Some serious insights from David Leitch and ITK Services Australia on the SW (Riverina) REZ ... and crucially Hume Link. Some of it - especially those opposed to Hume Link - as against the local REZ community supporting wind and solar development - will not be welcomed esp the bit about the suggestion that Hume Link needs double the capacity (so two circuits). If that is the case there's a lot of questions that need to be answered ... and sooner rather that later. Personally I believe we need to find solutions, to deliver the lowest community cost of energy, and also maximum benefits. As someone who still thinks of themselves as a "bushie" I lament the lack of pragmatism, even recalcitrance of some in the bush to extract the maximum community benefit as part of negotiations, be that hospitals, health (GP and other services), education, policing, regional development (through decentralisation), etc. However don't mistake that pragmatism for disrespect of individual and community rights - though those two things can be in conflict. It seems one of the biggest challenges remains "visual impact" on parties not hosting facilities - esp where's no individual compensation or not enough community compensation/benefit. This is where governments at all levels need to step in and take leadership role - especially through providing better community outcomes (in areas of Australia that have long missed out on government services and support) The biggest frustration I have though is reserved for the resurgence of nuclear - supposedly as a solution to stop renewable and transmission projects. Bluntly nuclear, as is the start of the art today, is simply not a viable operational or economic option in Australia. Those that argue for it a creating a distraction that actually is not addressing what their real/genuine concerns are, rather they are actually harming the prospects of actually getting good outcomes from something that is going to happen. Australia is one the luckiest nations with respect Renewable Energy Resources - the cheapest lowest carbon generation there is. We just have to make sure that we look at, and ensure that Agricultural activities are not sidelined but facilitated - AgriVoltiacs for example can deliver increased wool and meat yields from sheep grazing while ensuring a stable "off farm" income. New research from #Australia's national science agency has found AI could help solve quantum computing errors. This is a key step which could one day lead to quantum computers solving complex real-world problems. CSIRO research found for the first time that AI could help process & resolve #QuantumErrors known as #QubitNoise, which are generated by the nature of #QuantumPhysics. Overcoming these errors is considered the largest barrier to advanced quantum computers from experiment to tool. Quantum computing devices are made up of quantum bits, or "qubits." These work on the special properties of quantum mechanics, allowing them to represent 0, 1, or both 0 and 1 at the same time. This is anticipated to unlock immense computing power, allowing them to solve problems beyond the reach of conventional computers. But a qubit's delicate nature also leads quantum computers to generate 'noise," or errors, in their outputs. To overcome this, quantum #ErrorCorrectionCodes are used to detect and correct errors. CSIRO implemented an AI neural network syndrome decoder to detect errors and make appropriate corrections. CSIRO's Data61 Quantum Systems Team Leader Dr. Muhammad Usman said this work can efficiently process complex errors from real quantum hardware. "Our work for the first time establishes that a machine learning-based decoder can, in principle, process error information obtained directly from measurements on IBM devices and suggest suitable corrections despite the very complex nature of noise," he said. Quantum error correction codes have been developed to combat the underlying physical noise of qubits by spreading logical information across many #PhysicalQubits. These codes interpret error information by measuring stabilizers within a lattice of qubits—called a #SyndromeMeasurement. An efficient, fast, and scalable implementation of a computationally expensive syndrome processing step is crucial for the overall performance of quantum error correction codes. To improve this correction efficiency, Dr. Usman implemented & trained an artificial neural network syndrome decoder. The neural network decoder's performance was directly benchmarked on IBM quantum processors, demonstrating it can efficiently process complex errors from real quantum hardware and make appropriate corrections. The research suggests that as the physical error rates are reduced within the next few years, AI could enable error suppression with the increasing code distance, even achieving full fault-tolerance when the code distance becomes suitably large.

I think it's fantastic that CSIRO is investing in #HPC capability rather than relying on public cloud infrastructures - sovereign capability in #AI is something that is under-recognised as a strategic resource. All over the globe, governments recognize the AI arms race is on. Specifically there's a growing conversation about the long term economic and security importance of developing "sovereign artificial intelligence (AI)". In Australia there is a lag in AI research and development. Here's a thought-provoking question: Should Australia invest taxpayer dollars into solar panel manufacturing, or should we focus on cultivating an industry capable of powering the manufacturing of intelligence for the 4th Industrial Revolution? A report from the CSIRO highlights that Australia is behind in creating foundational AI models, such as those used by OpenAI's ChatGPT, with the majority being developed overseas. This gap could affect Australia's ability to use AI to boost productivity and strengthen the economy. Professor Anton van den Hengel from the University of Adelaide points out that AI could significantly enhance efficiency in industries, a process that could span the next two decades. He emphasizes the importance of sovereign AI in capitalizing on economic opportunities that AI can provide, including applications not yet imagined. The issue also extends to education and infrastructure. For instance, using AI models developed abroad might compromise Australian values or priorities and could pose security and cultural risks.
