To be a more persuasive communicator, copy the three features in the opening lines of this recent press release.* Firstly, it hits its key message in the first line: "New data shows inflation has now almost halved since the Albanese Labor Government came to office". ➡️ Whether you're speaking or writing an email, know your key message and state it clearly as early as possible. Then, it acknowledges where its audience is right now. Rather than ignoring what's on their minds, it recognises it by saying, inflation's "still too high". ➡️ Understand your audience and what they're thinking. Don't ignore the negative; acknowledge it. Thirdly, it moves from the past and present towards the future by outlining the focus of next month's budget: "easing cost of living pressures". ➡️ Be positive by looking towards the future and action. Counter the negative with concrete steps you'll take to improve the situation. How could you use one of these practices to make your communication better today? *I know this is a political release. Is it "Continuous Professional Development" or "Continuous Manipulation and Control" of your Mainstream Industry? Please be responsible for your personal education. Do not limit your education to your profession/ industry. Learn about your Aboriginal Community from your Aboriginal Community. Never rely on Mainstream Media or your Profession/ Industry to educate you about Aboriginal Affairs in this country.

#EssentialCriteria for #AboriginalAdvisoryGroups 1. Each member must be part of a location based Aboriginal Community that Must be represented by the Advisory Group (Must is determined based on impact of decision making by the Advisory Group). A Regional Representation seems to be the standard in WA. Representation is Essential for any Aboriginal Advisory Group. 2. Each member is recognised as having the #RightToSpeak for their respective Aboriginal Communities. Eg. A member is recognised as a Member of a location based Aboriginal Community such as the Kimberley or Midwest regions in terms of WA and can therefore represent that region. If you are lucky, you will seek to appoint or nominate Aboriginal People that have the #RightToSpeak at a #Professional level (that is lived experiences in a specific Mainstream area such as Health or Justice as opposed to being a member of a location based Aboriginal Community) in terms of the objectives of the Aboriginal Advisory Group. 3. Each member is financially supported to actively engage with the region or Aboriginal Community that they can speak for. 4. Each member is Obligated to actively engage with the region that they represent. Preference will be that the member lives in the region that they represent. Lived experiences in specific regional areas is important criteria relevant to Aboriginal Advisory Groups. Another lucky number for today - 4.

Things need to change now, how many more examples of this broken system do we need before, real change happens? As Chair of KWILS, I echo Siobhan Mackay's statement that services in Katherine need more government support, long-term secure funding, and whole-system reform.

RNs are the occupation with biggest gap between advertisements and applications according to Seek analysis reported in the AFR last Friday. I don't think this is a perfect measure of skill-shortages. Presumably it still suffers from not knowing the number of actual vacancies per ad. And I'd really rather old-fashioned measures like vacancy rates, time to fill, and suitable applicants per position. But it seems like a useful data point that can be easily derived from the available data. The problem of RN shortages has been obvious since the early days of the pandemic. There was some hope that the problem would be alleviated with the wind down of PCR testing and vaccine programs. But this clearly hasn't happened. Aged care demand is ultimately only a small part of overall demand for RNs so I don't have much confidence that the situation will ease once the aged care staffing targets are implemented. And I know nursing isn't the only area where there are shortages. Taking action to resolve supply bottlenecks in the health workforce may be the one of the most cost-effective health interventions available to governments. It's unfortunate that we aren't seeing more policy action in this space. #agedcare #nursing #health

#Closing the Gaps related to #Business White Australians have had access to Business Opportunities since the beginning of Colonisation. For Aboriginal Peoples, some may have started in the 1990s or 2000s where I'm from in the #Pilbara. My step Dad had his own carpentry and fencing business and my Uncle had a plumbing business. Uncle Gavs business is still going strong - Ben Thorn. Shout out to my Uncle and family operating that business - #AllRoundPlumbing These are the only two businesses I saw growing up that were connected to my family. My step Dad back then (i was aged 8- 12 years old) was non-Aboriginal. He owned an Old House in Roebourne next door to the library - my favourite place as a kid was next door to my home at the time. The Old House is an Art Centre/ Gallery now called Yinjaa Barni. Some of the most highly acclaimed Artists in Australia come from my home town and specifically that Art Centre. ******** Aboriginal Peoples impacted the most by colonisation (South West) in WA are the ones that are taking MOST of the Businesses Opportunities in #RegionalWA. To address this, the IPP should include, - a percentage for Traditional Owners Only - I suggest 51% given that's the percentage Government or Mining recognises as an "Aboriginal Business" - majority owned. - business support including business set up and ongoing support My view is that an Aboriginal Business is a 100% Aboriginal owned, managed, and led business. None of this 25% crap and 50% crap. 50% means Half Aboriginal- Half NON-ABORIGINAL. How does the non-Aboriginal business owner feel about his/her business being #classed / #defined by Government and Mining as #Aboriginal. I support 50/50 JVs between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Australians that come from the same region. e.g. Pilbara region or Midwest region.

Meeting with the CEO of an Aboriginal organisation, is not Aboriginal Engagement unless that CEO is a member of the Aboriginal Community. If you want to consult and engage with Aboriginal organisations, consult and engage with the members not staff. Meetings with CEOs only is a box ticking exercise.

These include: - Australian Government's GrantConnect - State Government grant databases - Local Council and regional initiative websites - Funder websites, newsletters and social media - Subscription-based services (e.g. The Grants Hub, GEMS, The Funding Centre, GrantGuru). If some #MainstreamIndustries are defining #AboriginalBusinesses as being those that are 50 < % Aboriginal owned, does that mean 50 or more percent must be owned by an Aboriginal person? Or can that include 1,000 Aboriginal people that own 25% and 1 Aboriginal person that owns 25%? If so, how do we make sure the public are aware of who the Aboriginal people are that are benefiting from the Aboriginal Business financially. That's transparency.

You don't need to pay to find Government Grant information - both State and Federal governments have websites and databases where you can search for suitable grant programs, and identify those that might be a good fit for your business or organisation.

Institute of Community Directors Australia gave an excellent overview of the Not-for-Profit Sector Development blueprint today. I particularly enjoyed the way Adele Stowe-Lindner brought some of the recommendations to life. Like when 60% of NFPs report not having enough in their funding to cover operating costs, that means we're all doing applications and acquittals (and often some of the project too) for free - which needs to change, with governments and funders agreeing to pay what it takes. And how changes to Deductible Gift Recipient status to broaden and simplify it might mean that we can tidy up some frustrating anomalies like how 'preventing social harm' is not eligible for DGR but 'responding to social harm' is. Like the need to protect the rights of NFPs to advocate for what people and the planet need most, without having their funding taken off them. If an NFP is funded to support the health and wellbeing of refugees, they should absolutely have the right to advocate for changes to how refugees are treated more broadly. And how NFPs need to upskill digitally to take advantage of what computers can do, and avoid some of the harms. I loved Adele's analogy of how a computer is less like a typewriter and more like an extra staff member - just like a staff member, we have to make sure they're adding value, be understanding that they'll sometimes get things wrong, and ensure that they're not sharing gossip at the watercooler (releasing data they shouldn't). The Allan Labor Government has issued a new cost escalation guide for public infrastructure projects as dozens school upgrades, office refurbishments, rectification works and public transport upgrades suffer cost blowouts. Whether it’s building the North East Link or delivering a minor office refurb, Labor cannot manage projects and Victorians are paying the price. Financial mismanagement has consequences. A decade of waste and cost blowouts under Labor has driven Victoria’s debt to a record high which is now starving funding from frontline health, education, infrastructure and community safety services. Under the Allan Labor Government, cost blowouts on projects big, small and everything in between have become the norm and every dollar wasted is one less for desperately needed frontline services across the state. This new blowout guide is an admission that Labor cannot manage money and has lost control of delivery of projects of all sizes.
