Hadean Energy is trialling its electrolyser technology at a CSIRO testing facility, which could produce #greenhydrogen using up to 30 per cent less #electricity than conventional #electrolysers. The tubular solid oxide electrolysis technology can also be used to efficiently produce #syngas for #efuels. Its simple tubular design and proprietary catalyst is expected to lower #manufacturing and #maintenance costs.  Hadean Energy CEO, Chris Rowland, said #testing has proceeded smoothly, with great support from the CSIRO staff. “Successful completion of our #trial will help us progress to commercial scale electrolyser production and make a vital contribution to #decarbonising hard-to-abate industries." The long-term durability and performance of Hadean Energy’s electrolyser module is being tested over several months at CSIRO’s Hydrogen Technology Demonstration Facility (HTDF), which provides the #infrastructure for #hydrogen technologies to be tested and demonstrated by innovators in industry and research. CSIRO Hydrogen Industry Mission Deputy Leader, Karen Kozielski, said the facility is particularly useful for #researchers moving their #technology from benchtop scale to pilot and commercially relevant scale, when #safety is very important. “The HTDF also gives innovators a secure and trusted place to show people their technology in action," Ms Kozielski said.

Improving LCOE of PV-driven hydrogen via reciprocating engines ◾ A group of scientists at the University of New South Wales in Australia has investigated the technical and economic feasibility of relying on hydrogen-fueled reciprocating engines for using PV-powered hydrogen in both gas-to-power and power-to-gas operations. ◾ The proposed solution was conceived to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of hydrogen generation powered by large-scale PV. ◾ In the study “Evaluating the techno-economic feasibility of hydrogen-fuelled reciprocating engines for renewable base-load power generation,” published in Energy Conversion and Management, the research group said the system includes a 180 MW large scale PV facility, a 93 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, a 4 MW compressor, and a 29-ton pressurized hydrogen storage unit for power-to-gas conversion, as well as a 10 MW hydrogen-fuelled reciprocating generator based on hydrogen-diesel dual direct-injection (H2DDI) technology for gas-to-power operation. ◾ The power-to-gas storage unit operates with the surplus power provided by the solar farm, while the gas-to-power unit is used to convert the stored hydrogen into electricity when there is limited availability of electricity in the market. ◾ “The produced hydrogen can either be sold to the market and blended into the existing natural gas pipeline or stored for later use when power generation from the PV is insufficient, such as during night time or adverse weather conditions,” the scientists explained. ◾ The researchers specified that diesel is used as both an ignition source and an additional energy source, with the H2DDI technology being able to gauge variable proportions of hydrogen and diesel to produce power based on available fuel reserves. They also explained that a rise in the hydrogen energy fraction was found to result in a higher LCOE. ◾ The techno-economic analysis showed that the proposed system configuration has the potential to achieve an LCOE of $335.52/MWh and minimal CO2 emissions of 78 kg/MWh. For comparison, the current average LCOE of New South Wales is half of this value. The system was also found to enhance sustained grid supply by increasing diesel consumption without a substantial increase in the LCOE. ◾ Despite these initial findings reveal the proposed technology has a long way to go before reaching commercial maturity, the research team is convinced that the adaptability of the system will make it compete with alternative technological approaches. The Smart Energy Council and Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia are pleased to provide a submission for the Low Carbon Liquid Fuels (LCLF) consultation paper to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts. The AHC is supportive of the CSIRO’s Hydrogen Electrolyser Manufacturing Report that predicts Australia’s hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing (HEM) sector could generate $1.7 billion in revenue and create nearly 4000 jobs by 2050. The informative report also identified significant potential for growth in electrolyser installation services, with projections of an additional $1.2 billion in revenue and 1,000 jobs by 2050.   Despite challenges currently faced by electrolyser manufacturers globally, CSIRO sees big opportunities for local companies to establish electrolyser manufacturing and assembly sectors. The AHC will be working across its membership (including electrolyser manufacturers Fortescue, Hysata, Accelera by Cummins, LONGi Hydrogen, Siemens Energy, SolydEra Group, Nel Hydrogen, Envision Energy, Plug Power, Akula Tech and Toyota Motor Corporation), with industry and government stakeholders to find implementable long term solutions to maximise local Australian benefits.   The Australian Government ’s Future Made in Australia package will need to be stacked with localised support from state and territory governments at a minimum, if Australia is to beat the global competition (many of which have a headstart on us) and reach the ambitious levels of CSIRO’s modelling.   Hysata’s Chief of Engineering Officer, Scott Abrahamson’s recent article in Manufacturers'​ Monthly closed with a quote that sums it up perfectly - “We hope today’s progress will lead to a legacy for us all to be proud of when the world looks back at the transition to net zero.”   Link to the CSIRO report here: https://lnkd.in/g7YfXD4X #H2Au

Amp Energy plans green hydrogen and ammonia production Amp Energy has finalised commercial agreements for the development of the Cape Hardy Advanced Fuels Precinct incorporating electrolysers to produce green hydrogen, as well as green ammonia and other advanced fuels. The agreements were executed with Iron Road which is developing the Cape Hardy Industrial Port Precinct on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia into a green products manufacturing and export area. The area is to be supported by a desalination plant for the region being studied by the federal and state governments and copper miners BHP and Oz Minerals which will underpin massive expansions of industry. Now Amp Energy will purchase a 630-hectare parcel of land at Cape Hardy for $15.5 million for the project and has finalised a royalty structure and common user infrastructure agreement with Iron Road. AVESS Energy is delighted to commence a feasibility study under the Government of Western Australia's Carbon Innovation Grants Program (CIGP) following the signing of a funding agreement with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DEWR). The study will seek to validate our 50kW/250kWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) prototype for mine site application, providing an opportunity to understand and enhance our VFB's temperature resilience and suitability for WA’s harsh environment. The Company will now look to finalise its demonstration agreement with WA vanadium developer Atlantic Vanadium Pty Ltd to demonstrate our prototype at Atlantic’s world-class Windimurra Vanadium Project. New hydrogen micro-credential courses developed by Deakin University and Engineering Education Australia (EEA) will provide critical skills to help reach Australia's net zero and clean energy targets. The program, which features four micro-credential courses and one webinar, will focus on upskilling workers across industries including energy, transport and government, to propel Australia's hydrogen economy. The partnership between Deakin University and EEA was formed in 2022 following research from Deakin's hydrogen technology hub Hycel into the development and strengthening of a prosperous hydrogen workforce. The Australian Government has released a #blueprint to guide the #production, use and #export of #hydrogen to position Australia as a global hydrogen leader. The State, Territory and Federal governments worked together and with industry to finalise the #NationalHydrogenStrategy. It identifies four objectives, supported by 34 actions and associated enablers to underpin delivery of Australia’s #hydrogenindustry at scale. Central to this delivery is the green #HydrogenProductionTaxIncentive program and the expanded green #HydrogenHeadstart program, which the Australian Government is funding through an estimated $8 billion allocation made in the 2024–25 #FederalBudget as part of its #FutureMadeinAustralia initiative. In addition to the release of the National Hydrogen Strategy, Researchers at UNSW Sydney have released the first report on the feasibility of a #collaboration between Australia and Germany on hydrogen and #greenmetals. The report forms part of the Australian Government’s Green Metals for Sustainable Steel from Australia and Germany (#SuSteelAG) initiative, and aims to explore the potential of creating a sustainable #greeniron and steel #valuechain between the two countries.  UNSW is leading the SuSteelAG project, and its first report suggests there is a genuine opportunity for #partnership between Australia and Germany in the future of #industrialdecarbonisation. Hydrovoltaic generation using seawater might be a good baseload component for the electricity generation mix here in Aotearoa, accelerating transition. Purely speculatively, I also wonder whether it could be used to improve the economics of effluent treatment (using fluids other than seawater in that case).

Fortescue is currently constructing a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser manufacturing facility in Gladstone, Queensland, marking a major step forward in Australia's hydrogen industry. The facility, part of Fortescue's larger Green Energy Manufacturing Centre, will produce over 2 gigawatts of PEM electrolyser stacks annually, enough to generate more than 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. This project is key to Australia's green hydrogen ambitions, and the federal government has supported Fortescue with AU$44 million through the Modern Manufacturing Initiative, alongside Queensland's infrastructure contributions like road networks, power supply, and land allocation. Fortescue’s leadership, headed by Executive Chairman Dr. Andrew Forrest, has emphasized the importance of both manufacturing electrolysers locally and continuously advancing hydrogen technologies. Powering Australia's South Australian team visited the exciting Tonsley Innovation District for a tour of Hydrogen Park South Australia (HyP SA). They were joined by Powering Skills Organisation’s Peter Adams Anthea Middleton and John G Kelly AM.   HyP SA uses a 1.25 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser to produce hydrogen from water and electricity from the grid when renewable energy is abundant. Drawing on the lessons learned from this initial demonstration, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) have commenced construction on a 10 MW electrolyser at HyP Murray Valley in NSW, with a 60 MW electrolyser planned for HyP Adelaide to come.   As an emerging industry, this leadership demonstrates what is possible and enables offtake by hard-to-abate sectors looking to decarbonise. Critically, it also allows development of the skills required for our future hydrogen workforce. The Cathode Precursor Production Pilot Plant (C4P), coming out of the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre C4P Project, has received a 12-month funding extension, announced by Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael MLA, ensuring the continued development of Australia’s battery industry in Western Australia.
