On Wednesday morning, at prefabAUS founding member Modscape’s Melbourne facility, the Albanese and Allan Governments announced they are investing a combined $50 million to establish the Melbourne Polytechnic 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 – the first dedicated training facility in Australia focused exclusively on advanced construction courses. PrefabAUS assisted with the business case and sees the Centre of Excellence as a leader, aggregator and multiplier, and a focal point for industry collaboration. It will provide digital maturity assessments, industry extension information services, technology demonstration and prototyping, promotions, events, information sessions, industry and technology fore-sighting, and information on key emerging technologies and workforce skills. This initiative will benefit the community that is waiting for more high-quality housing stock, the incoming generations of construction industry professionals with native digital skills, the wider construction industry and our members in need of appropriately skilled workers. The Centre of Excellence will be a driving force for nationwide growth in skills development for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). Exciting news today that the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has released its Prefabricated, modular and offsite construction Handbook. The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is the standards writing body responsible for the National Construction Code (NCC), WaterMark and CodeMark Certification Schemes. In March 2024, the Building Ministers acknowledged the significant potential of MMC to help address Australia’s housing supply shortfall. The handbook has been developed to increase the understanding and effectiveness of existing building standards and regulations at the direction of Ministers and to respond to government and industry requests for guidance on achieving NCC compliance in buildings that use MMC. It answers questions about determining evidence to support compliance and common NCC compliance risk areas. Congratulations to the ABCB and Building 4.0 CRC for their work on producing the Handbook.
