'But when we spoke earlier of the neutrality of sense and we presented this neutrality as a double, it was not from the point of view of the genesis of sense, to the extent that sense has at its disposal a genetic power inherited from the quasi-cause; it was from an entirely different point of view; whereby sense was considered first as the effect produced by corporal causes: an impassable and sterile surface effect. How can we maintain both that sense produces even the state of affairs in which it is embodied, and that it is itself produced by these states of affairs or the actions and passions of bodies (an immaculate conception)?' 'The idea itself of a static genesis dissipates the contradiction. When we say that bodies and their mixtures produce sense, it is not by virtue of an individuation which would presuppose it. Individuation in mixtures, the play of persons and concepts in their variations - this entire order presupposes sense and the pre-individual and impersonal neutral field within which it unfolds. It is therefore in a different way that sense is produced by bodies. The question is now about bodies taken in their undifferentiated depth and in their measureless pulsation. This depth acts in an original way, by means of its power to organize surfaces and to envelop itself within surfaces. This pulsation sometimes acts through the formation of a minimum formation of a minimum amount of surface for a maximum amount of matter, (thus the spherical form), and sometimes through the growth of surfaces and their multiplication in accordance with diverse processes (stretching, fragmenting, crushing, drying and moistening, absorbing, foaming, emulsifying, etc.)' - Gilles Deleuze, 'The Logic of Sense', 1969. Notes: With ontological static genesis (see previous post) Deleuze has to deal with a seeming contradiction: 'How can we maintain both that sense produces even the state of affairs in which it is embodied, and that it is itself produced by these states of affairs or the actions and passions of bodies (an immaculate conception)?' He suggests that it is 'in a different way that sense is produced by bodies'. Sense is no longer a surface effect of the interaction of individuated bodies (such as a knife and the flesh of a body, or a piece of iron and fire, and so on). Rather, bodies are taken now 'in their undifferentiated depth and in their measureless pulsation'. We are dealing now with an impersonal and pre-individual 'transcendental field' to use Jean-Paul Sartre's term. ['transcendental field': the condition of experience which must involve an impersonal or impersonal consciousness since if the ego were presumed in it, if this consciousness was conceived of as my life, then this consciousness would be closed in upon itself]. 🇳🇱 Netherlands vs. USA 🇺🇸: Two completely different worlds in terms of music. While the US is the birthplace of genres like jazz, hip-hop, and rock, the Netherlands has mainly made its mark internationally with Dance. Think of big names like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, and Martin Garrix. But beyond electronic music? The Netherlands often borrows styles from other countries, like the pop structures from Sweden or the urban influences from the UK. Why is that? In America, music is often intertwined with culture: hip-hop, for example, is more than just music—it’s a lifestyle, a movement. In the Netherlands, music often remains just ‘entertainment’. We look at what’s successful in other countries and adapt it. This doesn’t mean that the Netherlands lacks talent, but it’s challenging to develop a unique, recognizable identity outside of Dance. “Leuen ende laeten leuven”, to live and let others live. Working in the arts for most of my adult life, I have come to intimately know the meaning of this phrase. The arts (theatre, dance, music, film, fine arts…) attract perhaps the most diverse group of beings inhabiting this earth. To navigate in this world is requires one to be a free thinker, open to possibilities, and willing to think outside the box (or even, dare I say, not acknowledge the existence of the box at all). In all of my time working in the art world I’ve never been forced to compromise my own set of beliefs or personal values. Have I been pressed to evaluate or question there validity? Of course, but that is the very nature of being a thinking evolving human being. Have I disagreed with other artists belief systems, lifestyle choices, or philosphies? Of course. Many times. Do I ask them to change… no. It’s not my right. Only when someone’s choices causes harm to others should there be intervention. We all should know what is meant by that statement. Freedom of speech gives us the right to voice our opinion and make our views known to others. Freedom of speech does not give one the authority to mandate that others adapt in any way. Live your life. Enjoy your living. Let others do the same. Do not cause others harm. If someone infringes on your right to live your life, and causes you harm, take the appropriate and legal action. Disliking someone’s life choices is not harm, however, and the freedom to live and let live is the bedrock principle we should all live by.

Avama teamed up with Liquid Gas Europe who are a non-profit organisation based in Belgium and are the leading voice within the Liquid Gas Industry. With a goal of helping us as a society to be capable of transferring to 100% renewable by 2050. We took on the task of a complicated shoot which comprised of 4 countries over a 4 week period with 8 of the leading brands within the Liquid Gas Industry.
