The justice system has a responsibility to ensure that all people receive fair treatment under the law. But some people using violence can manipulate these legal systems and structures to continue abusing and harassing victim-survivors. Children can be entangled in this systems abuse. Children are victim-survivors of violence in their own right and deserve a justice system that understands and protects them. Let’s ensure that our justice system is trauma-informed, child-focused, and is actively working to address and prevent systems abuse. #16days #16DaysofActivism #noexcuse Delia Donovan

People should feel safe and supported no matter where they live. One-third of domestic and family violence-related homicides occur outside major cities. Much more needs to be done to ensure that victim-survivors living in rural and regional areas can get help when they need it. Access to quality domestic and family violence specialist support should not depend on where you live. Let’s increase funding for specialist domestic and family violence services in rural and regional areas so they can respond to people in crisis and intervene early to prevent violence.

Domestic and family violence is the main reason women and children leave their homes and seek support from homelessness services in NSW. Yet services are unable to keep up with increasing demand. In 2022 – 2023, there were nearly 295 unassisted requests per day in NSW specialist homelessness services. A large majority of the people turned away were women. Without sufficient funding for homelessness and domestic and family violence services, people leaving violence are unable to get the help they need. Domestic and family violence workers are also at a greater risk of burnout, vicarious trauma, and are more likely to resign. A funding boost for homelessness and specialist domestic and family violence services is critical, so that victim-survivors are not turned away. #noexcuse #16Days #16DaysofActivism Delia Donovan

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make up approximately 3.2% of the Australian population, yet they face systemic racism and intergenerational discrimination. This situation has led to a significantly higher need for homelessness services in NSW. During the 2022-2023 period, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people represented 29% of all clients receiving assistance from Specialist Homelessness Services in NSW. This must change. Children and young people are not just bystanders in a violent home, they are victim-survivors in their own right. Their experiences of violence can have lifelong consequences.    The Child Maltreatment Study found that approximately 40% of Australians had been exposed to domestic and family violence as a child, with long term mental health impacts. This is why we want to see accessible and well-funded child-focused domestic and family violence services that are sufficiently funded so that children and young people get the help they need. It’s time for this country’s politicians to SEE, HEAR and LISTEN to US.
