Here’s one POWERFUL factor you’re leaving out of your branding (costing you time, money, and joy in your business). Most advisers, consultants, and coaches talk in their brand message about what they WILL do. But many forget to talk about what they will NOT do. Forgetting this results in more non-aligned prospects and clients to manage, taking up sales and delivery bandwidth. More importantly, it also results in your best clients not clearly recognising you – meaning they might never work with you. Knowing – then stating – what you will NOT do moulds your brand and business strategy as well as stating what you WILL do. -- 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨 ↓ ❌ I will never turn my business into a content mill or an agency that treats clients as a number. If you work with me, you enter into a strategy-first co-creative partnership to get permanent change and long-term results. I won't hire anyone who’s not a top-notch copywriter and a total master at strategy to go anywhere near our client cases. ❌ Be a ‘yes' woman. I will never just tell you what you want to hear and take your money. I’ll call out if you're doing something that will stagnate the growth of your brand and business, even if it means losing you as a client. ❌ Post boring clichéd corporate-style content. It provides no value, does nothing to educate, stimulate, provide clarity, or inspire – or achieve an outcome. It just creates noise on the internet. ❌ Do any project without a strategy. Whether I’m building your offers with you, creating content with you, writing messaging sequences with you, or creating sales or recruitment systems with you, it is always done WITH you so that we create your strategy together – and you always own and control your strategy. Any business owner who says “We just want you to do it for us – we’d prefer not to have any involvement” – gets a hard “no.” (Plenty of agencies out there that will take your money and get you no results if you insist on that, though!). ❌ Sell you an offer that won't work for you. I say no to money all the time by referring people on because they’re not a fit for what I do or how I do it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I won't sell you something you don't need or won’t respond to. ❌ Work with anyone whose business does harm to the world. Earlier in my business journey, much to my horror, someone who manufactures 𝘨𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 who planned to sell them to the U.S. military wanted help with his business and marketing strategy. I honestly didn’t even have words for that one (other than “hell no”). We must know what we stand FOR. And what we stand AGAINST. The best managers always have time for their people. And the reason many don't is simple. When I took over a 350-person division for an investment bank – in the wake of a takeover – all I saw was... *) Low Morale and Engagement *) Frequent misunderstandings or breakdowns in communication *) Missed Deadlines and Targets *) Conflict and Tension or a generally tense atmosphere *) High Employee Turnover or Absence When I spoke with my new department heads, I heard the same thing, over and over... "I'm too busy to spend time with my people". When I asked them where their time was going, it became clear that 'people' were not their highest priority. That's what I changed first. But over the years, one lesson has become crystal clear: success truly begins within. I’ve learned that self-respect, confidence, and authenticity aren’t just personal values—they’re powerful leadership tools. Here’s how they’ve guided my journey: > Self-respect guides my decisions > When I truly value myself, my choices naturally align with my core values. > This authenticity attracts trust from clients, teams, and partners. 5 lessons I’ve learnt over the first 6 months of building a subscription-led, low ticket business. 1 | Have a long-term mindset Moving from selling high-ticket coaching to low-ticket subscription is a long-term game. (I’m currently putting in 10x more hours to make 10% of the money). But as my MRR (monthly recurring revenue) grows, I know I’m doing the right thing for the long term. It’s definitely super important to have the right mindset going into it and I think I needed a bit more of this. (I was overly optimistic, but you sort of have to be I think, otherwise I’d never start). Key learning: it’s going to take longer and cost more than you thought it would. 2 | Always be adjusting, testing new features and coming up with new ideas I've learnt to launch new features fast and often until I find the ones which work. This has been really helpful to understand what people are using and not using. I’m constantly pumping out new ideas to see which ones help people get their result (and which ones I should ditch). Key learning: seek feedback, launch often and test. 3 | Detach your ego and what you THINK you need I had to learn to let go of what I thought I ‘needed’ . I’m still working on releasing my attachment to things that aren’t working. (this is a lifelong journey for some people). Doing the inner work on my mindset so I can let go fast has been key. The worst thing you can do is be emotionally attached to any part of your product or marketing strategy, Because you’re just crowding and preventing better things from coming. Key learning: if something isn’t working there’s no point holding on to it. 4 | Embrace that 50% of your job will always be marketing I’ve found that I can never really take my foot off the gas on marketing, And I’ve accepted that this will never change. This is the reality with a low-ticket, subscription product. Luckily I’m an absolute marketing nerd so I’m prepared for this. Staying ahead of churn and acquiring new members is what will allow me to build a business with decent income. Key learning: you always need to be marketing - don’t expect this to change. 5 | Be clear on the vision for your business A key piece of my journey has been developing a REALLY clear vision of why I’m doing this, But not just for myself. It’s about the impact I want to have on the world. This vision is the driving factor that pulls me forward when I’m not seeing ‘fast success’. As someone who struggles with ADHD and addiction, it gets tough when I’m not seeing instant results. But my clear vision is what keeps me on track. This can also help you when you’re not seeing results right away. (ps I have a great tool for getting clarity on your personal brand vision, link in comments) Key learning: a clear vision will help you so you don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Such a great post from Janine. I wholeheartedly agree that mindset is crucial in sales! It’s the driving force behind how we perceive challenges and opportunities. As you mentioned, it's about believing in yourself, your product, and the value you bring. I used to think sales was about manipulation—tricking people into buying what I was selling. But then I realized that I can't go around my true nature as a helper and fixer. I began to see sales as a service, focused on genuinely understanding and meeting people's needs with honesty and integrity. Sometimes, this meant acknowledging that my product wasn't the right fit for them. This shift in mindset opened up a whole new perspective on sales for me.
