Good news for a Friday! Left Bank Co is part of the Mott MacDonald and TYRRELLSTUDIO led team for the Harbour Trust who won the 2024 AILA National Landscape Architecture Award for Cultural Heritage for our work on the Cockatoo Island and Wareamah masterplan. We played a role in discussing the cultural and creative opportunities on the site and interpretation/experience options throughout the site. The Award of Excellence in the same category (Cultural Heritage) went to the Jabiru Lakeside masterplan, a pioneering model for high-quality, culturally specific development. Located within the dual World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, the groundbreaking plan was developed in partnership with Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation and the Mirarr people. One of Left Bank Co.'s signature program is the Making Space for Culture Incubation Program. It's designed to initiate a productive dialogue between the property sector and creative organisation by: ✅ establishing a shared language ✅ developing a sense of each other's drivers and priorities ✅ understanding the structural issues that has led to market failure in the provision of creative space ✅ creating partnerships and collaboration opportunities We've just wrapped up the third and final year of the program in this cycle that has attracted over 25 creative organisations and the most sophisticated and open-minded property owners and partners including public and private sector actors. This week, we wrapped up the final year of the Making Space for Culture Incubation Program with a Think Tank session where we unpacked in detail important themes that came out through the program this year: - Affordability: what does it mean? how do we define it? what would be useful tools and mechanisms to define and manage this? - Overcoming the bias in favour of presentation spaces: in the past years we've been doing the incubator, we've heard the creative sector need affordable production spaces and we've been delivering unaffordable presentation spaces. What's going on there? How can we make production space more appealing? - Creative hubs - friend or false friend? What's behind the requests for creative industry hubs? Are hubs organised around one sub-sector's needs better? Or are multi-disciplinary hubs the way to go? Stay tuned for the outcomes of these discussions and so much for in our upcoming Incubation Program Report, to be released in October. Yesterday, we hosted the third pitch session as part of the Making Space for Culture Incubation Program. It was great to see the creative sector develop bold and confident proposals for facilities that would support a whole ecosystem of players. The property sector continued to invite collaboration and partnership in early phases of projects as well as finding tactical opportunities to make space for culture.
