ukrainian troops are currently ongoing.
