Would you call me crazy for quitting my permanent job for a 2-week contract? Although this was daunting, I saw this as an exciting opportunity for myself and my career. There’s a common idea that contracting is a risky career move. However, taking this leap led me to a 3-month extension and now my permanent position with Troocoo for more than a year and a half. Here are some of the benefits I have experienced and seen in contract work: 💼Exposure to new skills – everyone has a different way of doing things, learn something new! Along with different skills and perspectives, you can pick up new system knowledge, which in turn can open you up to further opportunities. 💼Higher pay – generally, as a contractor you get paid at a higher rate, whether you use this for holidays or a small break between contracts, sounds like a win to me! 💼Flexible commitment – You’ve started a new role, and your contract is for 6 months, currently there are discussions about transitioning your role to be permanent. You don’t feel that this role/business is suited to you long term. You have every right to decline that offer and move on, plus, you’re making an informed decision because you’ve worked with them for 6 months already. 💼Professional and personal relationships – being a contractor means you’re always being introduced to new people, you’ll likely find yourself a new friend and build your professional relationships, which can be great in the long run. If you’ve done a good job in your contract, you’ll likely hear from them again if they need more support. Contracting is an exciting way to get back into the workforce or if you’re someone who likes variety and appreciates learning and development it will likely suit you too. I have no idea where I would be today if things had gone differently but I’m glad I’m here, sometimes you have to take that leap. I like to think of myself as a vocational matchmaker. Judging by the smiles in this picture, this was a match made in heaven! This post, from Michaela, an exceptionally talented candidate I connected to an exciting role 3 months ago, perfectly encapsulates why I love working in temporary recruitment in the Charity sector. I regularly hear how influential a seemingly short-term assignment can be to the life of the employee and to the organisation who has ‘borrowed’ their skills for a while. Whilst in other sectors it might be common, with #charity jobs it’s incredibly rare that a candidate is purely doing a temp role to get a bit of cash! There is that feeling of making a difference and highlighting an important cause to people who might be able to help. Plus, you could meet a group of like-minded passionate individuals from another State, who it’s likely you’d never have met otherwise. I’ve worked with candidates whose temp assignment completely changed their career trajectory, some of those are now leaders in their field. So, if you are toying with the idea of trying #temporaryjobs for the first time, let’s have a conversation. Scared of speaking to a recruiter? 😱 Ok, I get it. Certain recruiters have given the industry a bad name. There are some really bad practices out there. Here are a few examples; 1. Recruiters sending your CV, without your consent to clients, and in some cases just to companies who are not their clients, just trying to get a hit - This is such a bad practice, it does you, and their client no favours and more often does not lead to a placement. 2. Hounding you and been too pushy. At the end of the day this is your life and your career so this has to be done at your speed and when you are ready. 3. Blowing smoke There is no need to inflate things to a candidate and promise them something you can't deliver. Recruiters need to be clear and upfront with candidates even if that means you will not get a placement. It is just a waste of time for everyone involved if not. 4. Not having suitable roles Why approach a candidate you don't have a role for just to get new people on your books and waste their time with a call. 5. Not been flexible with their time. Listen we know everyone is busy. Recruiters need to realise this isn't a 9-5 job. They need to be flexible and realise not every candidate can speak to you when you want them to. Winning the APSCo Best Performance Awards, is no small feat. It signifies their excellence in performance and operational prowess & extends beyond mere accolades; it represents a commitment to best practices, continuous improvement, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in a highly competitive industry. Currently 114 Australian & NZ staffing and recruitment firms participate in our Benchmark initiative, which provides a platform for unbiased performance comparisons. By uploading their P&L each month these firms showcase their dedication to transparency and accountability. This initiative has cultivated a benchmark standard that not only benefits the participating firms but also uplifts the industry as a whole. To be considered for the Best Performance Awards, each firm submitted their Management Accounts for FY24. The evaluation process was objective, comprehensive and fair. Submissions were meticulously compared and ranked within the appropriate Sector Peer Groups, forming a robust FY24 Judging Scorecard. This scorecard evaluated critical metrics, including Temp/contract Sales Volume, GP (Gross Profit) as a percentage of sales, and profits per team member. Each metric provided insight into the operational efficiency and profitability of the participating firms, highlighting their strengths and areas for potential growth.
