Beat your fears with this There is no shame in being nervous Scared even Its how toy respond to challenging situations that dictate your future success And right now many recruiters are facing difficulties not previously encountered. Cold sales. Business development. Engaging with clients IRL The phrase ‘Ten seconds of courage’ is not my own. No matter. It is the concept that’s important here. It sounds strange to evoke the word ‘courage’ to describe what is essentially a white-collar desk job like Recruitment. But you do need to be brave in this job. Often. One of the characteristics of a great recruiter is that they constantly stretch themselves to better manage the critical moments of truth in Recruitment, which involve influencing the outcomes for the greater good. And that often means saying ‘no’ to a client, giving bad news to a candidate, or confronting challenging interpersonal scenarios. And indeed, as your career evolves into management, you will face many situations where you need to tackle confrontation head-on. Be brave. Say what is challenging to say, but what needs to be said. And the tip is this. Do your planning, consider your strategy, and then, as the nerves and doubt surface, tell yourself that all you need is ‘Ten seconds of courage’ to start. I started in Recruitment, in retained executive search, mind you, when I was 21. Every person I met, client or candidate, was older, more imposing, and more experienced, than I. I had hardcore imposter syndrome for at least two years. I used this technique all the time, even though I did not have the phrase ‘Ten seconds of courage’, to give it a label. I remember sitting in my car, white-knuckled, outside a client meeting, with a big deal CEO, twice my age and infinitely more experienced, waiting to meet me. And I told myself the same message – be brave, just start. You might confront it often too. For example, selling exclusivity to a client on a job order might provoke stress and nerves for you. But once you believe in the benefits for the client, you have role-played the pitch, and you have predicted the objections that might come, you just need to tell yourself, ‘Ten seconds of courage’. And then you start. “Mr client, the way I can fill this job for you is…” And then you’re into it, and before you know it, you are through it! Ten seconds of courage. You need it, just to start.

Recruiters... Don’t ask, ‘Will AI and tech replace recruiters?‘ Ask, ‘What parts of the recruiter’s jobs will be better done by tech?’ And which parts of the process create better outcomes when handled with the human touch Then, relentlessly acquire and polish the skills that will keep you relevant. AI will not destroy recruitment. But it may take your job. The real value of a recruiter is selling…advising…consulting…listening... storytelling, insights… influencing. Creating outcomes. Not at the whim of algorithms. Great recruiters do not default to hiding behind digital. They have mastered the ‘craft’ of recruitment and are skilled at engaging, building trust and credibility and creating outcomes. Pretty soon, that will be the only part of the job that tech will not do! Savage Recruitment Academy

Recruitment agency leaders- MAKE THREE PHONE CALLS A DAY. …. to people not expecting to hear from you. Reach out. Connect. Ask questions about them/their concerns. Do this, and good things will happen. Promise. (This idea was stolen shamelessly from a post I saw from Chris Savage. But he is right, and it applies to recruitment. Not only leaders, BTW) Savage Recruitment Academy

*** Are you a poor listener? *** Like most recruiters, I am a willing talker. But communicating is listening, too, right? So, surely, ‘understanding’ is the foundation of it all? I am a poor listener. Or, rather, I was, but I have worked hard at improving because this weakness was holding me back. I still lapse often, to be honest. ‘Active listening’, then, is a crucial business skill. It is most definitely something a consultative recruiter excels at. How self-aware are you about your listening skills? Most of us have no idea. How did I actively improve? I worked on these things, and I know I have a long way to go. How about you? How do you stack up on these? Listen to understand, not to formulate an answer Stop interrupting (I am disgracefully guilty of this) Be more ‘present’ – to not allow my mind to wander and to focus and concentrate on the other person Stop assuming that I know what the other person is going to say (The more experienced you are, the more guilty of this you can become) Listen to the ‘whole person’; in other words, be attuned to body language, tone and other non-verbal signals Approach every conversation with a more open mind and more empathy. Be ‘slower to understand’ – to not jump in with a solution too fast, and think more before I talk Ask more and more thoughtful questions, so I really do understand. Deliver appropriate responses, showing I have understood, and encouraging more dialogue Not be defensive when I sense criticism or a different point of view. Even if you just want to take a commercial slant on things, the absolute truth is that selling is listening But generally, most of us need to worry far less about being right and far more about being right about what the other person thinks and feels. We must remind ourselves every morning that only by listening will we learn anything new. *** Nothing you say today will teach you anything.*** Reflect on that for a moment. When someone really listens to you, you feel respected. Validated. That is the beginning of a trust-based relationship, which is the foundation for the ability to consult. And when AI soaks up all the process work we currently do, listening, understanding, advising, and consulting is the only part of the job where you and I will have any value. Oh, but what great value that can be! Savage Recruitment Academy

*** The best business advice I have *** Plenty of high-flying, big-billing recruiters during the post-COVID jobs boom came to believe that they were outstanding superstars and beyond improvement. Right now, many recruiters (even some of the same ones!) are struggling with the job, losing confidence, and beginning to believe they are not suitable for this industry. Hold on! Step back! This is a short piece of advice, which is ironic because it took me 30 years to learn what I share here. It’s been a tough two years. You may be doubting yourself. Or, some of you are flying high (and there are a few), beginning to believe your own PR. It works for individuals but applies to organisations too. Read carefully, please. This will save you a world of pain. • When things are going well, when the results are good, when it seems you can do no wrong, be sure you don’t get taken in by your own bullshit. We are never as good as we think we are in moments of success. And be careful, too, not to surround yourself with yes-(wo)men, sycophants, and brown-nosing acolytes who feed you what you want to hear and seduce you into complacency and arrogance. For it’s just at that time that the biggest fall is imminent. Self-satisfaction is what stifles growth, innovation, risk, and hunger. • Equally, when everything goes wrong, every decision seems to backfire, and your dreams are crumbling, do not believe you have no talent just because, at that moment, others around you cannot recognise it. Before you write yourself off as a failure, as wrong, as mediocre, as ‘not up to it’, just check you have not surrounded yourself with deadbeats, dingbats, drop-kicks, and doomsayers, who bring you down and stunt your dreams. That’s it. Maintain perspective. On yourself. The attitude and mindset of a great recruiter is a key masterclass on Savage Recruitment Academy

my Recruitment career. (start, January 1980 LOL) As we enter a new wave of technological advancement, I reflect on the thousands (and I mean thousands) of people and posts who have predicted the end of agency Recruitment because of Technology. Every year. All year. Always wrong. The Internet, of course But particularly job boards and LinkedIn. All the pundits and “Tech Bros” were howling about the end of Recruitment. In fact, our industry never grew as fast as it did on the back of those two! Then, social media and the gig economy platforms would smash traditional recruiters. They have hardly made a dent and are yet to make a profit. Now, we read on LinkedIn daily, and I get a tech pitch every week, which includes the assertion that Recruitment is dead, and AI will disrupt everything. But why is this different? Why hasn’t Technology already disrupted recruitment? After all, shopping, shares, books, cinemas, Taxis, and many others have been. Why has agency recruitment never been ‘disrupted’? There are two substantial reasons, and most tech people, as incredibly smart as they are, don’t get it. Firstly, unlike shares, movie tickets, shoes, groceries and books, “Talent” is not an online commodity. Secondly, Recruitment is the only Industry where what you are selling can say “No”. Don’t get me wrong. It’s obviously clear that AI will completely reshape the recruitment process and adequately handled, I believe it will be for the better. It will take a lot of the drudgery and hack work away from recruiters, speed things up, and, if it is appropriately implemented, will give stakeholders a better experience (although I’m sceptical that most people will ensure that) The topic is close to my heart because I just delivered the keynote address at the EVOLVE! Summit in Europe, and I’ll repeat that one-hour session as a webinar next week. Everyone is welcome. The webinar is free. Sign up here https://lnkd.in/gTVh7bcM It is recorded and will be sent to you later if you cannot make it 'live' It's a crucial topic. Join us

The EVOLVE! Summit stress test! You might think that attending a Recruitment conference is a stress-free and relaxing way to spend the day. And that might be the case for many people. But not for me on this day! Like many, I wear a fitness watch that tracks my heartbeat. I was fascinated to review what happened to my heart over the day. The Evolve conference is an extraordinary mixture of speakers, fun, music, dancing, food, networking and sharing. As you would expect, my heartbeat is shallow during the sleeping hours. However, at 8:45, I presented the keynote opening address to 500 people in the Sono Centrum music arena. (See second picture) Many people assume that because I appear confident on stage, I get no nerves before doing presentations. But that’s not true. I am anxious to do well, hyped up, adrenaline-pumped, passionate, and I keep moving on the stage. "Delivering quality content with high energy" is the goal, and the heart notices the workload. You can see the heartbeat above 140 during the session, but it drops back when I finish, and I join the audience to watch other speakers. But my heart duties are not yet over. At 2 o’clock, I had another speaking session, which it appears I handled with less stress. However, you can still see the surging heartbeat at about 2.15 p.m. But why is the heart going into overdrive again at about 10 pm? You can blame it on the post-conference party, which included dancing to an outrageous Slovakian rock band and a DJ who danced on top of his turntable. Thank you, Michal Toman and Vladimír Klescht, for much fun and many calories burned (5,502) on a non-Gym Day.

6 Signs Your Client Disrespects You You call them ‘clients’ and think they see you as a business partner. But are they? Do they take you seriously? Treat you as a trusted advisor? What do they really think of you? Take this quick test and maybe… think again! Tick each statement that applies to you. You can apply this to a specific client or, more generally, across your client base. (Do one or the other) 1. They won’t meet you to provide a new job brief. Not even a VC or a phone call. There will be no discussion. It will be emailed, or maybe just a few lines in an email. 2. They give you jobs in competition with other Agencies. And you are not even first. 3. When you eventually arrange a meeting, IRL or via VC, they keep you waiting for ages or even stand you up altogether. 4. They don’t return your calls, emails, or texts, even though the job was ‘really urgent’. 5. They routinely don’t interview the candidates you present.
