The new #TransformativeChange Assessment IPBES report Summary for Policymakers is released today. This report focuses on the underlying drivers of biodiversity loss and the kind of system-wide changes needed to conserve and restore biodiversity for a more just and sustainable world. Echoing the calls made in our recent publications Navigating the Future VI #NFVIOcean (https://lnkd.in/gyGRxEga) and Coastal Resilience (https://lnkd.in/eu8jyGkW), it calls for adaptive governance systems and plans, policy coherence across sectors, and participation to make transformative change processes more equitable. The report also highlights the importance of diverse actors in building momentum for change. The document also highlights cultural approaches to transformative change, which we are also looking to with our #EMBracingtheOcean artist-in residence programme (https://lnkd.in/e4tTdcCS). Of specific relevance to the Ocean, it notes the importance of increased attention to the ecological implications of such deep-sea mining on deep-sea ocean functioning, a topic which our working group on Deep Sea and Ocean Health will publish on imminently (https://lnkd.in/eZu_cC3m). You can read the IPBES document here: https://lnkd.in/dab8yugv

Today IPBES launches the Summary for Policymakers of its #NexusAssessment Report 🌍 . This report exploring the interlinkages and interconnections between crises in biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change. Some notes of relevance for the #Ocean 🌊 : - Proposed responses to address nexus interactions include integrated landscape and seascape management as a positive for all elements, but caution that e.g. offshore energy should be properly implemented to avoid negative impacts on other elements. This links well to the messages from our Coastal Resilience documents (https://lnkd.in/dEHbfBSu) - Background information acknowledges threats marine ecosystems are facing, e.g. from climate and overconsumption, but also highlights their value in e.g. carbon sequestration – see our document on Blue carbon for more on this (https://lnkd.in/ekUmKyH6) - Echoing the messages from our foresight document Navigating the Future VI #NFVIOcean (https://lnkd.in/gyGRxEga), they recognise and encourage integrated approaches incorporating planning and governance for use of land and sea areas to support water quality improvement, biodiversity conservation and buffer climate extremes - They note the lack of complete knowledge on marine carbon dioxide removal approaches and their potential impacts, something our ongoing working group on marine CDR can help to address (https://lnkd.in/evWwsQc4) You can read the IPBES publication and press release here: https://lnkd.in/d__2Hn6m

🔬 Bridging Science and Media 🗞️: What’s Needed for Success? 🍀 What a stimulating session at Instituto Español de Oceanografía in Malaga!! As part of CommOcean, we organized with Casa Mediterráneo a roundtable discussion with outstanding Mediterranean journalists on 27 November 2024. This dialogue session helped bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding, facilitating a meaningful debate and useful tips among professional media communicators and scientists. Through innovative approaches ranging from multimedia stories, TV documentaries, radio soap operas and digital storytelling, our expert panellists Manfred Oepen of IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), Denis Loctier of Euronews, Rehab Abd Almohsen, Science, Environment and Health Journalist, Xavier Aldekoa and Laura Aragó of La Vanguardia, moderated by Chantal MENARD, shared insights to produce meaningful stories with an impact on people. Here is a summary: 🌱Any topic can become a successful story as long as it connects to people’s lives. Emotional storytelling balanced with scientific credibility makes complex topics more powerful. 🧜♂️ When it comes to science, innovative ways to fight fake news and false narratives are of paramount importance. 🤝 Trust and exchanges between scientists and journalists are needed to ensure authenticity and impact; beware of AI contents! 💚The “Love not Loss” approach works better than fatalistic news. News should give hope and inspire optimism by showing feasible actions and solutions. 🫂 Fieldwork is important to understand local realities. Stories should be about people, their aspirations and concerns, so that contents resonate. 🚨Contrasting ideas or scenarios can make stories easier to digest, highlighting differences between inaction/action or short-term gains/long-term sustainability. 🌈Diverse approaches are needed to reach different audiences. Some might connect through personal narratives while others prefer data driven stories. 💡Turning research into storytelling, radio interviews, drama series, and other forms of art can bridge the science and society gaps. 👀 Visual aids make scientific concepts easier to understand. We hope that the graphic illustrations by Yorgos Konstantinou will help you remember these meaningful tips to better communicate our common need to engage and protect our planet. Coastal systems face increasing and interacting pressures due to climate change and various human activities. Building resilience of coastal ecosystems and human communities is essential for them to persist, adapt or transform whilst maintaining their essential functions, and to safeguard life, ecosystems and economies. EMB Policy Brief No. 12 ‘Requirements for Coastal Resilience in Europe’, published today, presents key policy, scientific and community recommendations for building coastal resilience and enhancing the capacity to cope with impacts from coastal pressures. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/dEHbfBSu and during the 9th EMB Forum on 2 April 2025 on 'Addressing coastal and water resilience on the land-sea interface'.

🚀 As the new #EuropeanCommission commences, we are highlighting the Vigo Declaration in our official communications to the Commissioners. Signed by all European #marine science networks at #EurOCEAN2023, this declaration calls for united action to achieve the "One Ocean" we envision. ❕ ❗ The Vigo Declaration emphasizes the urgent need to address climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, recognizing the Ocean's critical role in sustaining life on Earth. Europe should take leadership in living within Ocean and planetary boundaries, promoting social and economic justice, and ensuring that all society benefits from our One Ocean. We specifically call for: 🏖️ Integrated Land-Sea Policies and Management: Aligning marine and land policies for coherent, adaptive management of socio-ecological systems. 🛥️ Sustained and Better Coordinated Ocean Observation: Supporting coordinated Ocean Observation to deliver essential Ocean Knowledge and an effective European Digital Twin of the Ocean. 👥 Committed Citizens: Engaging citizens through Ocean Literacy, science communication, art and participatory initiatives to foster empathy and involvement in Ocean sustainability. We stand united with the strategic objectives of the Mission Ocean, and are committed to delivering the science needed for the Ocean we want under the UN Ocean Decade. Moving beyond the economic value of the Ocean Our new publication Navigating the Future VI (NFVI) challenges the way we currently govern the Ocean, which is focused on economic resources. Today national governments come together in Windhoek, Namibia, at the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), to discuss the interlinkages between biodiversity, water, food and human health. Given that we all depend on the Ocean for our survival, it is timely to raise the question of whether the status quo is really equitable and just. Does it take into account the perspectives and needs of everyone or just a privileged few? Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gyGRxEga 🗣️ Join the conversation using #NFVIOcean #NFVIOcean #NavigatingTheFutureVI #OceanScience #MarinePolicy #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EuropeanMarineBoard
