The State’s premier cultural organisation, housing WA’s scientific and cultural collection.

About us

The Western Australian Museum was established in 1891 (as the ‘Perth Museum’) and its initial collections were of geological, ethnological and biological specimens. Indeed, it can claim to be one of the oldest scientific institutions in the State. In 1959, its botanical collection was transferred to the new Herbarium and it continued to concentrate on earth sciences and zoology. The 1960s and 1970s saw the addition of responsibility for developing and maintaining the State’s anthropological, archaeological, maritime archaeological and social and cultural history collections. The Museum’s aim is to advocate knowledge about the collections and communicate it to the public through a variety of media, but particularly through a program of exhibitions and publications.

  • 🌱 The Aboriginal Bush Food & Medicine Garden at the Museum of the Goldfields has sprouted new life—literally! Over 70 native plants were recently added to the garden, thanks to a partnership between Major Partner GOLD FIELDS, the Western Australian Museum, and Foundation for the WA Museum. The garden preserves and shares Aboriginal knowledge of food, medicine and sustainability. New additions include the Desert Cassia, known for its healing properties, and the Jam Wattle, which has been used for food, pain relief and tools for thousands of years. As part of a three-year partnership, the Museum will expand educational programs to integrate Aboriginal knowledge with Western science through two-way initiatives. Exciting features like a fire pit, yarning circle, and interpretive signage are also on the way. As the garden grows, we look forward to welcoming visitors to explore! • We're thrilled to congratulate Blake Cooper, our Human Resources Manager, who was awarded the prestigious title of Human Resources Management Practitioner of the Year 2024 by the Institute of Public Administration Australia last week. Since joining in 2022, Blake has been instrumental in helping the WA Museum achieve industry-leading results in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment, leading the creation of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Register. He has also launched the WA Museum’s Learning Management System and Professional Development Framework. Blake’s achievement is a well-deserved recognition of not only the innovative programs and initiatives he has implemented but also his pragmatic and reasoned approach to HR management.

  • Archaeologists from the WA Museum's Maritime Heritage department have created the most detailed model ever published of the City of York shipwreck. The City of York was a 68-metre-long, three-masted iron-hulled ship built in 1869. During its final voyage from San Francisco, it was carrying a cargo of timber and doors when it struck a reef off the coast of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island during a storm on 12 July 1899. The WA Museum works with the Rottnest Island Authority and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to monitor and document underwater heritage sites in the Perth region. This includes creating 3D models to track long-term changes in shipwrecks like the City of York. You can view the model online, and if you’re up for an adventure, the wreck is open to divers as part of the Rottnest Island Shipwreck Trail.
