In 2022, following a decrease in the pipeline of surveying student enrolments, SACOME worked with industry to highlight the importance of surveying to the sector through our 'Resources. But Not As You Know It' campaign which ran from 2021 to 2023. The Surveyors Board of South Australia worked tirelessly to advocate for a course specialising in surveying. In 2024 Flinders University responded with a four-year double degree combining a Bachelor of Geospatial Information Systems and Bachelor of Surveying. This course enables graduates to qualify as registered surveyors in South Australia. This collaborative advocacy has resulted in a 70% increase (20 in 2024 and 34 in 2025) in first preference undergraduate enrolments in 2025 and is unprecedented for surveying in SA. Be part of the state’s economic growth by considering a career in surveying. It was terrific to have the opportunity to discuss the key issues for our sector. SACOME looks forward to working collaboratively with you and building on our strong engagement with the Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia. There is significant opportunity in South Australia which is reliant on strategic advocacy and productive relationships - both with government and industry. Welcome to SA and Congratulations on your appointment Paul Martyn.
One of my first meetings in Adelaide was with Rebecca Knol, CEO of the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy. Rebecca is a strong advocate for the sector and for SA and we discussed the wide range of ways SACOME and the Department for Energy & Mines collaborate. We are both committed to growing the sector and its contribution to SA’s economy. The partnership is strong and I look forward to extensive engagement with the Chamber on a wide range of new opportunities for the state. South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy CEO, Rebecca Knol was invited to present to the House of Representatives Select Committee on Nuclear Energy Inquiry into nuclear power generation in Australia. SA has been at the forefront of the national transition to renewable energy since the closure of the Northern Power Station in 2016. A transition that has resulted in the highest electricity prices in the country and a 72% penetration of renewables. Market intervention costs – barely a feature of the market before 2016 – have escalated over 200% in the last 5-10 years and now account for 30% of industrial power bills. A trend that will soon be apparent in other states embarking on the same renewable ambition. SACOME has had a longstanding position that all low emission technologies should be considered as part of the future energy mix to ensure rapid decarbonisation and energy reliability. Net Zero cannot be achieved with renewables alone. However, this outcome is dependent on removal of the federal prohibition. South Australia supplies 25% of the world’s uranium and is home to the world’s largest known single deposit pf uranium. Additionally, SA has 35 years of demonstrated capability to regulate, extract, transport and export uranium through one of the only approved ports in the nation. There is bipartisan support in South Australia for nuclear powered submarines, all of which will be equipped with small modular reactors. Six in every 10 South Australians support a discussion on nuclear energy. South Australia is well placed to introduce nuclear energy. Lifting the prohibition on nuclear energy will enable South Australia to continue to lead the nation in the energy transition. It is time to rethink nuclear. It was fantastic to meet some of the 2024 NExUS Summer School participants at the South Australian Exploration & Mining Conference on Friday. SACOME’s sponsorship of the National Exploration Undercover School (NExUS) assists in funding of this nationally important program. Recognised by resource companies as critical real world exposure for our next generation of geoscientists. Discussions with students highlighted again, that the connection into the resources sector is a result of inspiring conversations from others who work in, or have intersected with, this amazing industry. A truly inspiring group of young professionals. Administered through the University of Adelaide, this important program is dependent on financial support from Minerals Council of Australia, BHP, Fortescue, Teck Resources Limited, Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), AngloGold Ashanti, Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia, Dreadnought Resources Ltd, Fleet Space Technologies, and SACOME. Thank you to Rebecca Tomkinson, CEO The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia for the opportunity for SACOME member resource company representatives – Sarah Clarke, Andromeda Metals; Genéne Kleppe, Digital Twinning Australia; Wendy Roxbee, Vintage Energy Ltd; Harriet Schuyler, Iluka Resources; Bindi Gove, Amplitude Energy - to attend the 2024 National Mining Day at Santos Ltd's Moomba operation in the Cooper Basin. Hosted by Mrs Gina Reinhart the celebration recognises the importance of the resources sector to our national economy. Mrs Reinhart advocates for courageous leadership so it was fitting that the event was hosted at Moomba where the pioneering CCS project in partnership with Beach Energy Ltd is now collecting, injecting and storing CO2. Decarbonisation in action not rhetoric. A fantastic night with outstanding entertainer Guy Sebastian. Congratulations to the Alliance Airlines staff who safely transported everyone to and from site. #NationalMiningDay Gerhard Veldsman | Kevin Gallagher | Brett Woods | Tania Constable | Samantha McCulloch | Aleisha Banner | Gretchen Richards | Caroline Steemson | Julian Malnic | Catherine McAllister Franzi GAICD | Paul Heithersay | Matthew Canavan | Trevor Robertson | Matthew Doman

The 2024 Energy & Mining Premier’s Awards were an opportunity to celebrate teams, entrepreneurship, innovation, communities and the people who make these milestones a reality. The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP provided the opening address highlighting that the resources sector is the tip of the spear when it comes to economic growth. He noted that copper is a key commodity for decarbonisation and that South Australia’s uranium is helping other western democracies to decarbonise their economies. Further observing the importance of Santos Ltd & Beach Energy Ltd’s CCS Moomba project in our quest for Net Zero, the Awards night demonstrates the ingredients of a very healthy sector, and our industry’s continued pathway to prosperity.
