Building Costs Rise, Complicating Housing Goals Residential construction costs across Australia rose by 1% in the September quarter, according to CoreLogic Australia’s Cordell Construction Cost Index (CCCI). The figures highlight the need to transform property delivery for a sustainable construction industry and to meet housing supply targets. Over the 12 months to September, costs climbed 3.2%, further pressuring the government’s 1.2 million new homes target. With a shortage of new dwelling approvals and a 26.6% gap between completed and needed homes, the outlook remains challenging. Builders continue to face profitability issues as material and labour costs soar—placing projects in jeopardy amid rising housing demand. Regardless of the building typology, the application of PT Blink's structural technology and Blink DMI methodology can yield significant time savings in most cases. In the case of this 5-storey hotel development, the Blink Backbone structure takes just 3 weeks to complete. No need for propping or formwork means that the integration of the non-structural elements can begin immediately following the pouring of concrete. Today's project is a 12-storey apartment building comprising 36 two bedroom units. The design features a two-level podium that occupies a mixture of retail and commercial spaces. Parking is offered at the basement and ground levels. Using Blink DMI to offsite-manufacture the structure and components and integrate them quickly, efficiently and with minimal waste onsite, we estimate a total project time saving of 30 weeks or 46%.
