Little did I know I was coming down with something, and so all the warm, reassuring things I meant to say at the start of my talk about if I, as an arts and communications grad, a former maths-despiser, and UX-type, could get my head around commercial concepts, then so can you… Well, that part just fell out of my head. What’s left are some (I think) pretty useful tools and concepts for product people who want to try to lift their financial awareness. Doing a landscape review of the content approach on some digital agency websites and loving the Ira Aotearoa website. A few things stood out in this fairly crowded market: The approach to te reo Māori throughout the website (the mobile nav interaction is great). Beautiful! The animation in the headings, which capture the facts and the essence behind everything Ira do (stories, culture, community, strategy) 👏 👏 👏 to whoever designed the interaction and wrote the copy. Those images 😍 love the way they tell the story of what's important to Ira as well as the awesome mahi they evidently do for their clients. The copy - mīharo! It is so good to see a website clearly show what an agency cares about and values in their people and their work - whilst also sounding like real humans. Check it out if you're looking for some inspiration - or just to enjoy a website experience done beautifully well.

As a self-confessed Mark Ritson fanbois (yes, yes, I know he swears quite a bit - get over it!), I loved this article from earlier this year relating to pre-testing ads. It just makes sense. It is also btw, what we do at UserTesting. User Research is not just limited to the domain of UX Researchers or Designers. For Marketers, why wouldn't you want to pre-test before you spend huge amounts on creative copy. The difference is that you can get results back from your target audience in hours, not counted in weeks or even months. Hours. And you save soooooo much $$$. You dont have to follow the feedback, but you do need to listen to it. Its a no-brainer. So why do so many CMO's not bother??? There are loads of valid reasons to get along to a Software Development meetup in Brisbane. I’ve taken the liberty of compelling a list of some of my favourites for anyone who has never been to one and isn’t sure what they’d find: 1. There are plenty of new things to learn at Meetups, and loads of old things you forgot about. Being part of the conversation is a good time either way. 2. Meets ups are a place for everyone; Seasoned Veterans, Students, Emerging 10Xers, Social Butterflies, Wallflowers, Sticky Beaks and anyone else with any interest. 3. Where else will you find 30 other people who speak your (programming) language, in one well lit place, with food and drink provided, between the hours of 5:30-8pm, for free. 4. The first time I have ever heard someone singing a song as part of their speech at a Product Management Conference! About metrics. With a backing track. What a very different approach, and fun presentation from Joe Raeburn that also hit us with some powerful messages at Product Aotearoa Day 2. Building successful products and businesses are all about keeping an eye on the money when you're looking for product market it. Find a very popular (and profitable niche) and then find that extra need that is not being met by the people using the products here. Balance Fresh with Familiar. Too much Fresh just scares people - they need something familiar to ease the transition. But at the end of the day fundamentals - metrics, money, customer segments, needs and PMF - are applicable in every product, service or offering you can imagine!

'Experimentation doesn't get easier - it gets faster' This week I was lucky to attend the inaugural APAC Experimentation Summit hosted by Gavin Bryant to learn from industry leaders in the growth and experimentation space - what a great afternoon it was! It was fantastic to hear from experts at REA Group, Atlassian and Air New Zealand on the challenges teams and organisations face when embracing a product experimentation framework. From hashing and randomization to centralised platforms and leveraging GenAI, the depth of discussions was remarkable. The 'hero's journey' keynote from Lukas Vermeer on the overblown concerns of interaction effects was particularly surprising and fascinating. Interactions between two experiments running simultaneously can muddy the waters and complicate results, but with proper design and analysis, their impact is much rarer than I had thought!  Running concurrent experiments is a simple way to increase experimentation velocity, looking forward to diving into this in a practical way at Xero.
