Gawura is a K-6 school for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Sydney's CBD.

About us

Gawura is a co-educational Indigenous Kindergarten to Year 6 school for children who live close to the Sydney CBD. Established in 2007 to address the well-recognised disparity in educational outcomes for Indigenous students, Gawura is St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s contribution to the national reconciliation agenda. Gawura currently has 40 students in deliberately small class groups where students are taught numeracy and literacy intensively for 50% of the day. Students have a ‘buddy class’ in the St Andrew’s Cathedral School for other lessons. This helps students make friends and prepares them, even in the younger years, for the transition to secondary school. All students are offered a place in the mainstream St Andrew’s Cathedral School for their secondary education, on full tuition scholarship. We currently have 11 students in secondary school. Gawura employs four Indigenous staff members, including an Indigenous Community Liaison Officer who works with families and helps with any financial or family issues that may arise. Gawura helps our students' overcome barriers and their socio-economic disadvantage to build a support network that will shape their identity and ensure they have the same opportunities as any other young Australian. Our outstanding Gawura graduates 14 students have completed Year 12 since Gawura began in 2007. One Gawura graduate has completed a PhD at ACU in in Aboriginal Education and Positive Psychology. Georgia has completed a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) at the University of Sydney. Her twin sister Rachel studied a Bachelor of Law/Arts at the University of Sydney, and hopes to work in Community at some point in her career. They are Weilwan Women from the Gomeroi Nation. We also have an Oxford University graduate, completing a Master of Science. Kas is a proud Mbarbarum, Kuku Yalanji, Yidinji and Gugu Yimidthirr descent.

It truly is inspiring to see the positive changes our people are making in their communities and it is something we are proud to support via our #NovaGoldenGrants initiative. This year we are able to support an initiative close to Mary DATOC's heart, and in her own words she shares why Gawura School inspires her. "As a supporter of Gawura School at St Andrew's Cathedral School, I saw firsthand the impact it had on students. Our son, who studied alongside Gawura students, benefited deeply from exposure to First Nations culture – an experience that broadened his perspective and deepened his understanding of Australia's heritage. Gawura College fosters respect, empathy, and appreciation for Indigenous traditions, bridging gaps and building connections that will shape our children's futures. We were so grateful to be part of such an initiative that brings us closer to true reconciliation". • Does your organisation have a Reconciliation Action Plan? Make sure this is a living, breathing, purposeful document and put your corporate weight (and funds!) behind an impactful organisation who is making a tangible difference in our world. Gawura IS changing lives of our students, their families and our community. However, we require much needed funds as our student cohort grows, to ensure that our culturally authentic, educational plans and supports are realised. Don't just file that RAP and forget about your organisations good intentions. Reach out now - and stand beside us to support our leaders of tomorrow. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • Gawura is primarily about community. This is clearly evident in the Strategic Plan and Reconciliation Action Plan process that we are currently going through. Ms Jackie Isenegger, Director of Strategy and Marketing is leading this journey and gathering all stakeholders along the way to gain insights and feedback to ensure that the plans resonate with our key community members, especially our students and their families. Part of this process is to translate the plans and represent it in a visually appropriate way. Led by Gawura parents Charmaine and Jason Mumbulla from @mumbullacreative our community gathered to yarn about how best to do this. When we say that we are fueled and energized by our community, we could not mean it more than throughout this process. Thank you to all who have given their time, energy and knowledge so that Gawura can grow and be even stronger. Stay tuned for the next steps of our strategic plan.

  • Last week, Year 5 and 6 Gawura students performed for the Commonwealth Bank's Group Audit and Assurance national conference. This involved dancing for over 400 delegates, opening the 4 day gathering, along with Pastor Ray Minniecon giving the Acknowledgement of Country. This was the first time our Gawura dancers shared these incredible dances, led by Aunty Rayma Johnson with an audience beyond Gawura and St Andrew's Cathedral School. It is such a special way to highlight the incorporation of culture into our everyday learning and displaying the partnership of CBA with their community. Well done 👏🏽

  • Have you heard the wonderful news about Gawura's co-founder Phillip Heath, AM. Well deserved. The ripple effect of your heartfelt efforts are broad and deep and everlasting. Congratulations.

Congratulations to Phillip Heath, AM for making the Daily Telegraph’s “Power 100”. A true leader in education, Phillip continues to set a remarkable example of how Independent schools can drive positive change. From his early days in Illawarra to his current role as Headmaster of Barker College, Phillip’s leadership has focused on ensuring education benefits everyone. Under his guidance, three Indigenous schools have been established – Gawura School, Darkinjung Barker, and Dhupuma Barker - and most recently, a special assistance school for refugee children was opened at Barker, furthering his vision of inclusivity and belonging for all students. His philosophy resonates deeply: “Is the world better because you’re here? Or are you just serving those who have the means?” AISNSW thanks you for your dedication to fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all and for your continued influence in shaping the future of education. Well deserved!   https://lnkd.in/gbTCJAzG

We are overjoyed to let our community know that St Andrew’s Cathedral School has partnered with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) in an exciting First Nations Scholarship Programme. The scholarship will empower up to 10 of our female Gawura School graduates to continue their education at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, beyond Year 6. The Year 7 students will not only have their education costs supported for the next six years, they will also have access to valuable mentoring opportunities at CBA. This is another vote of confidence for the Gawura programme where an additional supporter from the community has stepped forward to assist Gawura graduates as they strive towards a positive future. • This year's Reconciliation Week theme is "Now More Than Ever" and serves as a reminder that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must persist. On Monday, we welcomed back educator Lavinia Gibbs who led a workshop with our Gawura and Junior School students focusing on Yalagiyu. Yalagiyu is a word from the Yuwaalaraay/ Gamilaraay languages meaning ‘now’. Kindergarten and Stage 1 delved into the importance of inclusion and belonging through a Dreaming Story about how Koala came to be. Stage 2 and 3 explored key points in Australia’s history, such as the 1967 Referendum and The High Court Mabo decision and how each of these significant historical milestones play an important role in the reconciliation journey. The students also learnt about the meaning of racism and some practical, gentle steps they can take in addressing it. By reflecting on this year's reconciliation theme, the students made personal commitments to contribute to the healing of our nation through reconciliation. “It is important that everyone feels included so that they have a safe and happy place to belong”. - Kindergarten student “I wish to learn more about our history so that I can help Australia to be a kinder place” - Stage 2 Student It was wonderful to welcome back Aunty Vin. We can't wait to see you again. Now More than Ever - what are you doing to call out racism within our society and to seek equality and equity within Australia?
