It’s the most wonderful (and wasteful) time of the year! 🎄🎁🎅 Food waste, unwanted gifts and excessive packaging contribute to unnecessary waste during the festive season. Ignoring the impact this has on our environment is guaranteed to get you on the naughty list 😏 Our research shows that Victorians are passionate recyclers. However, minimising or avoiding waste (especially at this time of year) also plays a key role in reducing our impact. Victoria is making good progress towards a circular economy with the container deposit scheme, improvements to household and commercial recycling systems, governments sourcing more goods made from recycled materials and waste being used to generate energy. By shifting to a more circular economy, we can create jobs, make better use of our recycling and resource recovery infrastructure and reduce our impact on the environment. Read our blog to find out more: https://lnkd.in/gqKUxQmf Our top tips for a sustainable holiday season that guarantees your spot on the nice list include: Reduce your waste - Plan your meals ahead of time to reduce food waste and opt for vouchers and experiences over gifts. Reuse as much as possible - Dust off Nanna’s fine china and leave the single use plates on the supermarket shelf. Recycle what’s left - grab your empty beverage containers and jingle all the way to a container deposit scheme collection point. Many things contribute to providing students with a high quality education. Skilled and experienced teachers, student and parent engagement, a strong curriculum and high quality infrastructure are all important factors. Education infrastructure takes time to plan, build and deliver. In our latest research report, 'Learning for life: preparing kindergarten, school and TAFE infrastructure for the future', we look at different ways the Victorian Government can invest to improve access to education throughout peoples' lives. - Victoria will need about 900 new kindergartens by 2036, more than 100 of these will be needed in regional Victoria. - Melbourne’s growth suburbs in the west, north and south-east will have the biggest school enrolments over the next 12 years. These areas will need 95% of new government schools. - Some TAFEs in outer Melbourne and regional Victoria need more teaching floorspace to deliver training and help fill the state's skills gap in construction, energy and healthcare. Government can save billions and give more Victorians better access to learning opportunities throughout their lives by focusing its investment where there is the greatest need and where other providers are less likely to operate. We make 4 recommendations to guide the government on future demand for education infrastructure, and how it can best meet that demand. More and more people are considering a move to the regions. According to a recent study by Regional Australia Institute, two in five people surveyed are pondering a sea- or tree-change. 🌳🌊 At Infrastructure Victoria, we know that infrastructure solutions must meet local needs and support communities that are as diverse as our regional landscapes. From schools and hospitals to road maintenance and climate-resilient infrastructure, you can read more about our recommendations for regional Victoria here: https://lnkd.in/gSwQvTHQ
📣 New research shows the number of city-dwellers looking to relocate regionally has doubled over the past 18 months. The results of a nation-wide survey have revealed that 40% of capital city resident are considering a regional move, up from 20% in May 2023. It comes at the same time as the release of the Year 2 Progress Report on the Regionalisation Ambition, which shows key regional metrics have gone backwards in the past 12 months, including: ❌ The regional rental vacancy rate decreasing (1.3% in 2024 v 1.5% in 2023). ❌ Regional building approvals declining (down 9.4% between May 2023 and May 2024). ❌ The regional student school attainment rate dropping (67.3% in 2022 v 71.4% in 2021). ❌ The percentage of migrants settling in the regions falling (16.5% in 2022/23 v 18.6% in 2021/22). “Demand for regional living has never been higher, but as a nation we are not keeping pace with delivering the fundamental building blocks that are needed as we rebalance the nation.” – RAI CEO, Liz Ritchie The Regionalisation Ambition is the nation’s first holistic, 10-year framework for regional Australia. It contains 20 targets for improvement, which the RAI reports on annually. Interested in how regional Australia’s fared across all targets over the past 12 months? As the sun sets on United Nations Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan, governments across the world are continuing the ongoing work to reduce #greenhousegas #emissions across the economy and prepare communities and #infrastructure for the impacts of more frequent and extreme weather events. Infrastructure Victoria's research 'Weathering the Storm: adapting Victoria's infrastructure to climate change' provides a toolkit to help governments identify the vulnerabilities, risks, and practical ways to make our infrastructure more resilient. It shows how targeted, cost-effective adaptation solutions can keep communities safer, keep businesses open and reduce the cost of recovery. A summary of our report featured in the latest issue of the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) ‘Climate resilient infrastructure report: a focus on technology’. It was launched earlier this month as part of the COP29 Azerbaijan climate talks. A recording of our most recent expert panel discussion, 'Sharing is caring: how sharing more school grounds can unlock benefits for the community', is now available on our website - https://lnkd.in/gAQGnEe In this webinar, we discussed the findings and recommendations from our latest research report, 'Getting more from school grounds: sharing places for play and exercise'. Ovals and playgrounds on state government school land can give more people access to open space to exercise, play and get together with others. Our recommendations to the Victorian Government focus on supporting schools to help share outdoor areas with local communities. Christmas shopping got easier this week for residents in Melbourne’s south-east with the Victorian Government announcing a new Sunday service for Route 800 bus. The bus takes passengers from Dandenong station along the Princes Highway to Chadstone Shopping Centre. Buses on the route will also run later on weekdays and weekends, giving all passengers more travel options from Sunday, November 24. Direct bus routes like the 800 help provide fast connections between people, jobs and activity centres. This makes buses a more attractive travel choice, especially in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Our report 'Fast frequent fair: how buses can better connect Melbourne' finds full reform of the bus network will give more people access to good public transport, reduce traffic congestion and cut Victoria’s transport emissions. Victorians told us more frequent services, more direct routes and better connectivity with activity centres, such as shopping centres and train stations, will make buses a more attractive choice for moving around Melbourne. Christmas shopping without having to find a car space? That sounds like a choice Melburnians are on board with 💡🚌🎄 You can read our report here: https://lnkd.in/gfVen35g #transport #buses #publictransport #melbourne #route800 Public Transport Users Association Daniel Bowen Department of Transport and Planning Gabrielle Williams MP
