This question arises after Brad Banducci , retiring CEO of Woolworths Supermarkets was threatened with contempt charges for failing to comply with a court order to publish corrective advertisements regarding misleading product claims. Having worked across a handful of large Australian retailers, I've seen firsthand how similar their challenges can be, often just different stages of tackling the same issues. Recently, I've been connecting with smaller retailers and it's striking to hear almost identical themes and concerns. From $4m to $60 million in 3 years I was part of a digital team that grew online retailer My Pet Warehouse from a tiny acorn to a mighty oak, in the competitive Australian pet market. This is how we did it. We had a visionary CEO Philip Bartholomew he knew that; ✓ Having the biggest and best range would ensure repeat customers and a high AOV - (in retail, if you can’t get the big brands on board, should you even start?) ↳ Our buyer Luke was the best in the business ✓ Strategically positioning your warehouses across Australia (Perth, Melbourne, Sydney & QLD) would ensure the quickest delivery times ✓ Hiring the best and letting them get on with it ✓ Understanding that seasonality for pet supplies is everything by rigidly sticking to a content and promotions calendar for all channels ✓ We grew our social audiences by competitions, expert Q & As ✓ PPC: My CEO Philip told me, “Stephen, you can grow the Google Ads account limitlessly, once you obtain a non branded ROAS of 525%”. Bing Ads also accounted for $100,000 per year in sales at a better ROAS than Google ✓ Email was huge - aggressive targets on new subscribers + investment into the best enterprise email segmentation software + adhering to seasonal trends from content calendar ✓ Asking brands we stocked for a marketing budget. *Attention marketing managers*: if you’re promoting other brands, make them pay for it. ✓ SEO: A 3 year phased aggressive strategy that started with; ↳ SEO audit by yours truly before I even arrived in the door that mapped out short, medium and long term initiatives; ↳↳ Short term: Intensive Backlink clean up from mess of previous agency ↳↳ Medium term:  Addressing category and product SEO optimisation with copywriter (over 50,000 products) ↳↳ Long term: Develop and maintain a content calendar that tapped into the many experts we had to choose from, because we were selling their products. When our CEO then invested in a PR campaign that saw him on the biggest news channels / publications in Australia, such as SKY NEWS, that’s when all of our web pages elevated up further up the rankings ✓ Working alongside and developing a close relationship with Andy Danks, our web developer made SEO changes that were needed quickly. Times are tough for most retail brands, here in Australia. I respect @radicalyes and their founder Kerryn Moscicki and her Director of Marketing so much...you know why? They have a motto. It goes like this "Always keep the lights on". Hence why the team and I are still running fairly intensive Google Ads, Meta Ads, and Email Marketing campaigns pushing their latest drop. As their Virtual CMO, I am also supporting their advertising on the back of buses. I mean, radical, right? Love this brand, love this shot, love that it's on a bus! This is an incredible breakdown by Carla Penn-Kahn from Profit Peak. People often talk about the lack of talent in market in certain specialism's, however what I've observed as lacking more is the ability of break things down in the way that Carla has done below. Most businesses use revenue as a pretty significant yard stick for performance in their businesses. This helps not only the focus on the commercial team but the business can build a reward / commission model to help incentivise the achievement of revenue targets. Often tactics are used to help stimulate more revenue, what is regularly overlooked is how that tactic cascades through the business. What impact outside of driving revenue does the tactic have, does it involve discounts, freebies, additional work - all of this adds up. Hold onto your shopping carts 🛒 🛑 In a landmark move, the ACCC has charged Coles Group and Woolworths Supermarkets with misleading price claims, a huge development for anyone involved in retail or consumer advocacy. 🎯 What's the Issue? The allegations centre on deceptive practices where prices were purportedly hiked just before advertising significant discounts. This practice, while not new, undermines consumer trust and distorts the true value offered to shoppers. 🛒 Why Does It Matter? This case highlights a critical issue in retail ethics and compliance, especially for what is essentially a duopoly with the power to influence market pricing and consumer perception significantly. The ACCC's actions underscore the necessity for transparency and fairness in pricing. 💡 Looking Ahead: As retailers, we must understand that pricing isn't arbitrary. We must ensure they not only comply with law but also foster consumer trust and loyalty. The erosion of trust hurts the entire sector - this should be a call to action for all of us in the industry to prioritise ethical practices and transparency. There are some incredible technology solutions coming out of Australia to support retailers at the moment, and I take my hat off to the teams powering some of the biggest Australian brands and solving the ever-increasing challenges in the retail landscape. They are the unsung heroes, the late-night hustlers, and all-round smart humans doing one thing and one thing only: solving retailers' clunky, complex, and archaic ways of working. So, here's to those unsung heroes of retail, the silent weapons, the guys and girls who don't get awards yet exist purely to supercharge your brands growth. And best yet? They are all locally grown. 🎁 Giftnote is simplifying and personalizing the gifting experience for consumers and brands. Today sees the launch of the Australian & New Zealand eCommerce Report 2024, from the IAB Australia and Pureprofile. The report is based on research conducted with 1,000 Australian & 1,000 New Zealand online shoppers during July 2024, examining the consumer attitudes, behaviours and influences driving ecommerce. This is the fourth annual Ecommerce Report for the Australian market and the first year a survey amongst New Zealand online shoppers has been conducted. 🔥 Hot off the press: Coles & Woolworths Q1'25 sales results. Over the last two days, both major retailers reported their first quarter results. 🟢 Woolworths Group sales grew +4.5% vs YA to $18.0B, underpinned by strong performance of Australian Food (+3.8% vs YA), continuously strong performance of Australian B2B (+6.9% vs YA; PFD is going from strength to strength, amazing acquisition that so far pays big time for Woolworths), and recently acquired Petstock (was not part of the reporting last year, but grew ~5.0% vs YA; now sitting in the newly created "W Living" business pillar). eCommerce continues to be one the main growth drivers, approaching $2B in quarterly sales, growing +23.6% vs YA, and now representing almost 15% of the overall Supermarket sales. Very impressive. 🔴 Coles Group sales grew +2.9% vs YA to $10.55B, underpinned by a decent performance of the Supermarkets division (+3.5% vs YA), while Liquor sales flat YoY, and sales from the partnership with Viva Energy are down -11.2% vs YA. Similar to Woolworths, Coles eCommerce sales continue to drive growth for the retailer, for the first time exceeding $1B in sales per quarter, growing +22.4% vs YA, and approaching 11% share of the overall Supermarket sales. Very impressive, too, but the gap between Coles and Woolworths eCommerce sales and share continues to widen, which is why Coles needs to make its partnership with Ocado work asap if they want to catch the Australian grocery eCommerce leader anytime soon.
