Not good for continued investment…. Australia's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports will drop this year, continuing a trend from last year after reaching a record high in 2022. That’s the projection of analysts at BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, in a report sent to Rigzone recently. The country’s LNG exports are estimated to fall to 3.425 trillion cubic feet (97 billion cubic meters) in 2024 after reaching a record high of 3.567 trillion cubic feet (101 billion cubic meters) in 2022, the analysts stated. #lng #oilandgas

Almost all of Australia’s natural gas is exported, creating an artificial local gas scarcity and extremely high gas and electricity prices on the East Coast, where there is no domestic reservation. The boom in LNG exports, which reflects Australia’s rising terms of trade, has resulted in large profits for foreign-owned oil and gas companies. However, Australia’s tax receipts from this boom have been lacklustre. Now compare us to Norway, which taxes its oil and gas sector at almost 80%. Norway’s tax receipts from the oil and gas sector have climbed in parallel with its export income. Norway has put its oil and gas bonanza in the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, which is valued at almost US$290,000 per Norwegian person. Norway’s oil and gas wealth has made Norwegians the world’s richest people, a distinction that Australia could have earned if we had properly taxed our resources. Instead, we did the reverse, taxing our resources lightly. We then increased the country’s population rapidly through immigration, diluting our mineral resources.

Hadean Energy is trialling its electrolyser technology at a CSIRO testing facility, which could produce #greenhydrogen using up to 30 per cent less #electricity than conventional #electrolysers. The tubular solid oxide electrolysis technology can also be used to efficiently produce #syngas for #efuels. Its simple tubular design and proprietary catalyst is expected to lower #manufacturing and #maintenance costs.  Hadean Energy CEO, Chris Rowland, said #testing has proceeded smoothly, with great support from the CSIRO staff. “Successful completion of our #trial will help us progress to commercial scale electrolyser production and make a vital contribution to #decarbonising hard-to-abate industries." The long-term durability and performance of Hadean Energy’s electrolyser module is being tested over several months at CSIRO’s Hydrogen Technology Demonstration Facility (HTDF), which provides the #infrastructure for #hydrogen technologies to be tested and demonstrated by innovators in industry and research. CSIRO Hydrogen Industry Mission Deputy Leader, Karen Kozielski, said the facility is particularly useful for #researchers moving their #technology from benchtop scale to pilot and commercially relevant scale, when #safety is very important. “The HTDF also gives innovators a secure and trusted place to show people their technology in action," Ms Kozielski said.

Victoria's new undersea gas storage project is a response to an increasing need for gas supply security. Despite being one of the world's largest exporters of natural gas, Australia faces a dilemma; its domestic gas supply is under pressure, particularly in the southeastern states like Victoria. This is partly because much of the gas produced in Australia is earmarked for export, leaving domestic markets vulnerable to shortages, especially during winter when demand peaks.   The new storage facility will help manage this by storing surplus gas when demand is low and releasing it during periods of high consumption. While Australia doesn’t import gas, local supply issues stem from the focus on exports to lucrative overseas markets. This has created a situation where even though Australia produces ample gas, the domestic market can experience scarcity.   The Victorian government's decision to enhance gas storage capacity aims to mitigate these risks by ensuring more reliable access to gas during critical periods, helping to stabilize the market and protect against potential supply shocks in the future. Low wind power generation amid an east coast cold snap is threatening to create a gas shortfall, exposing the effect of years of restrictions on new supply and jeopardising the Coalition’s ambitions to transition to nuclear power. The Australian Energy Market Operator says the threat of gas supplies running short extends from NSW to Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT and could last until September. Yesterday evening wholesale electricity prices exceeded $4,000/MWh. Electric Kiwi had the good sense to advise their customers that supply was tight and curtailing their usage a good idea, only to be publically admonished by the grid operator saying there was no supply issue. Then how did prices get that high? Ironically earlier in the day we’ve had the Minister of Resources/Associate Minister of Energy on breakfast TV stating “electricity generators, do not see this as an opportunity to gouge and profiteer in the wholesale market”. So which is it, the grid operator is wrong and can’t identify a tight supply scenario, or do we have clear and irrefutable evidence of said price gouging?
