🦁 Uganda wildlife survey released 🦁 A new survey has found lion numbers are low, while hyenas are faring well across four major protected areas in Uganda. The major study, co-led by Griffith University, Southern University of Science and Technology (China), and Northern Arizona University, is the first comprehensive population estimate of Uganda’s lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas in almost two decades. Griffith University lead researcher Dr Braczkowski said the survey brought together more than 100 participants from 20 different NGOs, lodges, and conservation groups. "The collaborative nature of this work – spanning governments, NGOs, and local communities – is a testament to what’s possible for wildlife conservation," he said. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gkSTAm3v

Congratulations to Master of Architecture student Mahima Herath, who won third place in the 2024 Humanitarian Innovation Pitch, organised by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney! Mahima's research-by-design focused on improving the lives of Syrian refugees in the 70,000-person Zaatari Refugee Camp, in Jordan, by enhancing their access to primary healthcare services within their semi-permanent refugee camp, promoting good health and wellbeing in this highly vulnerable community. Growing up and studying in Sri Lanka to completing his post-graduate studies in Australia at Griffith University is a journey he credits with informing his approach to 'democratic architecture'. “People-centric design is my goal,” Mahima said. “This project is about more than just design, it’s about understanding the cultural context and creating spaces that truly serve the people who need them most.” Mahima completed his Masters of Architecture in 2024 and is now working at renowned Gold Coast firm Burling Brown Architects.
