  • ATSE CEO Kylie Walker attended the inaugural National Symposium on Australian Traditional Medicine today alongside the winners of our first Traditional Knowledge Innovation Award last year, John Watson and Ron Quinn AM FTSE. We're looking forward to continuing our support in this area of national innovation and collaboration, so we can create a new industry of therapeutics built from native flora, Traditional Knowledge and genuine engagement across the country.

CEO at Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering

The inaugural National Symposium on Australian Traditional Medicine (co-conceived by Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering 2023 Traditional Knowledge Innovation Award winners, Kimberley elder John Dadigar Watson and Fellow Ron Quinn AM FTSE), has been a massive learning experience. ➡️ we’ve not even scratched the surface of potential powerful therapeutics from Australian Traditional Medicine ➡️ but before researchers dive in with enthusiasm, they first need to listen and learn from Traditional Owners ➡️ and sort out how equal, genuine, empowering and respectful collaborations with Traditional Owners are structured as a first priority ➡️ active compounds from the same plant species are different depending on where it grows, making local knowledge and tradition important in identifying potential, and in ongoing ownership of the base materials ➡️ a national pharmacopaeia of Australian Traditional Medicine plants could help fast-track trials, trademarks and approvals ➡️ this kind of R&D takes time - sometimes decades - but it can and will pay massive dividends to all collaborators, including (importantly) the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who are the guardians of this ancient knowledge ➡️ to achieve the full potential for this exciting R&D, research institutes and funders must support and encourage researchers to do this well, and reward respectful and genuine partnership. The next decade is likely to see a boom in Australian therapeutics derived from Australian native flora. We have the opportunity to build a collaborative powerhouse that builds respect, capability, opportunity and agency for Traditional Owners. #bushmedicine #Researchanddevelopment #STEMpower #STEMoriginals #traditionalknowledge #futuremadeinaustralia

  • Looking forward to this talk from our colleagues at Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) on trust in politics and politicians. These are important considerations if we want to make change through evidence-based policies.

Trust in politics has always been important, but it has taken on added significance in recent years as major events have been characterised by low trust and increasing cynicism and scepticism about politics and politicians. Yet despite so much talk about the crisis of trust in democracy, there has been no sustained research that directly engages with the perspectives and experiences of politicians. In this talk, James Weinberg PhD will tackle this important gap by asking not only whether the public trusts in politicians, but also whether politicians accurately perceive the trust placed in them, and how much our current age of distrust impacts politicians on a personal level. Ariadne Vromen will then dig deeper into what this could mean for Australian politicians in the face of an upcoming election. Join us in person or online for this interesting and free seminar at Parliament House Theatre. 🗓️ Wednesday 13 November 2024, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (AEDT) 📍 Parliament House Theatre, Parliament House and live streamed Register now - https://shorturl.at/uFako
