SIC Power Devices Market Share from 2023. In 2023, the SiC (silicon carbide) power devices industry experienced strong growth, mainly driven by battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The top five suppliers dominated the market, holding 91.9% of the total revenue. STMicroelectronics led with a 32.6% market share, and onsemi moved up to second place. Looking ahead to 2024, TrendForce forecasts a significant increase in demand from AI servers and other sectors. However, the slowdown in BEV sales and weakening industrial demand are expected to decelerate the industry's revenue growth. Key developments among leading companies include: STMicroelectronics: Building a SiC factory in Italy and a joint venture factory in China to achieve vertical integration by 2026. onsemi: Rapid growth due to its automotive EliteSiC series, with plans to transition to 8-inch wafer production by 2025. Infineon : Facing challenges with industrial market customers but strong automotive business growth, promoting a diversified supplier system for SiC materials. Wolfspeed: Despite operational missteps, it remains the largest supplier of automotive-grade SiC materials, with new production capacity expected from its JP plant. ROHM: Acquired a new plant in Japan, aiming to start 8-inch SiC substrate production, enhancing partnerships with automotive firms. TrendForce highlights that the SiC industry is in a phase of rapid growth and competition, with economies of scale becoming crucial. imec #ITF2024 - USING PHOTOACOUSTICS TO LOOK DEEPER INSIDE THE BODY: Let's continue our coverage of interesting optical technologies we saw at the recent imec ITF2024 two-day conference in the heart of #Antwerp. On day two, I wandered around the exhibition looking for demos – you know that I love demos. I renewed contact with Hilde Jans, who is R&D Project Manager at imec. Watch the video! She brings us up to date on what Optica Corporate member imec is doing in the field of photoacoustics for (mainly) biomedical applications. This is a non-invasive sensing technique for biomedical applications, such as tumour imaging or glucose sensing. It is based on the photoacoustic principle discovered by Alexander Graham Bell (yes, him), where incoming light is absorbed by a sample and generates sound waves. Looking deeper inside the body Because it focuses with sound, photoacoustics is able to image deeper in tissue than light-based alternatives. When imaging biological tissue, the choice of modality depends on the contrast used for imaging and the trade-off between resolution and depth. Light waves, e.g. used in endoscopy or microscopy, can generate high-resolution images but don’t travel far unperturbed. Deeper in tissue, the light gets scattered, resulting in blurry images. High-energy X-rays form a special case as they penetrate deep into the tissue and yield high-resolution images, but this ionizing radiation limits their use. To circumvent these drawbacks, other options that don’t rely on unperturbed light propagation have also been explored. Acoustic or sound waves are well known to safely monitor foetuses in the womb using ultrasound imaging. These mechanical waves are less scattered than electromagnetic waves of comparable frequencies or wavelengths, so they can reach objects deeper in the tissue. However, ultrasound images typically suffer from a low resolution. MRI images have greater detail than ultrasound images, but they are typically not real-time and static. In the soft spot between these established imaging methods emerges a novel technique with the resolution of light-based imaging and the good depth penetration of sound-based imaging, called photoacoustics (PA). Q2-2024 European Components Distribution (DMASS) Reports Lower Revenue in Second Quarter 2024. The contraction of the European components market continued in the second quarter of 2024, and the distribution industry was particularly affected. According to DMASS Europe e.V., the European components distribution market recorded a decline of 26.9% in the second quarter of 2024 across all components, with consolidated sales ending at 4.09 billion Euro. While IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and Electromechanical) components seem to normalize faster with a minus of only 12.9% to 1.48 billion Euro, #Semiconductors continue to bear the consequences of the massive growth in the last 3 years. Semi sales declined by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro (minor rounding error included). Semiconductor distribution sales in Europe shrank by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro, the lowest sales value since Q4/2021, but way above pre-#CoVID times. Quite notable were also regional differences, as shown in the table, with #Germany as the biggest market contracting significantly more than most bigger countries. #UK , #France, #Iberia and #EasternEurope “did better” than average. Hermann Reiter, chairman of DMASS: “When it came to sales, the second quarter hopefully did not surprise anyone. The low bookings of 2023 are now turning into equally low revenues. Due to still high inventory levels, especially in the semiconductor field, and due to macro-economic uncertainties, a return to growth in 2024 for distribution is unlikely or could happen earliest at the end of the year. However, as we can see, parts of the market – IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and #Electromechanical) – have started to normalize already, so our confidence that 2025 will see a return to growth is very high. What makes us a bit nervous is the low visibility within the #supplychain and the lack of longer-term procurement strategies.   Do you know… 85% of the electronics in an EV-charging station can be delivered by TOP-electronics So, you think I’m re-posting the same content.... nope !  This week we had our first “TOP’s vertical markets” meeting, with two experts from the market... thanks to Koos and Steve, we really did a deep-dive into the market of EV chargers, and the working of the machine. How does a product work from A to Z, how is certification works, what are the most challenging areas to design a system, and of course... How could we at TOP-electronics help the engineer to design a creative, cost effective and solid charger that could ramp up in volume. When you look at the system, Summit Electronics is able to deliver the AC or DC plug and receiver connector between the charger and the car. The Human interfacing (HMI) could be done by a 7” TFT with capacitive touchscreen, which is from Yeebo International Holdings Ltd, and is controlled by a base board that is controlled by a SOM from ASUS IoT. And payment is done with the RF-ID from ELATEC GmbH. The more powerful DC chargers are normally air-forced cooled by a fan, from SANYO DENKI EUROPE SA.. To have the communication independent from a local networks, a Quectel module (and antenna) for the best communication to the back office, and payments And more and more products are been used from TOP’s line-card. TOP-electronics loves to support any customer, but especially when it's a environmental application. #EVcharging #EV
