Workplace bullying is something we don’t speak about enough.
That’s why our Managing Director Sarah Queenan was pleased to recently speak with Jo Knox from HR Daily about opportunities we have to strengthen the HR frameworks many organisations have in place to prevent and manage workplace bullying.
The world has changed, which means the way people bully has also changed - with policies simply not keeping up.
"Technology is having a really substantive impact on the way people bully, because essentially bullying can now take place in a 24/7 environment," Queenan says. School bullies often target a victim out of hours, she notes, and it's "very easy" for workplace bullies to do the same.
Certain cultural norms also exacerbate the problem, including attitudes that "very much" permeate into the workplace, such as "she'll be right, mate", "toughen up, harden up" and "shape up or shape out" – "so I think the Australian culture has a lot to answer for", she says.
