Birribee Housing proudly launched its Aboriginal Specialist Homelessness Service for Western Sydney this week at Kimberwalli. Funded by Homes NSW, and co-designed with the Aboriginal community of Western Sydney, the program is offering a drop-in service at our Parramatta and Bidwill sites along with an outreach service. Led by Birribee's Homelessness Lead Monique Wiseman and her carefully selected team operations began following NAIDOC week with many clients already being supported through the program.

Birribee staff are gathering this week to review and develop our plans for 2024-25. Thanks to Kimberwalli for hosting us.

Birribee Housing's CEO Paul Coe was pleased to participate in the Housing and Homelessness Forum in Western Sydney last week. He pointed to the need for sustained maintenance programs to ensure people living in social housing (including Land Council homes) were afforded dignity. He suggested that the AHO's commissioning and contracting approaches needed to be fine-tuned to better reflect the principle of Self-Determination and better support growth of the Aboriginal housing sector, including through further housing management transfers. And following on from the Affordable Housing Forum recently convened by the City of Sydney, he underlined the important role that local government can start to play to support development opportunities for Aboriginal Affordable Housing. What better way to use that extra day we had in 2024 than to do some strategic planning! The Birribee Housing board and exec all came together with the support of Will Roden to develop a strategic plan to guide the work of Birribee Housing through to 2028. - service excellence, - workforce satisfaction and development, - partnerships, and - continued business growth were the key takeaways from the day. As an entity that has already achieved so much in less than four years of operations, it is exciting to think what can be achieved over the next four as this strategic plan is brought to life. Thanks to the Aboriginal Housing Office for hosting us at their office, and to our special guests Famey Williams and Rebecca Pinkstone who shared their reflections on Aboriginal housing and how AHO and Homes NSW can partner with providers like Birribee Housing to improve outcomes for Aboriginal peoples.
