Updates

  • The City of Tea Tree Gully is excited to announce the acquisition of Sfera’s Park Suites and Convention Centre, a well-established local business, along with the adjoining property at 171 Reservoir Road. The rare opportunity to take ownership of both properties will allow Council and the community to control the future and potential of these sites, which have been so important to the community through accommodation, functions and wedding services. Mayor Marijka Ryan expressed gratitude to the Sfera’s family, who have run the business for close to 40 years and added "the acquisition will see the services continue as normal in the medium term and the venues will be managed as standalone commercial entities. The expectation is that there will be no negative impacts on rates paid by the community and we will be able to provide valuable services to the community including accommodation for patients and visitors to Modbury Hospital.” For more details https://bit.ly/4iSToQP

  • Yesterday evening, we officially launched the Sister City Friendship Garden at Solandra Reserve, Modbury, as a symbolic representation of the ongoing relationship between the City of Tea Tree Gully and Asakuchi City, Japan. Alongside the beautification works, the Friendship Garden features a public art installation that pays homage to the original Japanese Friendship artwork installed in 2007, which was created by Modbury High School students. Fast forward to 2024, and Public Art Project Coordinator Carly Didcote collaborated with Modbury High School students once again to reinvigorate the space. Over 20 clay tiles have been created by local students, inspired by drawings from Asakuchi primary and high school students, showcasing Japanese floral and fauna designs. These clay tiles have been thoughtfully arranged into five totem poles, surrounding a central granite rock sculpture. The carving on the granite features intertwined cherry blossoms and the tea tree flower, symbolising the bond between the two cities as they grow and flourish together. Designed as an Australian interpretation of a Japanese garden, the minimalist landscaping sees a combination of Australian native and exotic drought tolerant species, including leptospermum (tea tree) and westringia (native rosemary) shrubs, existing native gum trees and exotic prunus species (flowering plum). Thank you to everyone who has participated in bringing our Sister City Friendship Garden to life: Green Adelaide for part-funding the project, Modbury High School, Clay's Cool, Rockstar Creations and Adelaide Innovative Landscaping. • Transforming roundabouts: For a greener, more beautiful City of Tea Tree Gully 🌱 Roundabouts are essential for traffic flow, but they don’t always add to the beauty of our surroundings. That’s why our dedicated Horticulture City North team has been hard at work enhancing key roundabouts in the northern part of the City. Their recent efforts included installing irrigation systems, selecting appropriate plant species, planting with care, and applying fresh mulch. The results speak for themselves—these roundabouts now make driving through the City a more enjoyable experience. 🚗✨ We’re proud of the team's hard work and commitment to improving our community's landscape. Thank you for helping make the City of Tea Tree Gully a greener, more attractive place! 🌼

  • 🥳 Celebrating innovation and excellence in libraries 📚 Benjamin Wheal, Team Leader Collections and Access, was recently recognised for his innovation at the South Australian Library & Information Awards.   Benjamin was nominated for the excellence award as the driving force behind conceiving and implementing Project Wonderland at the City of Tea Tree Gully Library.   The project revolutionised the library customer experience by improving collection accessibility.   Benjamin’s vision was to “Create a space where people could feel a sense of wonder, here customers could immerse themselves, to browse and wander and discover…”.   Approximately 1.5 kilometres of old library shelving was replaced and 25,000 adult non-fiction titles were genrefied – collected by story genre instead of the century-old Dewey decimal system – to make the customer experience more like a bookshop.   Project Wonderland is regularly highlighted as best practice with regards to collection presentation through genrefication across the state of South Australia. • What's your 'strawberry'? 🍓 A fantastic message and initiative from our Waste Education team! They've joined forces with End Food Waste Australia and Banksia Park International High School to reinvigorate our 'Shape Your City' education program, which will see more than 180 Year 7 students work in groups to develop practical solutions to solve the issue of food waste in our City. The eight week program kicked off in late October with an intensive workshop - led by Waste Education Officer, Sam Tubb - where the students learned all about research, the design thinking process, the issue of food waste and the concept of behaviour change. By the end of November, the top groups will pitch their ideas to Council staff and End Food Waste Australia!

Passionate about Sustainability and Food Waste

A single strawberry changed my life – for the better. I left my teaching job, moved states, and started working in a completely different field. It was a huge, scary, life-changing decision – all because of a small, red strawberry... 🍓 But taking that leap into the unknown led me to work on meaningful and impactful programs that could make a difference to thousands of students. It all started on farms around Australia, where I saw firsthand how much perfectly good food goes to waste just because it didn’t meet cosmetic standards. It felt like an uncontrollable, unstoppable problem. So, I made the choice to move away from teaching and pursue a career in food waste. Driven by a desire to make a tangible difference, I joined the City of Tea Tree Gully as Waste Education Officer and dove into the world of waste management. Soon, I realised that small, everyday choices – like what goes in our bins – can make a bigger impact than we think. For example: If every household in our council area kept food and organic waste out of the red bin, we’d reduce nearly 9,000 tonnes of waste each year – that’s close to the weight of the Eiffel Tower! 🗼 Through my work on the Shape Your City program, I’ve been thrilled to combine my teaching experience with my passion for reducing food waste. This year, in partnership with End Food Waste Australia and Banksia Park International High School, we’re working with over 180 Year 7 students to tackle food waste in our community. They’re diving into the issues, using design-thinking, and coming up with their own solutions to make a real impact. By the end of November, the top groups will pitch their ideas to Council staff and guest speaker Jonathan Middis from End Food Waste Australia This program wouldn’t be possible without the staff at Banksia International High School, especially the teachers who saw the importance of this initiative and embraced it. Waste often feels like it’s beyond our control – but as individuals, we can make a real difference. It starts when we focus on what we can control and find a reason to care – our own personal ‘why.’ For some, it might be a desire to save money or protect the planet 🌎. For me, it started with a single, red strawberry – a strawberry that was perfectly edible but just a bit too small, tossed away because it didn’t ‘look right.’ 🍓 I’m excited to see the students in Shape Your City discover their own ‘strawberry’ – their reason to care and take action – and prove that small, meaningful steps can spark real change. And that’s why changing my life – moving, switching careers, and joining the City of Tea Tree Gully as Waste Education Officer – all because of a strawberry, has been for the better, not only for me, but hopefully for our planet too. #CTTG #FoodWaste #EndFoodWaste #TheGreatUnWaste #WasteDiversion #Lifttherightlid #feedfoodwastetoyourgreenbin
