About us
NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) provides simple, reliable, and comparable sustainability measurement across building sectors like hotels, shopping centres, apartments, offices, data centres, and more. We use a simple six-star scale that helps the market to overcome information barriers to invest in energy efficiency, water efficiency, waste reduction and indoor environment improvements. The NABERS program is delivered by industry to commercial property owners and is administered by government. By creating high quality rating tools and working with partners to promote target setting, we aim to stimulate the market for environmental retrofits and drive competition between building owners and managers for better performance. We'll use this page to keep you up to date with the latest NABERS news, as well as to highlight other interesting posts that are relevant to our program.

🎉 Celebrating progress, reflecting on 2024 As we wrap up 2024, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the achievements that shaped this year and look ahead to what’s next. Here’s what’s been happening at NABERS: ✅ NABERS Energy & Water rating for Schools We launched this new rating tool, enabling schools across Australia to measure and improve their energy and water efficiency. Elwood Primary School in Victoria set the benchmark as the first public school to achieve a NABERS rating – an incredible 5 stars! ✅ Embodied Carbon Rating Tool This game-changing tool, unveiled at the Energy Performance Summit, is helping the built environment tackle embodied carbon emissions. It’s a big step in shaping Australia’s journey towards a sustainable future. ✅ Estimate Your Rating Tool Update We’ve expanded the tool to include all sectors covered by the NABERS Energy Performance Indicator, making it easier to get indicative ratings for a wide range of building types. This year also marks 25 years of NABERS – a quarter of a century working together to reshape the way we approach sustainability in the built environment. These milestones are possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of our partners, stakeholders, and the broader NABERS community. Thank you all! 🌟 As we prepare to close for the holidays from 20 December 2024 to 6 January 2025, we wish you a joyful, restful holiday season. Here’s to a bright and impactful 2025, and to continuing this vital work together! #NABERS #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency #greenschools #embodiedcarbon #environment

Last Wednesday's NABERS Hotels & Short-Term Accommodation Webinar highlighted the power of collaboration in driving sustainability across the hospitality sector. It was fantastic to see over sixty participants actively engage in discussions, all eager to make a difference. We covered the latest updates to NABERS ratings, shared valuable policy insights, and explored how hotels are achieving real-world benefits like reduced energy costs and enhanced guest appeal. "We started our NABERS Journey in 2019. It was very challenging for a portfolio like us that had a global presence, with so many certificates in the market at the time. After we explored the pros and cons of these certificates, we decided to go for NABERS because it is tailored to the Australian context. Aligns with Australian climate conditions and regulations, ensuring the metrics are highly relevant to the local market. NABERS is also focused on operational performance unlike other certifications that were focused on design or intention. There are also commercial benefits that we see when we get NABERS ratings. And NABERS is aligned to our NetZero goals." —Magid Bahaa, PMP® NER GSAP , Director of Technical Services in CapitaLand. We appreciate your engagement in being part of shaping sustainability in this integral sector, and hope it energises you and your organisations (sustainably!) as we move forward. Thank you. Celebrating NABERS’ 25-year journey of sustainability through innovation For 25 years, NABERS has been at the forefront of driving change in the built environment. From the transformative Commercial Building Disclosure program to expanding internationally and launching tools for embodied carbon, schools, and retail, we’ve innovated to meet the evolving challenges of a changing world. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of countless sustainability champions across government, industry, and business. Together, we’ve set benchmarks, inspired progress, and shown what’s possible when we work toward a shared vision. “This is a powerful story about what is possible when government jurisdictions work together with industry in partnership, to deliver change neither could deliver in isolation.” said Carlos Flores, Director at NABERS. As we reflect on these milestones, we look ahead with the same commitment to innovation and collaboration, working toward Australia’s Net Zero goals.
