It was great attending the first Google SMB Summit for Australian Tourism operators in accommodation, food, and experiences at the Sydney Google offices. The event had speakers from Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) discussing why our businesses need a digital platform that shows us off and helps us to be discovered quickly by customers around the world. We heard more about the massive uptake in AI and the importance of quality video and photos in driving this. ( Having been at the Climate Action Week Sydney event the previous night on the role of data centres in climate change and learning that AI is driving up power usage, I need to look at this challenge carefully!) We heard key insights about the marketplace from Christoph Rosecheck and Christopher Siantar.   Key inbound and outbound travel trends searches for Hotels vs Airbnb are now at the same level! searches for Woolies, restaurants and Menulog are changing as our spending patterns change. It looks like travellers are booking an Airbnb, and rather than eating out, they are shopping at Woolies and cooking at home.  “quality trumps quantity” when searching for accommodation, experiences and food. In our break-out sessions, it was great to learn more about the Google Business profile with Arindam Das and how we can use it to drive engagement. I am so happy to see a business sustainability feature that allows businesses to show off their actions to reduce emissions and waste and add in Eco Certificates. It was interesting to see the new tool we can use to compare our nightly rates to other accommodation providers in the area. I was happy to hear more about the Google flight search team, which set up the flight search feature as a fun page to compare flights, prices, and carbon emissions.   It is inspiring to hear data from the platform showing users searching for flights and choosing flights with lower emissions!  Sustainable Travel is here and happening, and it is great to hear that users are making more sustainable choices!    It was lovely to hear from Mark that vintage shopping is one of his favourite reasons for travelling! Inconsistencies with Facial Recognition Trial called out by New Zealand's independent consumer watchdog. Key points for me are: - Foodstuff's refused requests for data and did not answer our questions - 1 in 175 chance of misidentification. 10 times higher than in Foodstuff's interpretation. - no ethnicity data was collected - Consumer NZ is concerned that FSNI may be exaggerating facial recognition’s impact in reducing instances of assault and abuse. - The Privacy Commissioner is now evaluating the results of FSNI’s trial of FRT. https://lnkd.in/gR5KWUYG

Two real examples of emails from Aussie retailers. Which one do you prefer? There's ongoing discussion about the use of images in emails to - show custom (non web-safe) fonts - bypass dark mode - make it easier to build campaigns BUT, seeing what your email will look like for a large portion of your subscribers (e.g. in Outlook), wouldn't you prefer for recipients to see important parts of your email's content over beautifully designed images and custom fonts? A balance of image and live text ratio is key. What that balance looks like is as much as a personal preference as it is dictated by brand guidelines and other factors. For clients who are hesitant to move away from image-only campaigns, I suggest things like announcement bars at the top of an email (see free shipping example), text CTAs and live text footer elements to start, then go from there.
