Sprout Venture Associate Crispin Dye shares insights from the Venture Taranaki Trust event 'Mooving on Methane'. One of the key speakers opening the event this morning was Margaret Stuart, Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at Nestlé Oceania. Nestle has committed to Net Zero by 2050, and a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. Nestle is increasingly focused on reducing Scope 3 emissions, emissions within their value chain that they don't directly control. The key message: there are no silver bullets. Different environments require different solutions. And with 27 countries that Nestle sources ingredients from there needs to be a variety of solutions to on-farm emissions. Thank you AFGC AusFoodGrocery for organising a great sustainability summit last week. Close to 100 FMCG leaders including Unilever and Reckitt shared their stories and perspectives. Together with Andrea Culligan and Paul Dobson, we covered the topic of #Climate Reporting. Here are our take-aways ** A strong starting position – it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the upcoming reporting requirements and trying to find your way through the various frameworks and measurement tools can be daunting. But as high as the mountain to climb might look, we invite you to look back and see how far sustainability has come. The Food and Grocery sector, more than any sector, is well underway with mature sustainability strategies. Australia’s adoption levels of climate smart practices, especially on farm – are high and well recognised. We have much to be proud of. ** Data challenge – data access, accuracy and management is by far the biggest challenge. Our sustainability reporting landscape is fragmented, inefficient and lacks coordination. Data is reported multiple times, in different formats, to different actors. This is particularly challenging for small to medium-sized businesses and farmers who carry a disproportionate burden. Solutions need to be designed on a system level. We have the opportunity as a sector, as a country, to design a national framework and verification method that brings efficiency and credibility. In the meantime, we encourage FMCG to support their upstream suppliers with data collection in the form of tools and field support. There are many international examples to take inspiration from. ** Multi-disciplinary teams - 60% of organisations are unsure of the resource requirement needed to meet their new reporting obligations, and those that do expect resources to double. Understanding the configuration of how to use multi-disciplinary teams to collect and use data meaningfully will be a huge benefit for businesses as part of the climate reporting mandates. No one size fits all, however, embracing the use of current risk, governance and controls mechanisms vs starting from scratch is where CFOs should start. There is much to gain. As unprepared as many of you feel (50% in the latest polling), you have embraced this as an opportunity. An opportunity to gain trust, consumer loyalty, and strengthen the position with retailers. A catalyst for change and transformation. Biosecurity: The top priority on KPMG’s Agribusiness Agenda launched at Fieldays   Members of the Biosecurity Business Pledge recognise the role of biosecurity in underpinning New Zealand’s economy, environment and way of life. They know the importance of working together to ensure more effective biosecurity risk management and mitigations to lower the costs and impacts to New Zealand as a whole. The total economic costs of biosecurity to the New Zealand primary sector have been estimated to be approximately $6 billion dollars when considering both production losses and defensive expenditures. I wasn’t expecting to get caught up in Fonterra so soon, but the price action today just grabbed my attention. The Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund had a good day with a 7% rally when news of the global consumer business exit emerged, which shouldn’t be too surprising given the long-running concerns about the return on capital for the high-value consumer businesses. But what caught my eye today was just how much the cooperative shares jumped today in trading among the farmer shareholders – up 15% or so in late afternoon trading. Jarden’s analyst note speculating on a $2-per-share capital return from a successful sale probably did them some favours, given the co-op shares started the trading day at about $2.52 a share. The gap between the cooperative shares and the fund units has been pretty stark since Fonterra tied up the fund rather than give it the dignified death it probably needed and the capital restructuring sapped the need for farmers to be fully-shared up to supply the co-op. I reckon that narrowing of the price gap on hefty volumes for the co-op gives a pretty clear steer on where its owners see the value accruing. Preliminary results from the 2024 Agribusiness HR Review reveal that Agribusiness organisations are having to make additional adjustments to employee salaries throughout the year. Agribusiness organisations in Australia typically review and adjust employee pay once a year, as part of an annual company-wide remuneration review. However, insights from Rimfire’s annual survey on Agribusiness workforce practices highlight that more than half of employers are having to rely on out-of-cycle pay increases to retain key staff. Rising inflation and the cost of living have been significant considerations for Australian workers over the past 18 months, and salary increases have followed suit. Knowledge of the employment market and competitor behaviour is critical to making decisions around remuneration. The Agribusiness HR Review provides businesses with robust industry data on salary budgets, incentives and workforce practices. While governance might not be as sexy as marketing, in my experience it's pretty fundamental to a business or industry association moving forward. You can get away with being bit loose if you are small and can carry risk management and compliance in your head - but wouldn't you rather have the brain space to embrace opportunity?
