Great move by the Commonwealth. Moving from a data mindset to a claim/proofing one using attestation moves us to Zero Knowledge Proofs #ZKP. ISO 18013 and 23220 allows these attestation and claims to be shared in a secure way both online and off-line. This has security benefits but also starts changing our mindsets on eligibility. October 2024 Edition of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Magazine. #Cybersecurity ranks as the number-one concern for businesses, followed by financial, legal and regulatory risks, a new report has found. In partnership with YouGov, McGrathNicol surveyed more than 300 C-suite executives and board directors across Australian businesses with 50 or more employees. Cyber risk was a top-five concern for 2024 for 68 per cent of organisations, the highest of any risk category. The report found 71 per cent of organisations don't conduct due diligence on their key suppliers' cybersecurity practices, and over 75 per cent don't require mandatory reporting of cyber or data breaches affecting their suppliers. While 87 per cent of surveyed organisations were confident their business has a comprehensive insider risk management program in place, less than a third have implemented fundamental insider risk controls. Only 28 per cent use a risk-based vetting and due diligence framework for employees and suppliers or contractors, while only 27 per cent have education/awareness programs in place, and just 18 per cent have appointed an authority accountable for insider risk. The State of Cloud Security Platforms and DevSecOps: A new survey by Cisco and Enterprise Strategy Group reveals the true contours of cloud native application development and security

On 21 June, at the Data and Digital Ministers Meeting (DDMM) All States and Territories agreed to use ISO/IEC 18013 and 23220 for #Digital #Credentials requiring cross border #interoperability, starting with the mobile Driver's Licence #mDL. Why is this significant? If you blink, you'd miss the significance. It means for the first time in Australia, digital credentials are guaranteed secure and privacy preserving acceptance across any border. All of this without requiring jurisdictions to centralise customer data and systems. This enables new ways of delivering national programs without the costly expense of centralising Privately Identifying Information (PII). An ISO anchored Verifiable Credential #VC is also significant. A VC under W3C doesn't alone guarantee end to end secure interoperability across platforms and vendors. There are many flavours/derivatives of blockchains and contract based ledgers and ways to wrap messaging protocols. What the ISO does is remove those ambiguities and anchors it in a consistent trust approach. These two things, if embraced, are game changers for not only how different tiers of government can now cost effectively deliver national programs, but these standards also allow industry and businesses to participate like never before. Lastly, and probably most importantly, if we can embrace the capabilities of this standard to digitally sign, authenticate and prove who you are, from both a phone or a smart card (as these standards also support physical cards) - then we have barely scratched the opportunities that this enables for people. The 2025 Gartner CIO and Technology Executive Survey gathered data from 3,186 respondents, including 109 from ANZ across the public, private and non-profit sectors. New Zealand shifted closer towards digital credentials for access to online services this week with the launch of the Trust Framework Authority. It will determine which organisations are verified to provide digital identity services. The digital ID scheme aims to ease transactions such as opening a bank account or accessing government services by moving identity verification away from physical documents. This has the potential to transform New Zealand’s digital economy, and Minister for Digitising Government Hon Judith Collins KC MP has already suggested she wants to expand the government’s use of AI, including in health and education. But both the launch of the authority and the push to expand AI are significant developments that need to be considered in the wider context of the principles on which our digital economy runs. Recently, the NZ Police declined to provide data on arrest rates, stating that the information, previously shared with external groups, was "not robust and should not have been provided." While it is commendable that the Police are focused on data quality, this situation highlights a critical issue. When an organisation acknowledges that its critical data is not robust, it raises a fundamental question: How reliable is the data used internally to plan and manage operations? If the data is not fit for external release, can it be relied upon to guide decision-making processes? This situation underscores the importance of data integrity, not just for transparency but for the effective functioning of any organisation. Agencies must ensure the data driving their operations is as robust as possible. Otherwise, they risk undermining the strategies designed to protect and serve the public. I have seen many organisations pour huge investments into managing their data. Still, they miss the fact that data quality only improves when it's actively used, not hidden away. Too often, data is used to produce fancy statistics and flashy charts that look good but never get used, turning valuable insights into data showboating. It's a wake-up call for all Government agencies. Before dismissing data as 'not robust enough' for external use, consider what that says about its suitability for internal use and, ultimately, your organisational effectiveness. Getting there ... #digitalID legislation is good ✅ and now terrific to see some funding for trials of #digitalwallets and #verifiablecredentials as part of the Australian Government Digital Identity System (AGDIS). Identity is great but only half the story. We need an end-to-end and secure system. It is pointless to be able to prove who you are digitally if you still have to produce/copy/send paper documents and certificates.
