Dynamic dApps in Private 5G O-RAN: Microsoft Janus Project and LLMs ◼ Challenges of Existing O-RAN RIC: O-RAN ALLIANCE RIC provides programmability for RAN management and monitoring, but current standards are constrained due to latency requirements (>10ms). Telemetry and control functions are limited to predefined service models. Meanwhile, real-time control challenges arise in private 5G RAN, often as tight as a few milliseconds in many private 5G use cases, such as smart factories and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). ◼ MS Project Janus Concept: Janus is a fully programmable monitoring and control system for 5G RAN that allows third parties to load "codelets" (small programs) into RAN functions safely and dynamically. Built on eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter), Janus permits inline execution of codelets within RAN functions in a verifiably safe manner and injects hooks into different layers of RAN for telemetry collection and control. In this way, Janus offers a level of programmability and customization not typically available in traditional RAN architectures. ◼ eBPF Codelets as Real-Time dApps in Private 5G O-RAN In private 5G O-RAN, eBPF codelets act as real-time decentralized applications (dApps) that can optimize network functions dynamically. This approach makes sense for private 5G networks because of: - Customization: Enterprises often have unique traffic patterns and security requirements that off-the-shelf solutions cannot address. Codelets can be tailored to specific applications, prioritizing different network slices for industrial IoT, remote control, and augmented reality. - Low-Latency Operations: eBPF codelets run inline within the RAN, avoiding latency issues associated with traversing between user and kernel spaces. This ensures that real-time decisions can be made in microseconds, crucial for time-sensitive applications like autonomated guided vehicles (AGVs). ◼ Auto dApp Generation with LLM Generating these codelets manually requires specialized expertise. To simplify this process, Project Janus can leverage a Large Language Model (LLM) for automatic dApp generation. For example, a pre-trained LLM (like GPT-4) is fine-tuned with eBPF codelet datasets to understand networking requirements and translate user requests into eBPF bytecode automatically. ◼ Challenges - Complexity: Developing eBPF programs requires knowledge of kernel internals, specific libraries, and the constraints of the eBPF virtual machine. - Verification Limitations: The verifier imposes strict limitations on loops and certain operations. - Compatibility Issues: eBPF programs are sensitive to kernel versions. - Runtime Control: Challenges in predicting worst-case execution times. - Standardization in O-RAN Alliance Microsoft Capgemini Intel Corporation Juniper Networks Mavenir did a great Janus project joint demo at the RIC Forum. #ORAN #OpenRAN #ORANRIC #ProjectJanus #E2SM #DynamicServiceModel #PrivateORAN #Private5G #eBPF #Codelet #dApps

How many aggregators does it take to change a light bulb? One more if it is anything like the #OpenGateway API ecosystem. Ericsson and 12 major telcos are creating a JV to aggregate #networkAPIs before passing them on to other API aggregators who might then pass them on to a developer who could do something useful with them, hopefully. Computer science is all about abstraction and it seems with network APIs the more abstraction, the better. Don't get me wrong. This could help accelerate the Open Gateway initiative and avoid the friction suffered by previous attempts such as Mobile Connect. And what is good for network APIs is good for Vonage (which Ericsson owns), as well as all the other API aggregators (Infobip, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure , Google, etc.). Why the lamb? Ericsson is sacrificing any profits it had hoped to generate from its Global Network Platform because it is contributing this to the JV in return for a 50% stake, BUT the JV is not intended to make a profit. Only cover its costs. Which begs the question, who will want to run a non-profit tech start-up? It doesn't mean they won't offer an attractive salary but there will be no IPO and no stock options. Proximus is looking to acquire spectrum from NRB who has decided to embrace the MVNO model instead The NRB Group, one of the biggest ICT firms in Belgium, acquired a 20 MHz slot on the 3600 MHz frequency band to provide #5G services in 2022. Now the Belgian company has decided against rolling out its own mobile network, but intends to continue offering 5G services to customers as an mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) Belgium’s former incumbent, Proximus, it now looking to acquire NRB's 5G licence and the two companies are discussing a possible #wholesaleagreement. The agreement between Proximus and NRB was submitted to BIPT, the federal telecoms regulator, who has approved the transaction, subject to the effective transfer of rights taking place after the publication of a new call for applications for the 3410-3430 MHz band. The current state of play in 5G bands authorisation indicates some progress in this respect compared to the last reporting period, most notably in the 700 MHz and 3.6 GHz bands, which have now been widely assigned across Member States (MSs), while the 26 GHz band has been authorised only in 12 MSs. As such, the authorization of the 5G pioneer bands, which was supposed to have been completed in all EU Member States by end 20201 has not been completely fulfilled yet. The most recent assignments have taken place in Austria, Bulgaria, and Latvia, with notable auctions in the 3.6 GHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 26 GHz bands. There is also a continued strong interest in local spectrum assignment mechanisms across EU MSs, with recent developments in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Slovenia. In terms of EU policy developments, the European Commission published a White Paper on digital infrastructure setting out future policy scenarios to accelerate the deployment and transition of digital infrastructures in Europe, highlighting the need for innovation, efficient investment, and secure networks. Initial reactions to the Commission's digital infrastructure White Paper have been generally positive. The feedback period for the White Paper remains open until 30 June 2024. Publicly funded 5G initiatives continue to be of interest, with Nokia having announced a significant investment in microelectronics and communications technology in Germany (€360 million) and the European Commission having selected additional projects in the context of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) programme. As far as main commercial developments are concerned, we have observed that the main focus remains on the rollout and expansion of basic 5G networks across the EU, with various operators announcing new 5G coverage milestones. There has also been a continued effort by EU mobile operators to launch more 5G standalone (5G SA) services across the EU, although the deployment of SA services remains limited, and there is little transparency about the extent of operator rollouts. Major international developments confirm the continued global investment in 5G networks. The ITU reports that 40% of the global population is now covered by 5G (including both SA and NSA 5G coverage). The GSMA predicts that, by 2030, 5G will make up over half of all mobile connections and become the dominant mobile technology. Total industry value enabled by IPv6 and IPv6+ is estimated at $10.8 trillion in 2030.” These words, taken from an analysis by Roland Berger, point to a clear advantage for Africa in rapidly creating value in certain new technologies such as 5G, IoT and the fast-developing Cloud,... This advantage would be to gradually migrate to IPv6/IPv6+, which could serve as the foundation for these new technologies.

Vodafone and Orange share the same RAN infrastructure for rural environments, utilizing all possible FR1 bands, including 3.5GHz (with massive MIMO). Notably, they have leveraged mMIMO to allow the full bandwidths of both operators to be transmitted without restrictions. To my knowledge, this is the first instance of deploying mid-band spectrum (which has relatively less coverage compared to low-band) with approximately 100MHz bandwidth using mMIMO radios, for rural deployment. It remains uncertain whether this approach has fully achieved the goal of reducing deployment costs in rural areas. #5g #ransharing #oran #mmimo #midband #ruraldeployment

The #lack of #progress in #standalone #5G #deployments highlighted in the GSA May 2024 Market Snapshot Report is a point worth noting. Stalled #Standalone 5G -The report indicates that the number of operators with deployed standalone 5G networks hasn't increased since the end of 2023 (at 49). This suggests a #slowdown in the #rollout of the next-generation 5G technology. Expectations vs. Reality- Standalone 5G promises significant #improvements in network #performance, #efficiency, and #flexibility. The lack of progress could be due to various factors like technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, investment considerations, infrastructure limitations, or delays in developing applications that fully utilize standalone 5G capabilities. Additionally, the transition to standalone 5G networks requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and investments, which can be both costly and time-consuming for operators. Some operators might be in the process of deploying standalone 5G networks that haven't been publicly announced yet. In addition to three service verticals (eMBB, uRLLC, mMTC) in the early 5G Network, two more service verticals (or Network Slices in the right context) are added in later releases- 𝑽2𝑿- "Vehicle-to-everything (V2X)" was introduced in R16 and it denotes the seamless exchange of data among various transportation elements and traffic-related sensors, characterized by high bandwidth, low latency, and utmost reliability. The forthcoming 5G mobile networks will play a pivotal role in furnishing connectivity for both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. 𝑯𝑴𝑻𝑪 - HMTC, or High-Performance Machine Type Communication, was introduced in R17 and it represents a category of 5G networks enabling efficient communication between machines and the network. Within the framework of 5G, networks are engineered to accommodate diverse needs, such as machine-type communications, throughput, latency, availability, and high-performance communications.
