🌍 Who Controls Our #Land? Increasingly, it’s not #farmers, but financiers.🤑 One highlight of this year was our landmark #LandSqueeze report, exposing the unprecedented pressures on farmland and what can be done to achieve equitable access to land. In this video, our expert Nettie Wiebe unpacks the global land squeeze and its devastating effects on farmers, communities, and food systems. Nettie highlights how speculative capital is pushing up land prices, preventing young farmers from entering agriculture, destroying biodiversity and local ecosystems, and hollowing out communities. Including in her own community in Saskatchwen Canada. As she says, “Land is the source of our food and our life. We need new regulations to ensure farmers—not financiers—control the land.” 📖 Explore the full Land Squeeze report here: https://lnkd.in/dDPRqN8c #LandRights #SustainableFarming #FoodSystems #LandJustice

💯! We've heard these arguments before. Industrial agriculture, & the ultra processed foods it churns out, is responsible for mass disease, 1/3 of global warming emissions, & vast destruction of nature. All while starving 2.8 billion people of access to a healthy diet. The idea that we need to suck it up and entrust BigAg to do more of the same (but better) is a recipe for disaster. Evidence is clear, #agroecology can produce resilient, healthy, abundant food while protecting biodiversity, farmer livelihoods & soil. And overcoming hunger is a question of providing access to food, not further industrialising the countryside.
Oof, nothing like starting off your weekend flaming mad about a The New York Times guest essay: https://lnkd.in/gK67-mrj. I fired off a Letter to the Editor, but seeing as the Grey Lady already published one from me earlier this year, I doubt they will publish another. The TL;DR? The article trots out debunked storylines that we have to suck it up and live with food systems that destroy biodiversity, contribute to the climate crisis, and make us sick. I don't buy it. All around the world, communities are tapping agroecological and organic practices, showing food systems can boost biodiversity, foster climate resilience, and, yes, produce healthy food. The future of food I'm fighting for? More food systems aligned with our deepest desires for health, community, and a climate we can live with and one that supports the food producers, workers, and fishers at their heart.

Europe’s food future is at a turning point. As #agri Commissioner Christophe Hansen prepares to unveil his vision for agriculture and food, the stakes couldn’t be higher. https://lnkd.in/e5iyA-MX With farmers’ protests demanding action and the Strategic Dialogue on EU agriculture forging a rare consensus, the mandate for transformative reform is undeniable. Public support is strong. “This is a golden opportunity to act… Hansen has a chance to deliver not just a ‘vision,’ but a legacy,” writes Olivier De Schutter in his op-ed for EUobserver. The path forward demands clear priorities and bold action: ✅ Fair prices for #farmers ✅ Healthy, sustainable #food choices for all ✅ #Climate resilience and generational renewal ✅ Systemic collaboration to unite stakeholders “Let 2030 be the year we look back and say: this was the moment Europe got the recipe right.” 📖 https://lnkd.in/e5iyA-MX #FoodSystems #Sustainability 🌍#Agriculture 🚜#Leadership

The year is 2030. 🅰️ A thriving Europe: vibrant farmers’ markets teem with fresh, sustainable food. Fair prices and public support allow farmers to prosper, while young farmers access affordable land. OR 🅱️ A failing Europe: Farmers face greater financial precarity. Ultra-processed foods dominate, farms struggle to withstand extreme weather, and Europe’s agrifood policy remains unfit to rise to the challenge. Which path will the EU’s new Agriculture & Food Commissioner, Christophe Hansen, choose? He inherits an extraordinary opportunity – and an equally extraordinary responsibility... Latest op-ed by Olivier De Schutter for EUobserver 📖 https://lnkd.in/e5iyA-MX #Food #Farming #Agriculture #Foodsystems
