🔥 Hot off the press: Coles & Woolworths Q1'25 sales results. Over the last two days, both major retailers reported their first quarter results. 🟢 Woolworths Group sales grew +4.5% vs YA to $18.0B, underpinned by strong performance of Australian Food (+3.8% vs YA), continuously strong performance of Australian B2B (+6.9% vs YA; PFD is going from strength to strength, amazing acquisition that so far pays big time for Woolworths), and recently acquired Petstock (was not part of the reporting last year, but grew ~5.0% vs YA; now sitting in the newly created "W Living" business pillar). eCommerce continues to be one the main growth drivers, approaching $2B in quarterly sales, growing +23.6% vs YA, and now representing almost 15% of the overall Supermarket sales. Very impressive. 🔴 Coles Group sales grew +2.9% vs YA to $10.55B, underpinned by a decent performance of the Supermarkets division (+3.5% vs YA), while Liquor sales flat YoY, and sales from the partnership with Viva Energy are down -11.2% vs YA. Similar to Woolworths, Coles eCommerce sales continue to drive growth for the retailer, for the first time exceeding $1B in sales per quarter, growing +22.4% vs YA, and approaching 11% share of the overall Supermarket sales. Very impressive, too, but the gap between Coles and Woolworths eCommerce sales and share continues to widen, which is why Coles needs to make its partnership with Ocado work asap if they want to catch the Australian grocery eCommerce leader anytime soon. Wellspring, a brand that offers gummy supplements, has recently apologised over its recent ‘Gil Tulog’ outdoor advertising campaign following order from Makati City Mayor Abby Binay to take down the ads–after being called out by the public for the insensitivity of the campaign. Peregrine Corporation, one of Australia’s top 500 privately-owned companies, is selling three premium freehold convenience retail outlets in South Australia which are expected to generate more than $23 million, according to Burgess Rawson. Exclusively listed with Burgess Rawson’s Jamie Perlinger and Raoul Holderhead, the properties present an exciting opportunity for investors to acquire high-performing assets in prime locations. Peregrine Corporation CFO Michael Dodd said the timing is right to list the assets, which have strong long-term leases in place, making them highly appealing to investors. The pending sales will enable the company to recycle its capital into other avenues. “South Australia’s commercial real estate sector is performing well, with the removal of stamp duty playing a key role in its demand,” he said. Distrust replaces trust for Coles and Woolworths – and it’s just the beginning for their brands. Coles is among Australia's most distrusted brands, while rival Woolworths has taken a major slide down the rankings of the country's most trusted brands, according to new survey data collected by Roy Morgan. It's not just a little slide in brand trust. It's a disaster. Coles has plummeted 221 places from its December 2023 ranking as Australia’s 5th most trusted brand to become Australia’s 9th most distrusted brand (12-month rolling average to March 2024), according to Roy Morgan. "The news for Woolworths, while less dramatic, is still significant. It has dropped 32 places from its December 2023 ranking as Australia’s 2nd most trusted brand to become the nation’s 34th most trusted brand in March." Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said: "We have been tracking trust and distrust of brands in Australia for more than seven years, but we have never seen a reputational crash as dramatic as Coles and Woolworths – not even Qantas." Worse that Qantas? That's saying something. "A failure to sympathise with the public concern over the rising cost of living, coupled with the unveiling of large revenue and profit announcements in February, saw public trust in the major supermarkets' brands tank worse than Qantas, Optus or Medibank," said Levine. Survey respondents also mentioned “price gouging / tricky pricing” and a “focus on profits ahead of customers" by Coles and Woolworths. And let's not forget the recent Senate inquiry into supermarket pricing and the less-than-empathetic interviews by supermarket CEOs on ABC Four Corners (who can forget the trainwreck interview walk-out by Woolworths CEO Brad Branducci?).
