Deutsche Telekom contributes to the investments into Marvel Fusion’s technology. Their goal: commercialize fusion energy. The start-up is one of the most advanced fusion energy companies globally. Our own long-term climate goal is to be net-zero by 2040. To achieve this, new clean energy solutions are more than welcome! Our networks depend on clean energy. So does digitalization.   Therefore, we are on our  path: ✨ Since 2021, the electricity we use comes from renewable sources. ✨ For example: We already have more than 300 solar power plants in Germany. Together with PASM Power & Air Solutions, we store energy from renewable sources. ✨ And our data center in Biere, with 970 petabytes of storage capacity, scores high on energy efficiency.   Stephen Hawking called nuclear fusion an “inexhaustible supply of energy, without pollution or global warming”. Fusion is the energy of every star. It powers our sun! Marvel Fusion has the tools to harness that energy source. They have developed a laser fusion technology based on high-power, short-pulse lasers and nanostructured fuel targets. The company has validated the fundamental physics of the theoretical model in continuous experiments over five years. Telecoms companies are facing immense pressure to reinvent their business models as returns on invested capital have sharply declined over the past decade. According to PwC's Global Telecom Outlook report, the industry is entering a phase of muted revenue growth and optimization opportunities, making it harder to earn back the cost of capital. To address this, telecom companies are embracing new business models, such as anything-as-a-service (XaaS) providers and network orchestrators, to fundamentally change how they create value, serve customers, and offer new products or services.

Telcos are under pressure to increase investment while revenues plateau. Over the long term, this is financially unsustainable. Traditional telco efficiency programs that focus only on cost reduction through analyzing costs and budgets, redesigning processes, and adopting automation are no longer enough. Telcos need to rethink their business models and quickly adopt a new, bottom-up, data-driven framework to address the widening gap between stagnant revenues and increasing CAPEX/OPEX investments. Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. In an urgent appeal and a rallying cry to European policymakers earlier this year, Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm, demanded Innovation to be prioritized over (over)Regulation in Europe lest the region becomes “a footnote in next-generation technology success stories”. Mr. Ekholm also spoke in his seminar in Tallinn about the need to address the fragmentation in European telecoms market and to explore ways to create pan-regional scale typical of a single market – “For an operator, scale matters, and European operators are subcritical in scale. The average number of subscribers per operator in Europe is 4.4 million - compared to 95 million in the US, 300 million in India and 400 million in China. Europe simply needs in-market consolidation.” The essay ends with a romantic slogan “The EU is our common future”. #5G #APIs present a significant opportunity for #telcos to propel their next phase of 5G network monetization. According to Kearney's 5G API Developer Study 2023, there is a strong interest in the developer community to prioritize 5G API development and enhanced connectivity in their strategic roadmaps. Despite this interest, challenges remain for telcos, particularly regarding standalone 5G core deployment, network virtualization, and robust engagement with the developer community. A recent study conducted by my colleagues Jesper Larsson, Anna Kraft, Krishna Bhagavatula, Tyler Wedekamm outlines steps for telcos to prepare for 5G APIs effectively and assume a leadership role in shaping their 5G future. Interesting development for Mission Critical Networks as the connectivity for Europe's entire train network is to be upgraded to 5G (Gigabit train). The interesting thing is that partly the same solutions can also be used to create Gigabit connectivity for commercial aircrafts in the near future.

T-Mobile drives this as well. And builds amazing AI partnerships.   One of our common goals: increasingly autonomous networks that will run with minimum to none human intervention. For more security. Less errors and nightshifts. Faster deployment of innovations. And less resource consumption. One example: self-healing antennas. Which identify and fix problems in the network. Even before they occur and customers notice! T-Mobile recently announced a collaboration with Nvidia, Ericsson and Nokia. To take open RAN to the next automated level – important building blocks in our AI strategy. Another example of the impact of AI: Transforming customer experience. T Mobile builds a custom predictive AI platform within the T-Life app. With the help of Open AI. In Germany, we are bringing advanced AI to the Mein Magenta app in Germany. Together with Perplexity.
