Why relying on a single big offshore vendor for all digital needs is a bad idea. $135bn UniSuper fund had it’s total Google Cloud data - including Google’s backup - deleted by Google itself: “UniSuper had duplication in two geographies as a protection against outages and loss. However, when the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription occurred, it caused deletion across both of these geographies." Every cloud service keeps full backups, which you would presume are meant for worst-case scenarios. Imagine some hacker takes over your server or the building your data is inside of collapses, or something like that. But no, the actual worst-case scenario is "Google deletes your account," which means all those backups are gone, too. Google Cloud is supposed to have safeguards that don't allow account deletion, but none of them worked apparently, and the only option was a restore from a separate cloud provider (shoutout to the hero at UniSuper who chose a multi-cloud solution).”

In recent years, vulnerable legacy enterprise networks have migrated to full cloud solutions to improve security, scalability, and functionality. However, this shift has often come at the cost of data sovereignty and data lifecycle ownership. I am confident that, eventually, we will need to consider a mix of data sovereignty solutions and offshore computer processing. A likely return to edge computing, which emphasises local data storage and enhanced protection, is on the horizon. I look forward to helping our customers diversify their computing storage and processing capabilities by shifting from cloud computing to edge computing. Let’s see how this plays out!

But there really are a lot of benefits, including lower costs and higher efficiency. For developers, serverless also releases them from those routine and menial tasks associated with app scaling and server provisioning, giving IT teams more time to consider strategies or apply other solutions! UniSuper outage was an unprecedented event happened in Google Cloud per the joint statement. Even a recovery site was in place, both prod and DR were accidentally deleted. Luckily UniSuper has backup data in a separate cloud provider for a DR (and rebuild) purpose. It gives an important note about the “offsite backup”. In the on premise world, we do separate DR site with an alternate location (or event vendor), and do data backup with a separate storage medium (aka Tape) as the last resort of backup. When we moved to cloud, we have to think about the necessity to store data into a separate environment (even more it is a separate cloud provider), or even multi cloud providers to maintain the resiliency and avoid possibility of single point of failure. Yes #cybersecurity is important, but we should also think the fundamentals of #resiliency , #disasterrecovery . There’s no absolute answer on the context above, it really depends on the business criticality , technology adoption , and after all the cost effectiveness.

Sounds like an internal primary or secondary index 'skew' between different systems (or just a bug). Can happen when restoring records to a database in live use when changing a schema, as the precise order that sets the foreign key mappings used by the other system will not match... This might even be a stale cache somewhere.. Hence why you should always use synthetic keys when maintaining a relationship between two distinct databases, never use internal primary or secondary keys, just asking for trouble... #databreach #australia #databases #integrity

Having IT or Dev teams operating in silos presents significant challenges. A lack of a centralised operating model can lead to inefficiency and confusion across teams. Siloed teams can be resistant to adopting good practices, hindering scalability and growth. I had a great chat with Kirk Penn of Service Management Specialists in Sydney Australia. We talked about how his team addressed these issues; through definition of a clear set of services and educating the teams on a centralised approach. Implementing automation for common tasks, reduces duplication of effort and improves efficiency. I'll link to the full episode in the comments. #cloud #firney #ai #generativeai

Google Cloud issues led to the deletion of infrastructure in multiple regions of the Australian fund UniSuper, which has $125 billion under management. UniSuper had two different data centers, and, as I understand, they decided to cancel one of them. They had two different subscriptions/accounts there. The issue with Google Cloud was that it deleted both of them. The scale of the issue led to a joint statement from UniSuper CEO Peter Chun and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. Luckily, UniSuper had backups and Azure. What's even more important, at such scales, the infrastructure is not actually deleted; it's marked as deleted, and only after some time does the actual deletion occur. Google is now working on recovering UniSuper's services.

This is a great example of how integral business reliability is. For over 620,000 UniSuper members, a mistake in setting up a Google Cloud account catapulted a nerve-racking ordeal, where their entire retirement fund and savings were inaccessible and inaccurate. Restoring databases, accounts, apps, and virtual machines took significant time and effort on behalf of both UniSuper and Google. I think this is a clear-cut example of how fragile digital systems really are. While we're awed by what we can do with a simple touch of a button, it's also just as easy to fall into chaos. Proactive, robust security measures and systems - as well as holistic verification strategies - all make a significant difference. #digitalecosystem #businessreliance #security
