Our popular exhibition Sheiks, Fakes and Cameleers was recognised at the 2024 Western Australian Heritage Awards, receiving a commendation in the Interpretation Project category. The exhibition and supporting events unpacked the contribution of cameleers to Western Australia and their role in the founding of Perth Mosque, a state and local heritage listed place. More than 150 years ago, camels and the men who cared for them were a familiar sight along the tracks connecting Australia’s outback to its coastal colonies. Often referred to as the ‘Afghan cameleers’, this diverse community, their identities and nationalities were, at times, simplified into ‘fake’ stereotypes. Missed out on the in-person exhibition? A virtual tour is now available on the State Library's website. https://lnkd.in/gTBvQHft Thanks to the Heritage Council of Western Australia (HCWA) and everyone who visited the State Library to engage with the story of the cameleers.

The State Library proudly hosted the 2024 Best Australian Yarn award ceremony in a record-breaking year for entries. Big congratulations to Albany-based Sam Carmody, winner of the Regional Prize for his brooding entry, Flutter, and well done to everyone involved for championing the art of storytelling.
Congratulations to Albany writer Sam Carmody, winner of the $3,000 Regional Prize for 'Flutter' - a powerful story about a shark attack's impact on a relationship. Thank you to our partners for helping us discover voices from all corners of Australia. Special thanks to the State Library of Western Australia for supporting regional storytelling and hosting our awards night, and to State Librarian and CEO Catherine Clark for presenting this important prize.
