Earlier in the month, the City partook in the Australian Indigenous Tourism Conference (AITC24) in Melbourne (Naarm). Attending the three-day event aligned closely with the City's 2023–2028 Tourism Strategy, which identifies Aboriginal and cultural tourism as a key pillar for growth and community engagement. This valuable opportunity will support ongoing work in Aboriginal tourism development and to contribute knowledge to the City's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group. The conference featured inspiring presentations from Indigenous leaders across Australia and beyond, showcasing innovative approaches to building connections, fostering community, and driving cultural tourism initiatives. In addition to gaining valuable insights, the event offered a platform for networking and strengthening relationships within the industry, further enhancing the City's efforts to celebrate and support its cultural community. Here are a few snapshots from the conference—another reminder of the meaningful work being done in this important space.

Our Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) had the privilege of hosting two insightful guest presentations: 🔥 Carole Green from the Western Australian Council of Social Service (WACOSS) shared key findings from their Heat Vulnerability Project, highlighting the impact of extreme heat on vulnerable communities and strategies to mitigate these risks. 🔥 The Bureau of Meteorology engagement team joined forces with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Metro South East District Officer to deliver a seasonal outlook tailored for the City of Armadale. They also reflected on past weather events, helping us prepare for the future. Our very own Mayor Ruth Butterfield, as Chair of the LEMC, leads this crucial committee with unwavering dedication to community safety and resilience. Collaborations like these are at the heart of creating a safer, more prepared City.

🌟 Empowering Education in Armadale 🌟 We are delighted to announce the establishment of a Suburban University Study Hub (SUSH) in the Armadale city centre, thanks to Federal Government funding from the Department of Education. Set to open in mid-2025, the SUSH will provide a dedicated space for study, resources, and mentorship, helping to create additional pathways for academic success. Mayor Ruth Butterfield shared: “The creation of an Armadale Suburban University Study Hub is a significant and vital step forward for local students. Accessible educational resources close to home will reduce the burden and costs of long commutes to university campuses and will foster a culture of learning and innovation in our community. "The Armadale SUSH will be a thriving environment for growth and collaboration between students and universities across Australia, ensuring the City of Armadale is leading the way for educational opportunities in the region. Thank you to the Department of Education for making this possible." With its focus on student support and connecting education with real-world opportunities, the SUSH will be a game-changer for our community. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our survey back in June - your input has been invaluable in showcasing the support our City has for this project.
