In a classroom a boy sits quietly, staring at his workbook in frustration as the teacher calls his name again. Frustration flickers across her face—he must not be paying attention, she assumes. “He just doesn’t listen,” she says later. But the truth is, he can’t hear. Hearing loss is invisible and its impact is often misunderstood. In classrooms, where focus and participation are critical, children with undiagnosed or unsupported hearing challenges can be mislabelled as inattentive or disinterested. Too often, they’re seen as “problem children.” This label can have a cascading effect: damaged self-esteem, disengagement from school, and, in some cases, high-risk behaviours. For some, the inability to communicate or listen effectively may lead to early interactions with the juvenile justice system. It doesn’t have to be this way. Early intervention can change these children’s paths entirely. Earbus Foundation works with educators to recognise the signs of hearing loss and transform the lives of children previously seen as unreachable. You can help raise awareness of the quiet struggles of hearing loss, so every child gets the opportunity to succeed at school. Because every child deserves to be part of the conversation. In a bustling playground, a girl sits apart, watching the other children play. As their laughter and shouts fill the air, her world remains quiet. She longs to join in but without sounds to guide her, the connection feels out of reach. For children with hearing loss, this quiet isolation is more than a moment. It’s a persistent challenge that shapes their experience of the world. Hearing loss can create barriers that extend far beyond sound - children may struggle to communicate, form friendships, and feel included. Over time this isolation can affect their mental health, leading to feelings of loneliness and anxiety. It can hinder social development, making it harder to navigate relationships and build resilience. But this doesn’t have to be their reality. With the support of organisations like Earbus Foundation, children can thrive and flourish, building confidence and connections. Let’s work together to ensure no child feels left out of the laughter. Because every child deserves to be part of the conversation. At Earbus Foundation, our team do more than provide health services. They become advocates, educators and trusted partners for Aboriginal communities in remote Western Australia. Hear from one of our passionate nurses, Richard Jenkins, about the profound impact of this work and why he describes it as a calling: "Every day, I have the privilege of making a meaningful difference in the lives of Aboriginal children, hopefully ensuring they can grow and thrive in their communities. Hearing is essential for children to learn, connect, and experience the world around them. My role is to help address the many challenges Aboriginal children face with regard to Otitis media and various other ear health issues, combining clinical expertise with a deep respect for culture and community. One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is building trust with families and understanding their unique needs. Many of the communities I visit are remote, vibrant, and steeped in traditions. I am constantly humbled by the strength, resilience, and wisdom of the families I serve. Working alongside them, I can provide care that respects their culture while delivering evidence-based interventions to improve health outcomes. Education is also a big part of my role. Teaching families about ear health empowers them to take charge of their children’s well-being. Watching a child hear clearly for the first time and seeing their confidence blossom is the most fulfilling reward. This work goes beyond nursing - it’s about partnership, advocacy, and breaking down barriers to health care. Supporting Aboriginal children to thrive inspires me every day and reinforces my belief in the power of community-led health care. Being an Earbus Nurse is more than a job - it’s a calling. It's not just what I do; it’s who I am. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world." Did you know ... The first step in identifying middle ear disease relies on a small torch or scope called an otoscope. This tool shines a beam of light to help visualise and examine the condition of the ear canal and eardrum and has been used to peer into patient ears since the 14th century. The kinds used by physicians in the 1920s were often made of silver and accompanied by various pieces in velvet-lined boxes. The design hasn't changed much over that time though the technology certainly has. Examining the ear can reveal the cause of symptoms such as earaches, ears feeling full, or hearing loss. #earbus #heartoday #shinetomorrow #earscreening #otoscopy #mobileclinic #earhealth

Did you know that 1-3 babies per 1,000 are born with a permanent hearing loss? 🦻 Earbus delivers the Newborn Hearing Screening Program in private maternity hospitals in WA. The Program aims to screen all babies to identify hearing loss at birth. Hearing screenings are conducted a couple of days of birth. Early detection and treatment gives children and families the best opportunity to ensure appropriate speech and language development. Our Earbus Screeners let parents know the results straight away and provide information on hearing milestones so that baby’s development can be monitored: BIRTH <-> THREE MONTHS: • Startles or jumps when there is a sudden noise nearby • Tends to wake up, stir or cry when there is noise • Quietens when they hear your voice THREE <-> SIX MONTHS: • Eyes turn towards interesting sounds • Appears to listen to voices and other sounds • Awakes easily to sound SIX <-> TWELVE MONTHS: • Turns head to soft sounds • Understands “no” and “bye-bye” • Begins to copy speech sounds If you have concerns about your baby's hearing or if they aren't reaching their hearing milestones, you can book a hearing test at our Hear Today Clinic - www.heartoday.org.au #earbus #heartoday #shinetomorrow #newbornhearing #NBHS #SJOG Image credit: Christine Calessi via SJOG Subiaco

Earlier this year, National Rural Health Alliance Chief Executive Susanne ( Susi ) Tegen shared some sobering statistics about rural Australians and health. "We all know that Australia’s rural, regional and remote communities experience poorer health outcomes compared to their urban counterparts,” she said. "On average, a person living in rural Australia receives $848 less in healthcare funding each year, which equates to a $6.55 billion underspend across the country. This is despite rural industries generating about 80 per cent of Australia’s exports and providing about 90 per cent of the fresh food in our markets." While rural communities are amazingly resilient and innovative in their solutions to overcome healthcare challenges, rural people experience a triple health disadvantage: ❤️ poorer circumstances in terms of social determinants of health 👨⚕️ a lack of service availability and 💰 higher costs of access and delivery all resulting in poor health outcomes. This National Rural Health Month, Earbus Foundation honours the amazing regional agencies we work with across our great state who help bring about positive changes in health for rural West Australians. From longstanding partners such as Wirraka Maya Health Services Aboriginal Corporation - WMHSAC and Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA) through to newer collaborations such as Ngunytju Tjiti Pirni Aboriginal Corporation (NTP) and BHP Pilbara Education Partnership, we are proud to walk beside you to improve health outcomes for children and communities across WA. #earbus #heartoday #shinetomorrow #NationalRuralHealthMonth #NRHM24 #partnerships #ruralhealth #regionalhealth #remotehealth #closethegap #collaboration Collection of images from the Earbus Foundation Archives: 2014 - 2024
