🐛 Microsoft Power BI data exposure - a bug or a creative feature? 👩‍💻 Cyber Security experts from the Nokod Research team highlighted in a blog post the extreme vulnerability Power BI has when it comes to PII and PHI. 📊 Power BI data visualisations are built on data in a semantic model, this raw data can become exposed and risk harvesting from attackers. This was owing to some reports being inadvertently configured to become publicly accessible online. Therefore, anyone with the report’s URL could access the data. 🤔 How? While reports can be shared with external partners, they create a URL that search engines can index. This can be attacked, making a data leak turn into a significant data breach. 📣 MS responded stating this was a feature as opposed to a bug. However, what this really highlights is the need for user education, upskilling, awareness, and regular auditing to mitigate data leaks and breaches - whether that is Power BI or other data tools.
