  • For our Indigenous communities, taking control of data is not just about defence; it’s about opportunity. It’s about recognising the immense potential of digital knowledge systems to amplify voice, strengthen economies and foster innovation. With IDS, data isn’t just a record of what has been–it becomes a tool for shaping what’s ahead, allowing us to define narratives, build strategies, and thrive on our terms. Learn more about why Indigenous data sovereignty matters now more than ever in our latest blog:https://hubs.la/Q02_JbBr0 Are you worried that your organisation's cultural knowledge isn’t properly mapped and protected? • For Indigenous communities, data is far more than numbers on a spreadsheet or pieces of information stored in a database–it is a living connection to the stories, wisdom, and knowledge woven through generations. Embedded within this data are the narratives and traditions that form the foundation of cultural identity. Yet, without control over our data, we face a stark and urgent risk: the loss of ownership over our stories and the erosion of our sovereignty. This is more than a technical issue–it’s a cultural crisis. Without safeguards, the richness of Indigenous knowledge, its nuances, and its deep histories risk being diluted, misrepresented, or erased entirely. To learn more about the importance of Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS) and the risks of neglecting IDS, read out latest blog ‘Why Indigenous Data Sovereignty Matters Now More Than Ever’ here: https://hubs.la/Q02_yLwb0 #CommunityEmpowermentThroughData #DataGovernance #DataSovereigntyAustralia #DataSovereigntyServices #Winyama

  • Three months have flown by since our National IMW 2024! Recently, we caught up with Kate O'Connor, who is a Project Manager for Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) Aboriginal Economic Development team, about their support for this year’s event. Through the #FutureDroughtFund, DPIRD partnered with us to deliver geospatial training to support business and #drought resilience across regional Australia. Kate highlights the program's impact: "It's so valuable for people to get together and say, 'Hey, wait a minute, you're doing something similar to us' or, 'you're doing what we were doing three years ago - this is how we approached it'. That's where this program thrives. You create space for people to get together and learn from each other as well." You can read more from Kate here: https://hubs.la/Q02_2C3F0 Do you work for a Government department with a #ReconciliationActionPlan or strategic initiatives for your Indigenous community partners? • During the online ‘First Nations Data Sovereignty Forum’ in late 2023, Maggie Walter opened the session by defining Indigenous data as: “Any information or knowledge, in any format or medium, which is about, or may affect, Aboriginal peoples, collectively or individually.” Maggie further explained that much of the data currently collected about Indigenous peoples falls under that category of what she termed ‘BADDR data.’ BADDR data is a harmful approach to data that’s blameworthy, aggregate, decontextualised, deficit-focused and restricted. Here’s what that can look like in practice: Blameworthy: Data used to unfairly hold Indigenous communities responsible for issues like poor health outcomes, without acknowledging systemic barriers such as lack of access to healthcare or historical injustices. Aggregate: National statistics that group all Indigenous peoples together, masking the unique circumstances and strengths of individual Nations, regions, or communities. Decontextualised: Environmental data that focuses solely on resource extraction, ignoring cultural responsibilities to land and the spiritual significance of Country. Deficit-focused: Reports that highlight what Indigenous communities ‘lack’--rather than recognising cultural strengths, resilience, and innovation. Restricted: Data collected from Indigenous communities without proper consent, which is then locked away, inaccessible to the very people it concerns. Without Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS), these practices perpetuate cultural loss, disempower communities, and lead to decisions that fail to respect Indigenous knowledge and self-determination. At Winyama, we are driving change by advocating for community-led, ethical data practices that honour Indigenous perspectives, protect cultural knowledge, and support sustainable futures. • Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS) is more than a concept–it’s a critical safeguard against losing control over your data. Without it, our communities risk having their stories rewritten, their knowledge exploited, and their future shaped by others. IDS is the key to preserving culture, asserting self-determination, and ensuring data is used as a tool for empowerment, not exploitation. At Winyama, we understand the stakes. That’s why we’re dedicated to helping organisations and communities navigate IDS, building strategies that protect their data and secure a future where you remain the authors of your own stories.
