BridgIT Water Foundation

In Malawi, wildlife and natural resources are rapidly depleting, resulting in significant environmental degradation. To combat this, community awareness and support for affected communities are crucial. Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, the largest wildlife reserve in Malawi spanning 180,000 hectares, plays a vital role in supporting the country's wildlife, including elephants. The SMEC Foundation, along with support from SMEC's Kate Drews, will support BridgIT Water Foundation on a project that aims to enhance access to clean, safe drinking water and educate communities about elephant conservation within the reserve. By addressing knowledge gaps and capacity limitations, this initiative fosters community participation in wildlife conservation. The installation of water wells serves as a gesture of gratitude to these communities for their contributions to safeguarding wildlife. Upon completion, approximately 5,146 households and 30,876 underserved individuals in the target communities surrounding Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve will benefit from improved access to safe water. We've been working hard building wells at a refugee camp in Uganda in Kyaka, Kyegegwa District. Two villages, Bwiriza and Bukere A, have gained access to safe clean water with a total of 4163 people benefiting that live in those villages. The refugee camp hosts refugees from Congo. Access to safe, clean water is a game changer.

While western kids are playing video games, kids in rural Uganda are working hard to collect water for their families. Godfrey, 11, is one of them: “I am the eldest child of my family with 4 younger siblings. I am tasked with the responsibility of taking home at least 7 jerry cans (the yellow plastic containers, each 20 liters, or 20 kg). This work is very tedious and sometimes I feel like running away from home.” Who can blame him? An 11 year old kid having to haul so much weight on a daily basis? Besides the torture of carrying these loads, it is likely that he’ll have long-term physical consequences. BridgIT installs safe, clean water wells in the village so people like Godfrey don’t have to endure similar burdens. But as an all-volunteer not-for-profit enterprise, BridgIT relies on contributions to pay for the wells. Can you help?
