Recognising the pressing need to support the mental wellbeing of aged care nurses, Altaira, through our partnership with Healthcare Heartbeat, have provided support for new nurses participating in the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (SA Branch) Aged Care Transition Professional Program, which launched during April 2024. This initiative equipped nearly three dozen Nurses entering the aged care workforce with the tools and strategies necessary to safeguard their mental health amidst the challenges of their profession. This weekend's International Nurses Day theme ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care’  aims to reshape perceptions, demonstrating how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits. The BD Challenges that YOU face It is not easy BD you if your role means that you need to consistently bring in new clients. Yesterday, I delivered a live webinar to nearly 1000 BD hungry recruiters of various different levels. The Webinar was on pitching and I am pretty sure that I left my cohorts with some good stuff to be getting on with. The problem is that delivering world class pitches is just one thing that you need to do. There is also a myriad of other stuff that you need to be good at including objection handling, digital outreach, call openers and prospect identification. In aged care, we've traditionally measured success through qualifications, experience, and procedural adherence. However, a growing focus on emotional care has placed empathy at the forefront of what makes a great hire. While measuring empathy may seem abstract, there are concrete ways to incorporate it into the recruitment process to ensure you're hiring individuals who are not only skilled but also emotionally intelligent and compassionate. How to quantify empathy – Begin by integrating behavioural and situational interview questions that prompt candidates to reflect on emotionally charged situations. For example, ask, "Tell us about a time when you had to care for someone who was distressed or upset. How did you manage the situation, and what was the outcome?" This reveals how naturally a candidate responds to emotional cues and whether they approach care with compassion. Once hired, empathy should be tracked through resident feedback surveys, team morale assessments, and even metrics like staff absenteeism and burnout rates. When empathetic care is present, residents feel more content, and staff experience lower levels of stress. Implementing empathy-based recruitment ensures a team that not only meets the physical demands of care but also excels in emotional support, enhancing the quality of life for residents.
