I spent 5hrs putting together a list of Aussie IT Companies. Revenue generating < $1M with decision makers' details. Why?   I want to connect with small IT companies based in Australia. I want to provide them best IT project outsourcing service. So I pored over Sales Navigator and a few tools to scrap all data of IT companies with their decision makers' LinkedIn profiles. In principle it's great that governments provide data analysis to increase transparency and help citizens with decision making. But I have a bad feeling about the new NSW Rent Check tool. (I have no doubt about good intentions.) For a property, the tool provides a "median rent range", and in one example that range is >15% between 'low median' and 'high median' (whatever that means). Supposedly renters can check if they're being overcharged, but statistically many properties should be above the median, so it's not very actionable. Many land lords, on the other hand, are below one of the medians and will see the 'high median' as the new minimum for their next rental increase. (It would not surprise me if one day the Tax Office would go after them for not charging enough based on this.) The Rent Check tool will update its "median rent range" upwards: chain reaction. Fortunately market forces still apply, so there's a limit in practice. There's been a lot of talk about a housing crisis: does this throw oil on the fire? I can't fault transparency, but would it be more responsible to give more targeted insights from the data, e.g. what percentile your rent is currently in? #data #housing https://lnkd.in/gydu64NM

This is a natural fit partnership between two great products with two quite odd exceptions… First one being that Xero has an existing competitor to Deputy in Planday, which they acquired for up to $284 million in 2021. They are cannablising a market of their own product revenue by bringing in an external minority owned product. The second quite odd thing is they will be marketing two products to Xero customers. Xero Deputy in Australia/New Zealand (possibly more in the future) while offering Planday to all other countries. Australia requirements are very different to most other countries and Deputy is the leader in that space, so that will be a better offering. Planday have as of September 2023 released functionality specifically for the Australian market but that will be now canned. I’m sure there is logic to the partnership, (above my head) but it seems like something else might be in store here, perhaps a precursor to an acquisition of Deputy or a write down of the Planday investment. As a small competitor in the space with TimeKeeper, I find it fascinating and curious to see how it plays out. #xero #deputy #saas #partnerships

I'm a big fan of what Paul Stovell has created. I was fortunate to be in the audience at Something Tech. for this live podcast with Paul and Rohit Bhargava. Paul offers a no BS discussion on how he has built Octopus Deploy but he also talks about the craft of software development and the mindset of developers (demonstrated in the exert below). Leaning into understanding developers and what motivates them to do great work is something I am big a proponent of. If you want to grow and foster great software creation, including process, authenticity and ultimately shipping your product to market in time and within budget then get to know your developers and what drives and motivates them. Another thing that Paul and I agree on is small/ lean development teams- more developers does not equal better and faster software delivery.
