Concept design which involved building services and facade strategies.

Valued at over $6 billion AUD, Barangaroo is Sydney's largest redevelopment project this century and will evolve over the next 10 to 20 years, injecting more than $1.5 billion AUD into the NSW economy annually.

Barangaroo is located on the western edge of Sydney's CBD, on the shores of our world famous harbour. It is currently 22 hectares of disused container wharves.

It will include six hectares of a new headland park, busy public waterfront walks and parks, commercial office towers and apartments, all serviced by new and extended transport systems.

Pioneering green building. CIBSE 2007 Building of the Year at BSJ's Sustainable Building Services Awards.

Heavily involved with design of tri-generation system, water recycling, evaporative cooling "shower towers", HVAC system, façade design, thin client workspace, phase change material tank, chilled ceilings, wind turbines, passive chimneys, undulating concrete thermally massive ceilings. Building ended up consuming 70% less than same sized existing building.

The office plates are conditioned with chilled beams to minimize energy use, which, in conjunction with integral exterior sunshading, rainwater harvesting and careful material selection, achieved the first five-star Green Star rating for a NSW government building.

The office areas are serviceable and well illuminated and enjoy a district outlook, but it is really the atrium between the core and the commercial spaces where the architects have secreted some fat in the project budget with which to play. A ten-storey glazed atrium links all levels of the building and cubic meeting pods alternately project out into the space at each level. This creates a rich spatial complexity and voyeuristic transparency between different parts of the building, in contrast to the horizontally striated office plates with their higher security clearance levels. The breakout spaces that open off the glazed bridges have operable windows and natural ventilation, and overlook the Parramatta Parklands to the west.
