Europeans want the European Union to address looming crises, including growing inequalities, increases in non-communicable diseases and mental health problems, and climate change. Will the new College of European Commissioners meet their expectations? Yesterday, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the new European Commissioners and their portfolios. While the College will focus strongly on boosting competitiveness, we worry it might have lost sight of one lesson learned during COVID-19: without good health, a society cannot thrive. In a news release, published today, EuroHealthNet expresses concerns about the lack of visibility of policies that improve health and address inequalities in the new Commissioners' portfolios. These should go hand in hand with the current EU narrative on boosting competitiveness. With 2.6 million lives lost globally to alcohol-related causes in 2019 alone, the need is clear: we must prioritise public health over profits. Industries such as #alcohol and #tobacco often put profits above public health—but together, we can help change that. Today, WHO Regional Office for Europe launches its 'Alcohol Policy Playbook', equipping policymakers with the evidence-based strategies they need for meaningful alcohol regulation (link to the Playbook in the post below 👇). This December, in collaboration with our member Santé publique France, we’re organising a scientific symposium, ‘Reducing the Burden of Alcohol: Focus on Two Scientific and Public Policy Challenges.’ Join us on Tuesday, 3 December, in #Brussels or online, to be part of the conversation as we continue to call for policies that protect the wellbeing of our communities and future generations. 🔗 Want more info on this event and how to register? Today, WHO/Europe launches the Alcohol Policy Playbook, designed to help policymakers navigate the ever-present debates around alcohol harms and alcohol policy. The Playbook counters the industry’s narrative by presenting scientific evidence showing: 🍷🚫 that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for health and cancer risk 👪 that alcohol inflicts widespread harm across all segments of the population 📉 that countries lose more than they gain from alcohol sales 💪 and that public policies are effective in protecting health and safety. What role do public policies play in helping children reach their full potential and well-being? On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the event "𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭-𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨," hosted in by MEP Ewa Kopacz, Vice-President of the European Parliament and European Parliament Coordination on Children's Rights, at the European Parliament Info Hub. We talked about how government spending and well-designed child policies can help fight poverty, reduce inequality, and improve children’s development. Investing in children, especially in the early years, is crucial, but poorly designed policies or low funding can prevent them from reaching their full potential. As part of the discussion, I presented the #Schools4Health project led by EuroHealthNet and highlighted how different sectors can work together to encourage and enable school communities to adopt a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Schools4Health is also cited as a project example in the recently published European Commission guidelines on supporting wellbeing and mental health at school. You can learn more about their 11 recommendations to implement a whole-system and whole-school approach to wellbeing here: https://lnkd.in/gqH8mcx2 It was great to see speakers from both the educational and health sector come together to speak about how to improve the quality of childhood in Europe, this kind of cross-sector collaboration is exactly what we need to make a change! Today, we were honoured to deliver a joint statement to the 74th Regional Committee of the WHO Regional Office for Europe to welcome the regional strategy and action plan for health emergency preparedness, response and resilience, known more simply as “Preparedness 2.0”. We were thankful to receive support for the statement from our partners, the european federation of nurses associations, the European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC), the European Heart Network (EHN), the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), EUPHA - European Public Health Association, the International Diabetes Federation Europe, and IFMSA | International Federation of Medical Students' Associations. Our colleague, Alison Maassen made four specific recommendations to support the effective implementation of the plan. They were: 1️⃣ Strengthen the focus on #HealthPromotion: Community preparedness and 'whole-of-government' responses shouldn't just be a focus during a crisis. They need to work well before a crisis to work well during a crisis. 2️⃣ Promote cross-sectoral governance: During a health emergency, governments must not only listen to health experts. They must involve leaders from other sectors, such as education, employment and environment, to address health determinants, as well as ensure community participation. 3️⃣ Scale #MentalHealth services: A “dual-track” approach to mental health with surge capacity will support both the community's and health worker's needs in times of crisis. 4️⃣ Strengthen #ClimateCrisis resilience: By building on WHO guidance and implementing measures such as heat-health action plans and flood-resilient infrastructures, we can protect vulnerable populations and enhance equity. EuroHealthNet congratulates WHO Regional Office for Europe and in particular Natasha Azzopardi Muscat for the Framework for resilient and sustainable health systems in Europe 2025-2030. It contains eight priority action areas which would indeed be transformational, if fully implemented. To support their effective implementation, in its statement, EuroHealthNet stresses to ensure a strong focus on: ▶️ Equity in all the actions, including mitigating the risks of leaving people behind during the digital transition. ▶️ Cross-sectoral collaboration, including collecting, analyse, and use data from across sectors to effectively measure the impacts of determinants of health ▶️ Investing in health and work towards a Wellbeing Economy. By better coordination to address drivers of ill-health, and greening health services, we can improve the resilience and sustainability of health systems. ▶️ Social innovations: boosting primary health care, health promotion and disease prevention is vital for the success of this Framework. New models such as social prescribing, offer great potential to enhance the effectiveness and resilience of health systems. The future of health systems demands bold leadership, innovative thinking, and a commitment to transformation. EuroHealthNet looks forward to contribute and work with countries, NIPHs and World Health Organization colleagues. #RC74CPH #RC74 Melitta Jakab, Domenti Oxana, Francesca Racioppi, Christine Brown, Robb Butler, Ewout van Ginneken, Katrine Bach Habersaat, Stefania Ilinca EuroHealthNets statement: https://lnkd.in/eSJ3Ev3j The WHO Framework: https://lnkd.in/e9mFsfrQ

In her Mission Letters to the candidates for EU Commissioner, Ursula von der Leyen has been clear. The #EU is entering a new era of participative democracy, where #CitizenParticipation and dialogue are central to policymaking. Today, EuroHealthNet joins Von der Leyen's call for citizen participation by launching its latest #PolicyPrécis, which helps decision-makers and public health authorities create space for dialogue in their own work. Involving citizens in the development of policies and practices helps ensure that they reflect community needs, enjoy support, and are sustainable. It's especially powerful in public health, as dialogue can help decrease health inequalities and provide transparency about how decisions are made. As we approach the next two weeks of confirmation hearings of the EU Commissioners-designate, we anticipate discussions on how new leadership will promote participatory policymaking. We especially look forward to hearing from Glenn Micallef, proposed Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport. If confirmed, he will be tasked with organising a youth policy dialogue and creating a youth advisory board to engage directly with the European Commission President. Excellent key note speech by Dr Hans Kluge, Regional Director WHO Regional Office for Europe, as ever, this morning. He presented four key areas for innovation: ✔️ 1 -work on guaranteeing national health security, in the context of war, pandemics, AMR and he was stressing the One Health approach ✔️ 2 -unfinished work regarding the burden of NCDs and mental health, accelerate action on the NCD targets through the ''best buys'' and action on the commercial determinants ✔️ 3 -work on the climate crisis which is also a health crisis, announcing the launch of a new pan-European Commission on Climate and Health in Reykjavik next year. ✔️4 -lead an Action Framework on ageing well in society, starting with a young peoples health strategy and integrating health & social services for ageing well in dignity, reflecting an Economy of Wellbeing. Hans Kluge also made an important call to better protect woman and children against any form of violence and harassment.
