This training emphasised the power of looking out for one another and the impact we can make by being approachable and taking the time to really dig deep and start these conversations no matter how tricky it seems. Minimum wage increases from today A reminder to employers that a 3.75 per cent minimum wage increase should be applied to eligible employees’ pay from the first full pay period starting on or after today, 1 July 2024. The new National Minimum Wage is $915.90 per week (based on a 38-hour week for a full-time employee) or $24.10 per hour. This is an increase from $882.80 per week and $23.23 per hour. Casual employees entitled to the National Minimum Wage must receive a minimum of $30.13 per hour, which includes a 25 per cent casual loading.

What salary do you need to purchase the home of your dreams? Research from money.com.au reveals if you want to buy a million dollar property with 20% deposit, you’ll need a household income of $165,000 pretax. We’ve taken it one step further and crunched the numbers for you on other property prices because hey, not everyone wants to buy a million dollar property. But how much do you need to be earning to secure your next property? Got your sights on securing your first home at $600k with a 5% deposit?  You’ll need to be earning a household income of $125 pretax. Maybe you’ve seen a property that’s around $750k for your first home with a 5% deposit. Then a household income of 145k pretax is required. (Note the jump between a 600k and 750k home) Now, what if it’s not your first home? The numbers will vary. Let’s take a look.  For a $600k property with a 10% deposit, you’ll need to have a household income of $115k minimum. And a $750k property with a 10% deposit will require a minimum household income of $145k.  There are so many variants and considerations and the calculations above assume no credit cards or liabilities. We welcome the WA Industrial Relations Commission decision which provides for a 6.3% increase to the State Minimum Wage, and a 4 per cent increase for award-based pay. This takes adults employees in the state system to $24.15 per hour, which equates to $917.80 per week, on full time hours. That's an extra $54 per week in the pockets of those who need it. This is meaningful change that will assist so many Western Australians who are facing escalating living costs and financial hardship. Independent Contractors Update: (Part 2) There are approximately 1 million workers (around 7.5% of the workforce) engaged as Independent Contractors in Australia. We continue with 25 key points to consider when engaging independent contractors for your business: 10. Health & Safety Documentation: Provide the necessary WHS documentation such as: * WHS Policies and Procedures: To outline safety expectations. * Risk Assessments: To identify hazards and assess risks. * Incident Reporting Systems: For injuries or near-misses. * Emergency Procedures: Including contacts and evacuation plans. * Safety Inductions & Checklists: To ensure contractors are informed of site-specific risks. * Safety Data Sheets (SDS): For hazardous substances. * PPE Requirements: Specifying necessary protective gear. * Training Records: For any WHS training provided. * Permit to Work: For high-risk tasks like hot work or confined space entry. 11. Consultation and Cooperation: Cooperate and consult with contractors about health and safety. Ensure they are informed of any potential hazards in their work environment and take steps to mitigate them. (And ensure it is documented, or it didn’t happen) 12. Risk Assessments: Conduct risk assessments for the work the contractor will perform. This involves identifying hazards, assessing their risks, and putting in place control measures to reduce those risks, such as ensuring safe equipment and environments. 13. Training and Induction: Provide contractors with appropriate health and safety training or an induction to ensure they are familiar with site-specific hazards, emergency procedures, and required safety practices. This helps towards ensuring their safety and compliance with WHS regulations. 14. Supervision and Control: While contractors typically operate independently, for high-risk tasks, some level of supervision may be necessary. Ensure that contractors follow safe work practices and report any hazards or incidents, especially for tasks that carry inherent risks. 15. Contractor Insurance: Ensure that contractors hold appropriate insurance (e.g., public liability and workers' compensation). While these insurances protect against certain risks, remember they do not cover breaches of WHS obligations. You may still be liable if safety standards are not met.
