What do you do if you want to shift from a traditional career to a creative one?
There are different ways to shift from a traditional career to a creative one. It is a deeply personal journey, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Some people take a leap of faith and do it in one bold, clean jump while others make that transition through a series of stages. I belong to the latter group. I started by reducing my traditional career to a part-time job instead of a full-time one. This was a strategic first step which enabled me to experiment with different opportunities while still maintaining a certain degree of stability and financial security. For me this meant a smoother, less stressful transition with the luxury of being able to figure out my skill gaps and evolve my skillset and confidence at my own pace.

“The intrapreneurialism mentoring program guided participants step-by-step, through the process of intrapreneurialism. It’s not just a skill or behaviour that they learn but also a process. The outcomes for the business were fantastic. We had projects ranging from launching an app to help our sales teams be more effective, to improving efficiencies and reducing costs in many of our processes, and simple things like enhancing team culture and productivity. The estimated value of the work delivered by the program participants was calculated to be over $1,000,000.”

The program adopted a multi-modal, multi-channel approach to leadership capacity development which makes it easier for busy professionals to engage with the content at times that are suitable to them. This approach has the added benefit of giving participants (who are all extremely busy leaders) time to process and apply key concepts and take a reflective approach to driving change – both personal and professional.
The program had three distinct phases focusing on firstly self-leadership, secondly team leadership and finally innovation leadership. Each stage of the journey had its specific deliverables with the program culminating in a White Paper and a presentation delivered by each of the leaders to their peers and team members, exec leadership team of QE2 and invited guests from Metro South Region.
Many of the innovation projects lent themselves to being further scaled up and adopted across the hospital for application beyond the managers' immediate area.
"The world we live in is rapidly changing and good leaders need to be aware of such changes and be open to continuous change and development of themselves and their teams. This program provides valuable insight into how leaders can do this. Dr. Irena is a wealth of knowledge!" P. Brown. Nurse Unit Manager QE2 Hospital.
"I have done many leadership courses – but this one was exceptional. I really enjoyed how it was facilitated and rolled out combining a variety of modalities. It gave me the opportunity to implement an innovation that I have wanted to for a couple of years but never seemed to find the time. Dr. Irena is a highly experienced facilitator and made herself available to support us at all times which we appreciated. I would recommend this program as a new and fresh way to develop leadership qualities and capabilities." A. Kopp. Nurse Unit Manager QE2 Hospital. -

“The leadership team of QLD State Archives worked with Dr. Irena to operationalise our transformation agenda. This has been hugely beneficial for changing the way we think about our specific problems and their solutions. Participants were able to do pre-reading, and pre-work according to their own schedule. For QSA, the ‘flipped classroom’ method of learning the theory beforehand meant that when the group did come together, discussion focussed on how we could apply the theory to ourselves and our transformation agenda. While obviously beneficial for time-poor people, the flipped learning approach also allowed QSA to achieve results with business improvement initiatives in a relatively short period of time. The process demonstrates how innovative thinking and creative problem-solving skills can be learned, or enhanced, using a structured approach which works. I would happily recommend Dr Irena Yashin-Shaw to any public sector organisation wanting to improve their capacity for innovation and creative problem solving.”

Innovation is a critical foundation for high performing organisations. This program involved mentoring leaders to produce, vibrant organisations and teams that serve at the highest levels by engaging their people and unlocking their creative potential.
“Leading in a complex and constantly changing environment brings exciting ongoing challenges. This Program has provided very contemporary insights and skills to enable me to see where innovation is critical in this new world, and how we can be responsive and adaptable. The program has opened a creative thinking process which has flicked a switch on how I see, and use, innovation. Prior to the program I didn’t really know how to use the creativity we all have, to engage in a different way with our teams, and help energise us towards clever & smart workforces. I can highly recommend Dr Irena’s program, she is certainly dynamic and very tuned into the needs of the individuals in our program, I found there were many times where the light bulb came on when Irena pushed us to think critically about where we were personally and where our teams are at!”

1. Innovation is everyone’s responsibility.
2. We need an entrepreneurial mind-set, attitude and approach.
3. Being adaptable, agile and creative is essential for all organisations (both public sector and private sector) to maintain legitimacy and relevance.
4. ‘Business as usual’ is not sustainable. We need to be prepared to sunset out-dated models, processes, infrastructure, technologies and do things differently.
5. Our levels of effectiveness tomorrow depend on our capacity to innovate today.
6. Innovation can happen without a big budget.
7. Innovation involves some calculated risk-taking and experimentation but it can be carefully and responsibility managed.
8. Fail small fail fast and use effective and continuous feedback loops help to refine innovations quickly.
9. We need both evolutionary (continuous improvement) and revolutionary (break-through) innovation.
10. Innovation will happen more easily if it is embedded into the DNA of the agency and not treated as an ad-hoc add-on.
“Throughout the program Dr. Irena unpacked a toolkit of effective methodologies and processes that leaders can use when complex problems need to be solved. One key message for me was that there is a role for everyone when it comes to organisational innovation. Great stuff Dr. Irena!."

How to embed processes and systems that promote innovation
The key leadership behaviours that promote innovation
New models of leadership for engaging people in innovation
How other public sector leaders are meeting the challenges of innovation

Dr Yashin-Shaw delivered a program that consisted of a variety of components which included webinars, on-line tools and resources and a series of relevant tasks and projects to build momentum for change across the organisation. The quality of Dr Yashin-Shaw’s work was exceptional. She is an engaging facilitator who ensured that everyone contributed to the issues identified. She has extensive knowledge and understanding of leadership and innovation and how to create an environment within an organisation for innovation to thrive. Not only did the participants find the workshops informative, they also found them fun. There were immediate benefits for the QCT from Dr Yashin-Shaw’s work. The benefits included enhanced communication and relationships across the organisation with much greater willingness of staff to contribute ideas and participate in making change happen; thinking differently about the challenges facing the QCT; increased confidence of staff in calculated risk taking and an increased capacity of staff to use different tools and process to develop options for innovative solutions. Processes were put in place to ensure the longevity of the outcomes and that the momentum is sustained. Participants of the workshops enjoyed Dr Yashin-Shaw’s warm personality and her willingness to ensure their needs were met.”
