🚀 New blog - Australian Red Cross Lifeblood collects over 1.6 million blood donations a year, helping to deliver life-saving outcomes across Australia. Lifeblood worked with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Quantum Solutions Lab to explore how advanced computing techniques, including quantum computing, could help optimize nurse scheduling and lower the cost of collecting blood donations. This blog explores both a state-of-the-art classical optimization method based on constraint programming, and a proof of concept quantum computing solution on QuEra Computing Inc.'s Aquila QPU. Lifeblood was able to achieve a theoretical reduction of 7% in costs, or a reduction of 44% in the cost per blood donation when demand was doubled, demonstrating a promising direction future applications of quantum computing. There was a huge announcement at the AWS Summit in Sydney. Our team took the journey over to Sydney to get insight into what is to come for AWS. It's no surprise that AI was a hot topic, it has been a hot topic around the world for some time now. AWS announced its release of Amazon Bedrock, AWS GenAI service, to the Sydney region. This brings the technology closer to Australia and New Zealand end users. We are excited to start bringing the offering into our services at Easycoder and giving businesses across New Zealand and Australia the power of AI to grow their businesses (securely). “Unprecedented” Google Cloud event wipes out customer account and its backups UniSuper, a $135 billion pension account, details its cloud compute nightmare. "A joint statement from UniSuper CEO Peter Chun, and Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian." This statement reads, "Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian has confirmed that the disruption arose from an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper’s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription. This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’ that has never before occurred with any of Google Cloud’s clients globally. This should not have happened. Google Cloud has identified the events that led to this disruption and taken measures to ensure this does not happen again." This one has blown up a little, and I'm really excited about it. Amazon Web Services (AWS) CloudShell IN A VPC!!! (Yes, all caps!) OK, I know some of you are saying, "Woah. Slow down. What's CloudShell? Why is this a big deal?" So, let me start from the beginning. What's AWS CloudShell? It's a Linux-based environment launched from your AWS Console browser with a heap of pre-installed tools. Since you launch it from the AWS Console, it runs with whatever permissions you're logged in with. I presented on CloudShell at the November AWS User Group (Melbourne) meetup. You can check it out at: https://lnkd.in/g6V5-Uqp What's so good about this update? It's a major leap forward. One of the key missing pieces of CloudShell, the ability to easily connect to your instances, has been addressed. Why is this important? Doesn't Session Manager allow this? It does, but the SSM agent isn't automatically installed on RHEL-based EC2 instances. So, you need some way to SSH into the instance first. There are some constraints: - A maximum of two VPC CloudShell environments per IAM principal. - A maximum of five security groups per VPC CloudShell environment. - The upload and download option is not available in the Actions menu. The new VPC CloudShell environment just sits as a tab next to the non-VPC CloudShell environment, so you can have both.
