The work that earned Wouter Meynendonckx a Carsten Spohn Award in September is now a journal article! Well done! 👏
PhD Researcher | Impact of combustion control on HCl and SO2 generation in Waste-to-Energy grate-furnaces
Achievement! 💪 Published my first journal article! 📰 ✒️ Impact of furnace and waste layer control on HCl and SO2 in combustion gas from a grate-fired Waste-to-Energy boiler 📑 Journal Process Safety and Environmental Protection After winning CEWEP's first Carsten Spohn Award with this abstract, we were even more motivated to upgrade this work to a full journal article. ✍ Analyzing industrial process data from an engineering standpoint and with data-driven methods like neural networks offered valuable insights on how furnace and waste layer control influences HCl and SO2 in combustion gas from a grate-fired Waste-to-Energy boiler 🔥🗑️ 🎙️ Special shout-out to the co-authors Johan De Greef, Mariya Ishteva, Mathias Verbeke and Nick Alderweireldt. Thanks to Indaver and VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship for making this PhD research possible.

🧭 100 measures for 100 days 🌍 As the new European Commission has taken office this week, the first 100 days represent a critical window to set a transformative course for accelerating the transition to a net-zero future. European Net Zero Alliance (ENZA) is proud to present "100 measures for 100 days" - a roadmap presenting a variety of solutions that different industries offer to contribute to the energy transition, and actionable recommendations to provide EU leaders with strategies to strengthen Europe's competitiveness, resilience and sustainability. 🟢 The measures outlined in this document have the potential to inform and shape key policy initiatives aimed at addressing these critical objectives. 📑 Explore the full report below or on our website: https://lnkd.in/egKD54Wq Bioenergy Europe | CEDEC- European Federation of Local & Regional Energy Companies | COGEN Europe | ePURE: European renewable ethanol association | Eurogas | Cerame-Unie | EUTurbines - European Association of Gas and Steam Turbine Manufacturers | GEODE - The voice of local energy distributors across Europe | EUGINE – The European Engine Power Plants Association | Hydrogen Europe | CEWEP | European Builders Confederation EBC | ESWET - European Suppliers of Waste-to-Energy Technology | ETN Global | Fertilizers Europe | Solar Heat Europe (ESTIF) | EHI - Association of the European Heating Industry | Cepi | CEFS (EU SUGAR) | EWABA | SMEunited

| I had the true pleasure to offer a virtual contribution on behalf of CEWEP to the COP29 Azerbaijan in #Baku within the event organized at the Waste and Resources Pavilion “Reducing Methane & GHG emissions by diverting Waste into Energy”. By diverting potentially recoverable waste from #landfills to higher steps in the waste hierarchy such as Recycling and Waste to Energy, #methane emissions can be significantly cut. Methane is a greenhouse gas much more potent than CO2, that society tends to underestimate. Methane has a Global Warming Potential 28x times more than CO2 on a 100 years perspective, and 86x times more on a shorter-term (20 years). Cutting methane emissions could lead to a rapid fight towards #ClimateChange. It was great to see the Organic Waste Methane Reduction Declaration signed this year at COP29 Azerbaijan. It’s an historic achievement. Let’s also not forget that, although #biowaste is more and more collected separately from households and despite the many efforts geared towards achieving higher #recycling rates of it, considerable amounts of biodegradable matter inevitably remain in residual waste streams. Waste to Energy plants can offer valid solutions to close the loop while keeping #circulareconomy streams clean. Thanks ISWA International Solid Waste Association for the invitation and the organization of these important discussions. |
Snapshots from Days 5 and 6 from Baku, at COP29 Azerbaijan. ISWA's delegates and partners have covered lots of ground between the Green and Blue Zones, attending and hosting sessions on food loss, reducing GHG emissions, climate finance, social business and innovating for a just transition towards a circular economy. With each session, the mission for #ISWAatCOP remains the same: urge member states to integrate sustainable waste strategies into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). By improving waste management, we can prevent up to 20% of the total anthropogenic GHG emissions in the world - one of the most significant opportunities for climate mitigation available today. ISWA's delegation returns to the Waste and Resources Pavilion on Monday morning, for Week 2 of #COP29. Hit the link in the comments to see scheduled sessions at the Pavilion, and meet us there!

The project will capture CO2 coming out of the chimneys of the Ferrara Waste-to-Energy plant and store it in a depleted natural gas field, thus significantly reducing emissions from the plant. This industrial CO2 capture project is the first in Italy designed to be applied to a Waste-to-Energy plant and among the first in Europe. 🦾 The project has been selected to receive almost 24M EUR in funding under the fourth call for mid-scale projects of the EU Innovation Fund. Well done! 👏 Gruppo Hera #WasteToEnergy #EUInnovationFund
📣 Gruppo Hera and Saipem's CO₂ capture project has been selected to receive nearly €24 million in funding from the EU Innovation Fund. Our #Bluenzyme solution, powered by the enzymatic “CO2 Solutions by Saipem” technology, is expected to be applied to capture CO₂ emissions at the waste-to-energy plant of the subsidiary Herambiente in Ferrara, Italy. It will be the first industrial-scale example of CCS applied to a plant of this type in Italy and among the first in Europe. The project is one of the main decarbonization levers in the multi-utility's Climate Transition Plan to reduce internal emissions. The evaluation criteria for the EU Innovation Fund have confirmed Bluenzyme’s key role in terms of innovation, contribution to the decarbonization processes of small and medium emitters in hard-to-abate sectors, and its replicability.
