🔥 Renovating Europe’s homes is about more than reducing energy bills or cutting emissions—it is about saving lives. In the EU, faulty electrical installations cause 273,000 fires every year. That is 30% of all domestic fires. Many of these could be prevented. This morning, I joined a panel at the EU Fire Safety Week to talk about how the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) could make homes safer across Europe. Let me remind you why this matters: In the winter of 2015, Rosa, an elderly woman in Spain, lit candles after her electricity was shut off. Rosa had no choice. Her apartment caught fire, and she lost her life. Energy poverty and unsafe housing made her vulnerable. The EED and EPBD have introduced provisions to prevent disconnection. But more can be done: • 132 million homes in Europe have unsafe electrical installations. That is like every home in the 20 largest cities in Europe having dangerous wiring. • 10% of Europeans live in energy poverty. These households often rely on unsafe alternatives like candles or firewood, increasing fire risks. As Theresa Griffin said, the poorest live in the least efficient housing and the more prone to fires. • Climate change adds to the pressure. Cooling could make up 71% of residential energy use in Southern Europe by 2050. Outdated electrical systems are not ready for this. What can we do? 1. Target renovations at the worst-performing homes. By 2030, the EU plans to renovate the worst 15% of buildings. Let us make fire safety and electrical upgrades part of these renovations. 2. Introduce mandatory safety inspections. Countries like Japan show it works—24 times fewer electrical fires thanks to regular inspections. 3. Support vulnerable households. Provide targeted funding, tenant protections, and one-stop-shops offering advice on energy safety and efficiency. Renovating Europe’s homes is not just about reducing energy bills or cutting emissions. It is about saving lives. Rosa’s story must not be repeated. Governments must act to protect the most vulnerable while building safer, more sustainable homes. 🔥 Trust burns with every preventable fire.
